Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Look, something to distract us from the end of this horrid season!

The Indians are holding a competition on their website to choose the "All-Time 9" - which in this case means the nine best-hitting single seasons by position.

Surprisingly easy to call other than the outfield.

by Jay on Sep 15, 2009 5:28 PM EDT reply actions

yeah, who did you pick for the 3 OF spots?

by JP_Frost on Sep 15, 2009 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t look too deeply into it, but Manny, Belle, Juan and Tris Speaker jumped out.

Tough to tell with only idiot stats to go on.

I used some BRef magic to get my list. A couple seasons not on this list that I think should have been – Belle’s ‘94, and Glen Myatt’s ’24.

by Voltaire on Sep 15, 2009 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I went Belle ’95, Manny ’99, and Speaker ’23

by Roger Dorn on Sep 15, 2009 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions

yep same here. i was thinking long and hard about including Jackson’s season, but in the end I went for Speaker.

by JP_Frost on Sep 15, 2009 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Not that it puts him over the top in an offense-only poll, but Lofton’s numbers are in a strike-shortened season, and he still swiped 60.

vic and sandy pretty close. and you could argue for thome.

by emil minty on Sep 15, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Thome is the clear winner. You have to look at league context, the OPS+ isn’t even close.

Victor had 62 walks to Sandy’s 19 — so his OBP was higher despite Sandy’s 24-point lead in batting average. Victor also had three more doubles and four more home runs.

by Jay on Sep 15, 2009 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

i was looking primarily at ops+, as they come from different eras, and rosen’s was 12 percentage higher. you might be looking at thome in 02 rather than 96?

i take your point on vic and sandy.

by emil minty on Sep 16, 2009 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Meant Thome in ’02. Rosen is basically unbeatable.

richie sexson? and what, no paul sorrento?

Clemson – look at that 2006 DH you missed out on.

Dodgers, Rockies, Giants, Padres and Diamondbacks. Oh my!

by westbrook on Sep 15, 2009 6:39 PM EDT reply actions

I did. I picked him too because I’m bitter I missed him.

i forgot how awesome robbie alomar was. he was great in the 3 hole.

by johnf34 on Sep 15, 2009 8:01 PM EDT reply actions

His 2001 campaign was actually even a little better, but they were both great.

by Jay on Sep 15, 2009 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Here are my picks:

C-Vic 2007 (although Myatt’s 1924 is very underrated)
1B-Thome 2002, dominating year
2B-Lajoie 1904 (although Robbie’s numbers look amazing, Nap had a 205 OPS+ that season)
3B-Rosen 1953, MVP season
SS-Boudreau, 1948 ditto
LF-Belle 1995 (50-50 .. amazing feat, although his strike shortened 1994 season may actually be better, but not on this list)
CF-Speaker 1923 (although 1916 and 1922 seasons are also worth consideration)
RF-Manny 1999 (I’d rather Manny 2000, and Joe Jacksons 1911-1913 are up there too)

Keep in mind Belle’s 95 was also shortened.

by Roger Dorn on Sep 16, 2009 8:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes, but not nearly as shortened as 94 was.

Keeping in mind another post on here about the greatness of Jeter, I went from the Indians all-time lineup to the Yankees.

Just looking at their outfielders and trying to pick 3 was enough to give me fits. Their top 6 outfielders could’ve been on any team’s top 3.

I think we can all agree that the Yankees suck, but looking over that list of outfielders is mighty impressive. I think I went with Ruth, Mantle and DiMaggio.
