Could be a product of where they’re pitching him, no? I’ve seen him put at least one or two good hits up the middle.

Could be. They’ve pretty much all been low and inside, right?

Kind of what I’m thinking. Sure, I’d like to see him take it the other way, but I still want him to punish it if they miss inside.

Man, hot damn. I cannot tell you how sure I was that at some point — maybe three years from now — Marte would get another shot on a crappy team and turn out to be a very good player. I just never imagined that crappy team would be us. Small consolation, but I’ll take it.

Didn’t you just recently say you weren’t as sure of Marte as everyone else around here was?

Marte is just one HR away from tieing his career best in HR. He hit 5 in the last nine weeks of the 2006 season.
We should pretend 2006-2008 did not happen and that we acquired a 25 year old that had a really nice season in AAA.
This is a version of what I was saying in 2007 and 2008.

We talked a lot about how Marte always starts slow; he takes a while to settle in. The theory was that this makes it even worse to play him sporadically, as essentially he never settles in. He’s hitting something like .100 in the first 41 PA of any callup. Truly terrible.
Well, once again, he had a 468 OPS in his first 41 PA in the majors this season, and from PA #42 on, I believe he’s over 1000 at the moment.

What is a vesting option? I can kind of get the gist from what Roger said but I don’t really know?
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
Generally, it’s a club option for an extra year on a contract, except that if a player reaches certain goals, the club option becomes another guaranteed year. Sometimes, vesting an option might even be detrimental to a player.
by Jay on Sep 1, 2009 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions
If I were a player, I’d make up the coolest vesting option ever. Like if I get 200 hits in a season, I get to wear a vest for the rest of the next season.

I’d rather have LaCruoy than Brantley I think.
by afh4 on Jul 6, 2008 7:51 PM EDT up actions 0 recs
I still can’t find the GD thread where we spent 200 comments on Green v. Brantley. I’ve apparently found every other Brewers trade thread.
Steel Nick
why is everyone so high on Brantley? He has a decent bat with good plate discipline and some speed, but he has no power and apparently he’s very shaky defensively. BA even calls him a 4th outfielder. We already have Brantley in our system in the form of Trevor Crowe. While he’s older, he also has more power and a better glove.
Atleast with Green or Lucroy you have players that can stay in the infield and have more tools than Brantley.
by JP_Frost on Aug 14, 2008 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I like everything about this. He’s pretty much proven he’s ready for AAA based on his SO/BB ratio alone. I like the fact that they are being a little more aggressive. Both he and Laporta should be in AAA (unless Laporta can win a job in spring training…..oh one can dream)
by hans on Oct 3, 2008 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If Brantley’s K% this year was a real indicator of his skill, and not a fluke, it is a better skill than anything Crisp ever displayed in the minors. For that matter, it is a better skill than anything Lofton displayed aside from Lofton’s speed. And not striking out is probably a better skill than being fast, especially given Brantley is not slow. There are a lot of nice things about Brantley, but that K% from this season is the single best number about him. The extent to which it reflects Brantley’s real ability will go a long way in determining what kind of ceiling he probably has.
by APV on Oct 6, 2008 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
All you guys are going to find out, he doesn’t need to trade anything for power other than his youth. He can stay the same kind of hitter and he’ll hit 25 home runs by age 25. Who wants to make a wager on nit?
by Jay on Oct 6, 2008 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Obviously there will be an increase in power with age. But I remain skeptical in the absence of evidence to the contrary that his baseline power (age-adjusted), which to this point has been very minimal, will show a dramatic increase. His has a track record of pounding the ball into the ground.

by fleerdon on Sep 1, 2009 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t either (for you). Because they play a certain way that you don’t like and they aren’t going to change as soon as they play on grass. I have a feeling their style of play won’t be as successful so they may change it then or just find another way to make it work. So I did not mean that anyone who hates them should stop hating them next year.
