Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

It's preliminary, given that roster churn may still be ahead. But, in a close division, the south side pitching might just be enough to win.

Pffft – Rob Neyer. You know what I get outta this? Twins run away with it.

I’ve got the AL Central champ losing in the divisional playoffs 3-0.

well, the Royals are still trusting The Process. Good luck with that.

I couldn’t imagine being a Royals fan these days. With both Bowden and Bavasi out, is there a worse-run organization?

Worse? Perhaps not. But the Astros and Mets are pretty bad.

Has any team spent more money with less results than the Mets?

The Dodgers try every year but sometimes fall short.

by Jay on Jan 30, 2010 9:51 AM EST up reply actions

The Dodgers had a four-year stretch (2000-2003) of being a Top-5 payroll team with no playoff appearances, but they’ve been in the postseason in four of their last five Top-10 payroll years. Metsies do take the honors, with 1 playoff appearance to show for seven straight Top-5 payroll seasons (streak current), but interestingly, the perfecta of Tigers and White Sox have 1 appearance for their last five Top-5 payroll years, all since 2006.

The weakest division in the AL?

Last year the NL West send two (2) teams to the play-offs while the AL Central provided cannon fodder for the Yankees.

Thank God we’re not in the NL West otherwise it would take another year or two to even have a shot at a play-off berth.

I love how Neyer calls it “the Glamour Division.”

by JulioBernazard on Jan 31, 2010 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, pairing Ed Wade with Drayton is tough to top.
Someone in the Mets organization told me a few years back that the culture there was so toxic, he was always afraid to be the first one to try the food…

These aren’t Neyer’s projections, just commentary by Neyer on the projection system that was accurate last year.

Plus, Lariano has looked phenominal in Winter leagues, like his rookie self. He’s thier possible fifth pitcher in the roatation! Wow.

Don’t forget Cy Young winner Fausto!

by The Grimace on Jan 30, 2010 9:36 PM EST up reply actions

I saw highlights of his most recent game on Baseball Tonight. Looked like every K was on a nasty slider. If his arm can take it and he throws it like that, he’ll be back to where he was.

And, to a lesser degree, Fausto Carmona.

I figured out where the Sox are going to get their 88 wins, beating up on the hapless Royals and Indians.

Go 30-8 against the Tribe and the Royals and you just have to go 58-66 against the rest of the big leagues.

How about going 38-0 against the Tribe and Royals and then 50-74 against everyone else.

I've really got to change my signature.

Here’s hoping the pale hose miss out on the last day and those prospects lead to a wild card spot for the Padres. Us? we are always the unknown in the division. Why is that? I already know. People in Ohio, ignore Lebron and buy some tix.

People in Ohio should be ignoring the Browns, they are the worst in entertainment for your dollar (well, I guess how the Indians played last year might put them in the running too).

It’s a football state. Just the way it is.

by dgcambridge on Feb 6, 2010 10:44 AM EST up reply actions

I wasn’t implying Cleveland doesn’t have good fans. I think the city has great fans. I just don’t like advocating only rooting for the winning teams or the well run teams. I want to stick by my team no matter how poorly run they are.

by Roger Dorn on Feb 6, 2010 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

Plus you are only dealing with 16 football games a year, once a week on weekends when most people aren’t working. Football lends itself to better attendance.

No question. However, baseball does allow you to follow a team on multiple levels of the organization, so that “good right now” isn’t the only type of “good enough to be worth following.”

Good luck selling tickets to that.

They actually sell quite well, in the Indians organization and most others. They’re just not the expensive tickets.

by Jay on Feb 6, 2010 4:00 PM EST up reply actions

I’m sure that you’re not advocating using minor league revenues to sustain the major league club are you? You’re gonna need to sell a whole hellova lot of Aeros seats to meet that $15M short fall next year.

Resident LGT results-oriented boob.

by mauichuck on Feb 6, 2010 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

No, of course not. I’m just saying, the do sell tickets to it, and they sell well. Anyway, the real issue isn’t the tickets, it’s the media revenue.

by Jay on Feb 6, 2010 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

I consider it the right of a fan to not follow teams that are comically mismanaged. The Browns have just recently (kinda sorta) moved out of that category.
