DYE

Hello. New to the board and this is my first FANPOST if I do something wrong let me know (its a blog so I am sure you will). Anyway, I am really confused why the Indians would not scoop up Jermaine Dye he provides everything the Indians need.

1. Power hitting RIGHT handed bat (HR 31,44, 28,34,27) and an OPS of .800 every year until last year it was .790

2. Fielding is really not that terrible considering Ryan Garko was playing the outfield for us last year. Dye's fielding percentage really has been pretty consistent throughout his career. I understand he might have lost some range so that can be skewed

3. I think Dye would play 1B and DH and maybe some LF. We might need him if Hafner gets hurt again or Laporta needs more time.He would be a great fill in.

4. One Year contract for minimal expense.

4. Finally he is better than Shelley Ducan and Austin Kearns.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the great site and I can't wait for the season to get going!

john heyman this morning on mlb network suggested this was in the works. which makes me think john heyman is not paying as close attention as i had previously thought. one bad year isn’t going to make a 36-year-old Dye sign-on as a backup to laporta and a platooner in left field.

by emil minty on Feb 12, 2010 2:20 PM EST reply actions

If your saying this doesn’t sound like a move the Indians would make, I agree.

But if you are saying Dye is going to get a much better offer than 1 year as something in between starter and platooner, I’d say look closer at what aging position players are getting this off season.

I agree he is aging but if you can get one more year out of him great. If not, let Marte platy more. I think its a win-win. He is going to be cheap and might just be productive.

Can he pitch?

No thats why we could us another bat? Lotsof 10-8 games this year.

by johio1 on Feb 12, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

Dye is just sunk cost in that case. We aren’t winning enough of those with him out there to make an appreciable difference.

by Brad D on Feb 13, 2010 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

Fangraphs recently ran an article on why Dye might not be a good fit for some teams, but with the Indians’ left-handedness through the middle (Valbuena, Asdrubal, Grady, Choo, Brantley and potentially Santana and whoever else), there might be some use in getting Dye if you can get him at the right price. If you choose to put LaPorta in LF, Dye could possibly even play 1B like Cameron suggested.

Just a thought.

But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright Brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.

I’d rather see what Andy Marte, Michael Brantley and Matt Laporta can do than pay an overpriced veteran on the downside to steal their playing time.

Dye might be the guy that can take us to .500 this year and I say “so what?”. If his at bats delays the maturation of any of our future regulars, all we did was steal a possible pennant from ourselves in a future year. LGT is, if not the only, then one of the few places where fans consider the ramifications of signings beyond the current year.

by elsandito on Feb 12, 2010 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

I actually understand that but… I think the team being .500 and giving youngsters plenty of playing time helps us in revenue as well. Plus if he has a good first half who knows what a team will give us… I also think a lot of his at bats will be for Hafner

by johio1 on Feb 12, 2010 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

You want to commit payroll for a guy to bat for Hafner in a year we aren’t going anywhere.

by elsandito on Feb 12, 2010 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

I’m gonna go ahead and say there’s no way the revenue that we’d earn if Dye magically took us from 74-78 to 80-84 wins would be more than his cost.

by Gradyforpresident on Feb 14, 2010 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

Generally, I would have to agree.

I do wonder, however, about the marginal effect on following-year ticket sales of marginal wins between 75 and 85. It’s easy to look at an 83-win team and see them as on the brink of contention. That same team easily could have won only 79, yet it seems to me the difference in the fans’ sense of the club’s quality is going to be far greater.

I maybe should engage Vince Gennaro to see if he can talk about this. Revenue value of marginal wins generally is very focused on the odds of being in a pennant race and making the playoffs, which is where the money is. I wonder what his data is, however, on the value of wins from 75 to 85, in a season where the club doesn’t reasonably expect to contend anyway, based on the effect on ticket sales the following year.

by Jay on Feb 14, 2010 7:27 PM EST up reply actions

Well, the question is even more Moot because Dye alone isn’t going to make this a +6 win team.

by Gradyforpresident on Feb 15, 2010 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

No idea why I capitalized moot.

I assume those guys will get plenty of playing time even with DYE. I agree Brantley and LaPorta should get plenty of playing time… I am not as excited about Marte … but thats just me

What do you mean by “DYE”?

