i actually wonder this about all players, particularly catchers, about how much of the other language typical players speak.

I think managers have less to worry about. Obviously to relate to the player it would help, but for the in-game stuff or for relaying information there’s going to be someone on the bench who can translate for him.
I’m with you on catchers. I would hope there are a couple of basic things—“stay low,” “keep your shoulder in,” etc etc—that either the pitcher knows in English or the catcher knows in Spanish (assuming it’s the catcher who is the English speaker, of couse). Or maybe he just needs to make sure there’s a Spanish-speaking infielder coming to the mound with him.

was almost going to reply agian and say “and coaches” too. a carl willis needs to be confident everything he’s saying to fausto is getting through, no?

Yes he does. I’m not sure if he’s ever out there without any one of Marte, Valbuena, Cabrera, or Peralta, but if he is Fausto should at least understand the gist of it having been through the minors and pitched on this team for a few years.

I’m pretty sure that I’ve read where Willis has picked up enough spanish to communicate effectively to the pitchers. Could be wrong, though.

The real issue probably comes from guys like Masa. You see him nodding on the mound during conferences, so I guess we can assume that there are certain words/phrases one of them has learned in the other’s language. “Inside,” yadda yadda.

I’ve asked about this before. Jordan Brown said that most every player speaks enough English to make in-game decisions. And Mirabelli said the staff throughout the organization (and I dunno, maybe the players as well) all have contractual incentives to learn Spanish.
