Another off topic, but some friends and I ended up arguing it for far too long last night: Best candy bar? We narrowed it down to Nutrageous, Snickers and (original) Milky Way. But we couldn’t come up with a consensus. I think a Snickers, while good, is too dry to be the best.
Milky Way of those choices. without a doubt.

I’ve developed a theory on why Sowers hates Valbuena.
See, now that the trade deadline has come and gone, players can be sure they are here for the remainder of 2009. As such, the team likes to semi-jokingly have elections, similar to High School elections. Jeremy knew he couldn’t be President or Vice President. He isn’t good enough or popular enough for that. Only guys like Grady and Asdrubal have a shot at those titles. But Jeremy thought, “Hey, I could be the treasurer!” Jeremy ran for treasurer and was running unopposed. Then the new kid in school, Luis Valbuena, shows up. Valbuena is from New York. Flashy, he’s cool. He has stories about how his best friend’s uncle knows Derek Jeter. Valbuena jettisons to the most popular kid in school. He jumps into the Treasurer election and steals it from Sowers, even though Sowers has been around much longer, and feels he has earned it.
Wow, did I lose focus on my metaphor somewhere in there. The only reason I’m not just going to click Cancel is to show how quickly that fell apart.

Oh, I could. But my friend works at a theater. He can’t let us in for free, but once we’re in we’re allowed to just wander around for however long we want. So I didn’t directly go for that. But man. Whoever had the idea to package Gerard Butler as a romantic comedy star was doped up beyond belief.
I am really sad I moved back home to a small town because there is way less opportunity to skip into a second movie without a ticket at this theatre. I mean, on the other hand, $4 movies, so it woks out to about the same cost, but still.
And yeah, basically.
I also watched the first 15 minutes of The Time Travelers’ Wife and was (probably inappropriately) laughing a lot.
Just stupid. I’m not sure how someone can get invested in a romance where someone travels through time. Everything was so “HAMMER IN THE DRAMA”. Eric Bana’s father goes like “If go back in time and see your mother so often, why don’t you ever stop her from getting in that car?” And Bana slowly turns “I WOULD IF I COULD”.
I think it could totally be done awesomely in text, but I don’t think the plot works as well in a movie.
There is a part in the Trailer when she says, “If I could change anything about our life together, I wouldn’e change anything.” Lies. All of iit. She so would.

Buffy was good in seasons 2-5. (1 was, you know, what premiere seasons used to be, and 6 and 7 were sorta meh.) Angel had good bits and bad bits. Some of the seasons were really good, and some were really terrible. You should at least watch the episode about Lindsey’s EVIL HAND. (Really everything with Lindsey was really hilarious to me.) Dollhouse kind of skeeves me out, but some people really like it. I’d give it a shot if you like the other Whedon stuff.