No, not you. Your helmet!

by PatBordersHelmet on Feb 12, 2010 6:15 PM EST up reply actions

Haha. I’ve been reading this as some sort of acronym as well.

It is in fact the surname of free-agent outfielder Jermaine Dye.

by still ill on Feb 13, 2010 2:44 AM EST up reply actions

But why the all-caps version twice? I’m confounded.

No, not you. Your helmet!

“DYE….DYE….DYE……I can’t.”

by cleveland teamer on Feb 14, 2010 10:26 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I think you could make an argument that Brantley might benefit from another year in Columbus, and if that’s the case Laporta will see time in LF and Dye can spell Hafner or play 1B when Marte or Laporta aren’t.

But in terms of the maturation of young talent, I agree with you. And I’d like to emphasize that the contract would also have have to be favorable for the Indians.

But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright Brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.

by gorilla_baller on Feb 12, 2010 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

Frankly, the only contract that I see for Dye that would be favorable for the Indians is if he pays the team to allow him to play.

do we really need to put ‘for the right price’ provisos on things anymore? i don’t think anyone would have called you out as advocating signing dye no matter the cost.

Finally he is better than Shelley Ducan and Austin Kearns.

Probably, but I wouldn’t suggest that we bother spending $1 M to find out.

by dgcambridge on Feb 12, 2010 6:25 PM EST reply actions

I think a healthy Austin Kearns would actually have darn good a shot at having a better season than an ancient Jermaine Dye. Which is probably like saying that a unicorn might be faster than an old horse, but I’m still irrationally optimistic about his chances of bouncing back to at least a serviceable utility guy/trading chip, depending on how the outfield shapes up.

by VA tribe fan on Feb 14, 2010 12:58 AM EST up reply actions

Fielding is really not that terrible considering Ryan Garko was playing the outfield for us last year.

Ryan Garko being a god-awful outfielder does not make Jermaine Dye a “not terrible” outfielder. That’s not a low bar, that’s an underground bar.

by Manhattan Tribe Fan on Feb 12, 2010 7:46 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I don’t know why he suggested that we should consider Dye because he is a better defender than Garko, Garko isn’t on the team anymore, nor is the man who placed him in LF managing the team anymore. Dye is a very bad defensive outfielder.

by hans on Feb 13, 2010 2:19 AM EST up reply actions

Dye is also a better defender than Trot Nixon. Possibly even Mo Vaughn.

by Jay on Feb 13, 2010 10:51 AM EST up reply actions

I’m not in support of signing Dye at all. I don’t remotely understand the point.

by MickS on Feb 12, 2010 8:20 PM EST reply actions

Signing Dye only makes sense if you are hoping to compete for the division title.

Signing somebody like Dye so you can go from a 75 win team to a 80 win team is what the Royals do.

by Toxicadam on Feb 12, 2010 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

The Royals are deluding themselves if they think they can win as many as 75 games next year, with or without Jermaine Dye.

pluto reporting[?] the indians think they can sign DYE to a minor league contract.

by emil minty on Feb 14, 2010 6:55 PM EST reply actions

Or Blalock, or Branyan. Blalock’s no.1 similar batter according to B-Ref is none other than Casey Blake. He’ll be 29, but it’s unclear if he can still play 3B. I don’t care how many lefties we have, I’d love to have Branyan back.

In the “almost news” category:

. Jeremy Sowers is in Goodyear for spring training, but the lefty is having some shoulder problems. The Indians say it is inflammation and soreness. They don’t think it’s serious, but won’t know for sure until he begins to try to throw in game conditions. This may not be a red flag, but it certainly is a caution flag. Because he’s out of minor-league options, Sowers was in position to make the roster either as a starter or long reliever. But if he’s hurt, then that opens another spot.

by Toxicadam on Feb 15, 2010 1:03 AM EST up reply actions

The big implication is this: If he’s hurt, it won’t be too hard to DFA him and get him to Columbus.

by Jay on Feb 15, 2010 3:21 AM EST up reply actions

that might be a blessing in disguise, as it opens up a spot for one of Ambriz/Talbot to show us what they can do.

by JP_Frost on Feb 15, 2010 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

Sure. Although I’m pretty sure we have nothing more to learn from seeing Jeremy in the minors.
