Why is Popham in the NYPenn league?

by dgcambridge on Aug 27, 2009 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s a decent question. It’d be nice to see him join LC and help try to get them into the playoffs.

by APV on Aug 27, 2009 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I went looking, and found this:

“I fixed a lot of things in my mechanics during extended spring training,” Popham said. “I kept working on delivery, and I’ve been constant in zone and challenging the hitters. I’ve been giving up some hits but have been able to control it and get out of some jams.”

Earlier this season, Popham collected New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week honors after tossing seven innings of no-hit baseball while fanning a season-high nine batters.

“It was awesome to do that at this level, at any level,” he said of no-hit outing. “I think threw something like 82 pitches, and only 17 were balls. I really had it going that day.”

So maybe they felt he needed that specific instruction during extended ST.

Laffey has a better chance to survive as compared to your typical pitch-to-contact hurler because

1) he gets an absurd amount of groundballs, and
2) on a related note, he does not give up homeruns.

by xrickx on Aug 27, 2009 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

i’m not saying he won’t succeed… but wouldn’t you rather have a laffey who could miss a bat from time to time?

all I wanna do is zoom-zoom-zoom-zoom and a boom-boom

by gorilla_baller on Aug 27, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

yes, indeed. but i don’t anybody expects laffey to be an ace. he should fill the role that jake westbrook filled the last few seasons, and there’s value in that. it’s not ideal, but it works.

by xrickx on Aug 27, 2009 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

that’s fair enough… but even jake could get a K from time to time… just off the top of my head he was always good for about 4.5 or 5 k/9

in his four best years, he ranged from 4.6K to 5.5K per nine.

2003: age 25 season: 133 innings, 56BB/58K, 9 HR, insane 3.97 GF/FB (best of his career)

next year will be laffey’s age 25 season. laffey has had much more success than jake had at the same point in his career.

by xrickx on Aug 27, 2009 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

the 2003 season, by the way, was his breakout.

by gorilla_baller on Aug 27, 2009 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Harden and Heilman were claimed today, so teams are still putting guys on waivers. I’m not sure how the strategy works there.

by dgcambridge on Aug 27, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

the team can put the player on waivers at any point during the month. but it will only happen once. and the team does not have to put him on waivers, although almost every goes on (because you can just pull back the player)

by xrickx on Aug 27, 2009 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

With revocable waivers, the player clears after 48 hours. So the Cubs waited until this week to do so. I’m not sure why they would do so now instead of earlier.

by dgcambridge on Aug 27, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Perhaps they’re still planning for next year, and were debating arbitration offers, chance of compensation picks for free agents, and the like. When things became a bit more clear in that arena (and when they realized they weren’t going to the playoffs) they floated those guys to gauge interest.

by xrickx on Aug 27, 2009 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, your last point is surely the answer. They just were likely just waiting until they were out of the race. I haven’t been following the NL standings.

by dgcambridge on Aug 27, 2009 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

After a year and change of continuously putting it off or simply forgetting to do so, I finally decided to make a system recovery disc for this PC here at work. It’ll take 2 DVDs, says the system. No biggie, I brought in more than I’d need, just in case.

Recovery DVD 1 was a breeze. DVD 2 … well, the first try burned about halfway through and then ran into burn errors. Attempt #2 burned clear through to the end before a bad sector appeared during verification. Attempt #3 spun away for a half hour with no measurable progress whatsoever on the status bar before I finally tried to abort the operation … about ten minutes ago.

CTRL-ALT-DEL. End program. Yes, I understand the program is not responding, please stop it anyway. .

The drive has yet to stop spinning. About to reset the system to force the issue.

It’s been that kind of week.

by gorilla_baller on Aug 27, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Thank you. The Cheesy Gordita Crunch is far and away the best thing on the Taco Bell menu and has been since it first broke on the scene.

Other notables are the Crunch Wrap Supreme (albeit this has lost favor in my eyes since they took away the spicy chicken option), Volcano Burrito (a new favorite), the grilled chicken burrito with that avocado ranch sauce (another new favorite), and the classic chicken quesadilla.

by ahowie on Aug 27, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I bet you can still get it with spicy chicken. the one taco bell near me took the cheesy gordita crunch off the menu, but they’ll still make it if you ask.

by xrickx on Aug 27, 2009 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions

There are a ton of Taco Bells without the CGC on the menu and I still order it.

Which always presents a miniature dilemma for me before I open my mouth to order: Is it just called the Gordita Crunch, and I’m just recalling an adjective used in the commercial? Do I sound like an idiot ordering it? Is it similar to ordering a Tasty Big Mac?

But whatever, I don’t want to risk getting the order wrong.