What if he is? It would just be a warm body, filling a gap.
I still say, if he can hit decently, Jhonny is ghonny.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
the complete lack of interest (seemingly) in playing Marte at third right now makes me skeptical. It makes sense for Jhonny to be gone, but…
They know what Marte can do at 3B, it’s never really been in question. Playing Jhonny every day drives up his value.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Like I said…everything makes sense, but….i just have a hard time seeing it. We actually have an immediate shortfall at 1B and 3B. Peralta is costly, but not expensive. I’m more skeptical about it now than I was earlier.
He’s at least better than Hodges. But he’s limited in not being able to play 1B…he doesn’t really fix our problem. Jordan Brown and Jason Donald as our utility guys, with Crowe as the backup CFer….that I could picture. but still with Peralta as our starting 3B.
Garko?
"It's all part of life's rich pageant, you know?" - Inspector Clouseau
by woodsmeister on Aug 24, 2009 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions
Is it that common for a 1B/LF to be able to play 3B?
Gimenez and Valbuena can play 3B in a pinch.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
I don’t know; somebody will. I just don’t see backup-3B as something that you overly sweat in building your roster for a non-contending season.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
I guess I’m hesitant on Gimenez until I know what we are doing at catcher. We still have 4 guys for two spots (Shoppach, Marson, Gimenez, Toregas), so I assume moves are coming. Unless Brantley makes the roster, Crowe is here as our backup CF/4th OFer. Then it comes down to the 1B/LF/3B issue. Peralta is the most expensive option for any of those positions, but he might also be the best.
And I’m saying, don’t worry about it. The not-at-all-critical backup-3B controversy will get settled, one way or another.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
But if Peralta is jettisoned, it’s not just the backup role…it’s the insurance role. Wes Hodges sucks. So if Andy Marte craps out and Peralta is traded, who’s our 3B? Jason Donald?
The Chiz?
"It's all part of life's rich pageant, you know?" - Inspector Clouseau
by woodsmeister on Aug 24, 2009 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Agreed, but even if Hodges sucks, who cares if it’s Hodges, purely as the insurance guy in 2010?
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
If the cash involved is the $4.6M for Peralta versus the 0.6M for a rookie…I think I’d hope the Dolans front the money for Jhonny. Don’t mistake me, if we are offered good value for Peralta I’d take it in a second. But….I suspect that won’t happen this off-season, and I’d just assume keep Peralta (with the option of trading him mid-season next year).
I think we look for an equally sometimes-good 1B/LF to swap for.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
But how is that different than keeping Peralta?
Other than, Dellucci sucked every month we had him.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
I’m just saying, we find the 1B/LF equivalent of Peralta and make that deal. Makes more sense than keeping Jhonny just to play Marte at 1B.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
I think Jhonny also has some intangibles that need to be considered. Again – you give me value, I happily say goodbye to Peralta. But…my recollection from Sprint Training is that Jhonny, especially with Victor gone, is a leader of a significant fraction of the team. I also think Jhonny has the potential to be better than he has with Wedge as manager, because he obviously does not jibe with Wedge. So replacing Peralta’s role on the team isn’t, I think, as simple as replacing his production (which is pretty easy).
I suspect this is the offseason where we Free Jordan Brown.

Did you see this nugget from Castrovince?
Andy Marte had a nice homestand, as he’s 6-for-his last-14 with five RBIs in four games. Wedge didn’t sound overly impressed with this. “He still needs to hit pitches he should hit,” Wedge said of Marte. “If you get a hanging breaking ball, you have to make sure you hit it. If you get a good fastball, don’t foul it off. Good pitches get young hitters out, so you’ve got to keep working to not miss mistakes.”
Marte should never have run over Wedge’s dog.

I guess I might give a shit if we had even ONE young hitter who ever got better under Wedge without being sent down to work on things. At this point, I think Wedge knows less about hitting than a used Charlie Manuel hanky.

They pretty much arrived as finished products and succeeded immediately. They did not struggle for any length of time and then develop and improve under Wedge’s leadership.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Sizemore had a .798 OPS in AAA. I can’t find the exact MLE, but he had an almost identical slash line to what Barbaro Canizares has, which is a .674 MLE. That’s not a finished product. Martinez, I’ll give you.
As I often remind folks, not all data is statistical. Sizemore started his AAA career with some kind of flu or other illness and had terrible numbers for his first month or so. I think you would find that after that point, his numbers were in line with his major league numbers — and anyway, elite prospects generally are improving quickly at that stage of their physical development.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
So, when players got better, it was because they were good prospects. Players who got sent down sucked because Wedge is a terrible coach. Got it.
I’m just responding to the point
even ONE young hitter who ever got better under Wedge without being sent down to work on things
I get your point, but we’re going a bit overboard here. Is Wedge a good coach? Probably not. Should he have played Marte more? Sure, why not. But let’s not discount the possibility that the quote might apply to Marte, of the 57 OPS+.
Valbuena?
This isn’t to defend Wedge, but let’s not go overboard against him here either. But does anyone else get the impression that Marte is missing hanging breakingballs or fouling off fastballs?
I was going to say Valbuena. I was really surprised that he left him in there during his BABIP struggles.
Valbuena made some adjustments, but he was always hitting the ball hard.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Wood chartered a plane yesterday to take him and some teammates to the Pearl
Jam concert in Chicago last night (per AC, Wood is friends with Eddie Vedder).
Given his relatively light workload, he should be able to hold onto a 4-run lead, regardless.

I feel good for Masterson, watching this lineup. He’s got to be thinking, I can win with these guys — I don’t know if any of these other pitchers can, but I can. And that’s a start.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
I just remembered that the last time we got Soria (earlier this year) was during that “seagull game”. Good times.
For such a crappy season, we have had some memorable wins.
