This. Serious LOL.

Laugh if you will, but I’ve never been more hopeful for the Mariners. I fully expect Wedge to lead the Mariners of all teams to a WS victory to make me hate my existence as a Tribe fan even more.

I just posted a comment at Lookout Landing that ended with a similar statement

by APV on Oct 15, 2010 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

And started with a subject line.

I’m feeling a bit defeated at the moment

by APV on Oct 15, 2010 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

They only need about eight sticks to make that happen.

So, about ten days until we get some articles about MB turning over a new leaf.

with the Dodgers after Wedge decides it would be innovative to trade him there.

So, how exactly is this going to work with Wedge and Bradley?

by Ryan on Oct 15, 2010 6:44 PM EDT reply actions

I expect MB to be the choir boy if only to prove that the prior problems were all Wedge.

Good one, sandman.

So St. Louis has about 70 days to get him in town.

Bradley will have the patented WedgeBot chip implanted this offseason, turning him into an android devoid of emotion and incapable of having a plan at the plate.

by JulioBernazard on Oct 16, 2010 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions

You ’d have to ask a Mariner fan, only they are allowed to opine on their team.

Shapiro on Wedge (what he says and what he doesn’t say):

Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said Friday afternoon that he was unaware that his former skipper would be managing the Mariners, but said whoever secured his services would be getting, “An impact guy who can make a difference.”

“The GM that hires him is going to get a guy that will be in the trenches with him elbow-to-elbow.”

Shapiro added, “You won’t find a manager who works as hard or cares as much and is as driven to succeed as Eric. He was outstanding in every aspect of the game for us.”

Wedge has “clear strengths, toughness, complete preparation and consistency in his approach,” according to Shapiro. “He is not afraid to hold someone accountable and the players will understand his expectations. He’s not the kind of guy to let things slide.”

Shapiro said it was a difficult decision to part ways with Wedge a little more than a year ago, but it was a move that he felt had to be made.

Wedge has "clear strengths, toughness, complete preparation and consistency in his approach,"

And they are…..

The Once and Future King

by FlaGators on Oct 16, 2010 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

More aptly punctuated, this might be

Wedge has “clear strengths: toughness, complete preparation and consistency in his approach,”
which would then answer the query as to what the strengths were/are.

Come on, four billion!

by Joel D on Oct 17, 2010 8:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Seems likely to be what Shapiro meant.

by Jay on Oct 17, 2010 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I was hoping to root for Wedge at his next job. I guess that’s out the window.

Winner’s curse?

I was just rummaging around Milton Bradley’s stats and came across another serious strike against Jack Z.

Undisclosed at the time of the Silva-Bradley swap, or at least I know knew about it, was the fact that the Mariners are sending $9 million in cash to the Cubs in the deal.

So initially, it seemed that this was a swap of equally bad contracts. Bradley was owed $21 million for two seasons, and Silva was owed $25 million for two seasons.

The Cubs (improbably I would say) have soundly “won” that deal straight-up swap so far. Silva was healthy enough to make 21 starts, slightly better than league average. He was particularly good in his first 16 games, making 13 quality starts and completing 5+ innings in all 16. Bradley, meanwhile, had a major emotional crisis and was a replacement-level player for 73 games.

But it wasn’t a straight swap. The Mariners sent $3.5 million to the Cubs this season and will send $5.5 million next season. Silva ended the season badly, but the Cubs essentially have him on a one-year deal now for a mere $6 million.

In other words, the Cubs traded a $21 million deal with Bradley for a $16 million deal with Silva. The Mariners, however, traded a $25 million deal with Silva for a $30 million deal with Bradley.

Jack Z is looking dumber all the time.

by Jay on Oct 17, 2010 4:29 PM EDT reply actions

The Milton Bradley obsession has always been the most peculiar thing for me when it comes to the M’s fans. To assume they won the trade just by getting rid of Silva was one of the more flawed premises I have seen, especially since it’s almost a given that a pitcher going to the NL will improve.

by Roger Dorn on Oct 17, 2010 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I assumed it was a can’t-lose-but-probably-can’t-win situation for them. I was wrong.

Hard to say what I would have said about it at the time, had I known about the cash, but looking at the comparison in my next-to-last paragraph, it’s pretty clear that the Cubs were making the better swap.

by Jay on Oct 17, 2010 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

That is staggering.

by afh4 on Oct 17, 2010 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Wizard is the description I really like. As a fan of the Brewers I was kind of thinking, that maybe they should have just heaved Doug Melvin overboard and kept Z as all you ever heard about him was good. Not that Melvin doesn’t scare me, but so long Jack.

I saw your fanshot over at LL and all the sourness and odd rationalizations made me laugh. One guy I thought should be flagged, but he’s a moderator!

Where’s Peaches? Where’s Herb?

by emd2k3 on Oct 17, 2010 8:40 PM EDT reply actions

Let me rephrase that:

Which one is Peaches, and which one is Herb?

by emd2k3 on Oct 17, 2010 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m gonna say that Milton is Peaches and Wedge is Herb.

by Jay on Oct 17, 2010 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmmm … first Hargrove, and now Wedge. I sure hope Acta likes Seattle in about 5 years.

by talonk on Oct 18, 2010 6:16 PM EDT reply actions

Not to mention Sexson, Broussard, Branyan and Eduardo Perez. With that track record, how can they not sign Garko?

Also in 2010: Gutierrez, Bradley, Lee.

Hey, remember when Bavasi traded for 2B Jose Vidro to be his DH? Good times.

by Jay on Oct 18, 2010 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

You know, I thought they had, but then I looked it up and saw no Seattle stats for him. Forgot how that all went down.

Anyway … expect it again.
