So funny story about my trip to Taco Bell: I decided I would see if I could hear WTAM in Clemson. You can… sometimes. The other times you hear this awesome station about Indians from India living in South Carolina. I stuck around long enough to hear the Indian announcer say, “this one’s for you, (Indian name I couldn’t decipher through the static.” And then awesome Indian techno started playing.

Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?

I don’t think profanity is innately funny, but neither do I think we should disqualify a guy for choosing to work in that area.

It’s ironic that we should have this discussion about Saget, whose entire career success is based on squeaky-clean “humor” that is so bad that it scarcely can even be called humor.

my memories of wickman include a lot of baserunners… entirely subjective of course… but i liked the big guy and his mangled digits

The eagle never lost so much time as when he submitted to learn from the crow

by gorilla_baller on Aug 27, 2009 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Selective memory. First half of 2005, he stranded a lot of guys. Outside of that, he was enormously successful as a closer and didn’t allow a huge number of baserunners.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Aug 27, 2009 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe the reason Wickman has such a reputation is because of the way he looked: an overweight bald guy sweating on the mound, a look of dyspepsia and agony. He looked like Haystacks Calhoun. If he had a handlebar mustache or a beetle-brow, people would think he was awesome. Wickman didn’t look the part.

by odradek on Aug 27, 2009 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. I think if he truly dominated, too, people would have seen him as dominant. But he was merely very successful rather than dominant, except for certain stretches (like the last 11 weeks of 2005).

by Jay on Aug 27, 2009 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions

No matter what the situation was, Wickman looked like he was struggling.
