Marte’s OPS back at 802

by supermarioelia on Sep 1, 2009 9:13 PM EDT reply actions

You remember the old 41 PA argument?

by Jay on Sep 1, 2009 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

We talked a lot about how Marte always starts slow; he takes a while to settle in. The theory was that this makes it even worse to play him sporadically, as essentially he never settles in. He’s hitting something like .100 in the first 41 PA of any callup. Truly terrible.

Well, once again, he had a 468 OPS in his first 41 PA in the majors this season, and from PA #42 on, I believe he’s over 1000 at the moment.

by Jay on Sep 1, 2009 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Did you know that Ordonez also has a 2011 option that can vest if he reaches 1080 PA’s in 2008 and 2009 combined?

by Roger Dorn on Sep 1, 2009 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh my god that is even MORE exciting.

by gte619n on Sep 1, 2009 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

by Roger Dorn on Sep 1, 2009 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

In summary…the Tigers are about to pay Magglio $18 million next year coming off a .738 OPS season

by ClemsonGirl on Sep 1, 2009 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Generally, it’s a club option for an extra year on a contract, except that if a player reaches certain goals, the club option becomes another guaranteed year. Sometimes, vesting an option might even be detrimental to a player.

by Jay on Sep 1, 2009 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

If I were a player, I’d make up the coolest vesting option ever. Like if I get 200 hits in a season, I get to wear a vest for the rest of the next season.

by supermarioelia on Sep 1, 2009 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m still not exactly pumped about Brantley. People continue to just ignore his numbers this year.

There’s a lot to like about him but there’s also a lot to like about a catcher with an .812 OPS in AA at age 23, built largely on walking more than he strikes out.

why is everyone so high on Brantley? He has a decent bat with good plate discipline and some speed, but he has no power and apparently he’s very shaky defensively. BA even calls him a 4th outfielder. We already have Brantley in our system in the form of Trevor Crowe. While he’s older, he also has more power and a better glove.

Atleast with Green or Lucroy you have players that can stay in the infield and have more tools than Brantley.

If Brantley’s K% this year was a real indicator of his skill, and not a fluke, it is a better skill than anything Crisp ever displayed in the minors. For that matter, it is a better skill than anything Lofton displayed aside from Lofton’s speed. And not striking out is probably a better skill than being fast, especially given Brantley is not slow. There are a lot of nice things about Brantley, but that K% from this season is the single best number about him. The extent to which it reflects Brantley’s real ability will go a long way in determining what kind of ceiling he probably has.

Obviously there will be an increase in power with age. But I remain skeptical in the absence of evidence to the contrary that his baseline power (age-adjusted), which to this point has been very minimal, will show a dramatic increase. His has a track record of pounding the ball into the ground.
