I’m waiting until Spring Training to see if that’s an actuality or was just speculation. I’m getting more apprehensive about this rotation. I imagine the front office is pretty unsure as well, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they kick the tires of Raffy as a starter in ST to potentially help stop the bleeding if the current crapshoot doesn’t pan out by June.

he is not starting. too lazy to look, but i think castrovince debunked this by way of someone with the indians. if nothing else for the work load, i believe.
wasn’t it Shapiro himself who said that stretching Perez’ innings would take too long and would be too much of a risk?
I hope you’re correct. Eighth inning set-up guys don’t exactly grow on trees.

For 850K, how bad of a starter could he be? He couldn’t be much worse than he was as a reliever last season.
Except his number of innings pitched would remain the same regardless.
I just wanted to believe.

But by starting him, we would move last season’s patented eighth inning meltdown to the first inning … giving the team a lot more time to make up the deficit.

Wonder what Pittsburgh would give us for him?

Hey, Hoynsie: I’ve read about Rafael Perez’s good winter as a starting pitcher and that he does better given time to get out of jams. Now couple that with the Tribe’s desperate need of effective starters, and you get Rafael Perez in the bullpen again? Why not give him a shot as a starting pitcher? — Alan Tracey, San Jose, Calif.
Hey, Alan: Pitching coach Tim Belcher is intrigued by the idea of using Perez as a starter, but only in an emergency. He doesn’t think it would be fair to ask him to throw between 180 and 200 innings this year.
But I wouldn’t be surprised if the subject is revisited sometime during the upcoming season in preparation for 2011.
This is from Hoynes today (that’s right, Paul Hoynes, you know the man).
So Raffy Perez spot starts?,
