If the Indians fire Eric Wedge, Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell will not be their next manager.
From Rosenthal about Farrell's current contract.

The exact length and complete terms of Farrell’s contract are not known, but he likely gave up his right to manage before 2011 in exchange for a like show of commitment by the Red Sox.
I’m calling BS on this. Would any MLB team flat-out deny someone in their system from taking a promotion with another team?

perhaps not, but he might choose on his own to honor the contract he signed, presuming that clause is in there.

This was my initial thought, too, when it was mentioned a few days ago. I’ve never heard of any other team doing this with any other coach.

Why promote Lovullo?

To be more specific, what has Lovullo done in Buffalo/Columbus that has been particularly great?

On one hand, you have Farrell who was handpicked by the Red Sox to be their pitching coach and has been on a WS winner and part of the most successful organization in baseball of late.
On the other hand, you have Lovullo, who manages a AAA team.
What was your question again?

Weren’t Romeo Crennel, Charlie Weis, and Eric Mangini hand-picked by the Patriots, the most successful NFL organization of late?

Of course it doesn’t, but we are talking about hypotheticals at the moment, and currently there is a lot more reason to believe that Farrell is more qualified than Lovullo.

Come on now, a young manager with some success in the minors but with no major-league coaching experience. What could possibly go wrong?
by FredOx on Sep 28, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It should be noted Farrell has yet actually to manage a Major or Minor league game.

Because relying on minor league performance worked so well the last time?

Let’s just say it worked until it didn’t, I guess.

The point is that if we’re talking qualifications, at least Lovullo has some kind of managerial experience. That said, I’d still prefer to see Farrell get the job.

I like the end of the first sentence but I don’t think football applies this time.

Superfluous football comment! Fifteen yard penalty.

Wasn’t Meriwether Lewis hand-picked by the United States of America, the most successful nation in the world at that time, for the cross-continent expedition? He was later chosen to be governor of the Louisiana Territory and got into so much trouble that he killed himself.

Brandon Meriweather is doing quite well for himself. Greg Lewis too, apparently.

For some reason? Even if you disagree that he should be the next manager, it’s not like people are picking his name out of hat. A lot of people in the business think of Farrell as one of the more knowledgeable baseball people around. He has a strong track record of working with veteran pitchers and up and coming arms alike. He knows the Indians organization and system really well. I’m sure we’re not the only team that would like to interview him.
