Around SBN: Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire Vow To Fit In With Lin

I lead off sbnation.com's Spring Training Preview series with the team (according to Vegas odds) least likely to win the World Series.

And yes, some of those projections I pulled out of the air. Or another three-lettered place.

by Ryan on Mar 1, 2010 6:07 PM EST reply actions

That’s staggering. Worse odds than any other team?

by afh4 on Mar 1, 2010 6:16 PM EST reply actions

I think the Nationals and Royals had just as bad odds, but Cleveland is first alphabetically.

by Ryan on Mar 1, 2010 6:21 PM EST up reply actions

sorry, it was the Padres and Royals.

by Ryan on Mar 1, 2010 6:22 PM EST up reply actions

The Nats have better odds than us? This just makes me sad – and it makes me want to go to Vegas and put down $20 on the Tribe (cause you never know).

I just wanted to believe.

by mjmarble on Mar 1, 2010 6:36 PM EST up reply actions

Remember, the odds are set up to even out the money on both sides of the wager. With LV being a big destination for Clevelanders, the WS odds are probably somewhat higher (and the over/under lower) than the reality-based, non-Hoynes reading population would estimate.

by spreidel on Mar 2, 2010 12:29 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah I sort of spit out my coffee when I read that as well. I’m pretty sure we aren’t going to be the worst team in baseball, though I suppose I can’t say I’ll be surprised if it turns out that way.

by jakesinger777 on Mar 1, 2010 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I was in Vegas last week, and just had to put 10 bucks down on the Tribe to win it all at 100-1.

by supermarioelia on Mar 1, 2010 8:56 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Ten bucks Canadian?

by odradek on Mar 1, 2010 11:37 PM EST up reply actions

Surprisingly, the Venetian would not accept 10 loonies as compensation.

by supermarioelia on Mar 2, 2010 10:10 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not sure whether to rec the work or flag the odds.

And I’m just realizing that Marson is likely to spend the 2nd half of the year in Columbus.

But for extreme ST results, I still see Laffey in the pen with Huff starting…

I could really use an oscillation overthruster

Because of the picture at the head of the article I am now an Austin Kearns fan.

Well that was depressing.

Soon, I’ll make my trip to Reno to place my annual bets on the upcoming season. For me, it makes the baseball season a little more interesting. The drive is really pretty behind Mt Lassen and the High desert; snow on both sides of the road and huge meadows. I always bet the tribe to win the division, pennant, and world series. I never bet against them, nor do I bet allot. I’ll also place wagers on other divisions based odds and how good I think they are. I picked up Colorado in 2007, but for the most part, I throw away allot of stubs. Anyone got any hot tips? I see the Cardinals right now, perhaps the Giants…. looking for ideas….

by larzko on Mar 2, 2010 10:26 AM EST reply actions

I’d say Tampa Bay or (on a whole other level) Oakland. Perhaps the Brewers, if their rotation looks healthy.

by dgcambridge on Mar 2, 2010 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

I liked Tampa the year before they went to the series. American league is division races only. I do think they’ll be one to consider this year.

by larzko on Mar 2, 2010 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

Not the Giants.

Brown, Jordan is an example of this.

by cleveland teamer on Mar 2, 2010 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

Current rankings for Most Likely To Be Traded By August:

1. Peralta
2. Westbrook (#2 only based on further injury issues)
3. Wood (I think well behind the top two)
4. Brown
5. Marson
6. Branyan
7. Marte (not if Peralta leaves)
8. Hafner + $$$
9. Kearns
10. Redmond (if not Marson)
11. JLewis
12. Grilli/Rivera

by dgcambridge on Mar 2, 2010 11:37 AM EST reply actions

i think marson is high. also, too far up on the list.

toregas will be the catcher for columbus for the next 8 years unless he changes agents to boras.

by Brick. on Mar 2, 2010 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

You may be right, it’s just a question of whether Marson is good enough to start for another team, which should mean he’s much more valuable to that team than he is to ours.

That’s a tortured sentence. You would think I could do better since I made the same argument about Shoppach a couple of years ago.

by dgcambridge on Mar 2, 2010 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

“we’re in the business of stockpiling passable catching talent.”

by Brick. on Mar 2, 2010 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, Marson feels like an offseason move, and not even necessarily this year. Why would we trade him when he’s such a good, cheap backup for Santana for a few years? Recent history suggests that we don’t make that trade.

by Jay on Mar 2, 2010 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

Also…Marson will actually be good.

by odradek on Mar 2, 2010 11:05 PM EST up reply actions

Again with the blind optimism.

Again with the irrational love for mediocre catchers.

Again with the jargon.

by Jay on Mar 3, 2010 6:58 AM EST up reply actions

High OBP catchers just clog up the basepaths. Especially if the slugging percentage is lower than the OBP. See John Mizerock and Butch Wynegar.

by odradek on Mar 3, 2010 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

Which is why you loved Shoppach, right? Keep that SLG > OBP!

by Jay on Mar 3, 2010 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

I’m looking forward to seeing a catcher take a base on balls rather than swinging wildly at a pitch six feet out of the strike zone.

by odradek on Mar 4, 2010 8:07 PM EST up reply actions

We won’t know how terrible Marson looks in a slump until he actually has one. I suspect that I will agree with you, though.

by Jay on Mar 5, 2010 1:25 AM EST up reply actions

I meant to say, “swinging wildly at an 0-2 pitch six feet out of the strike zone.”

I am inspired by Marson’s .433 OBP in Reading in 2008.

by odradek on Mar 5, 2010 1:34 AM EST up reply actions

Meh … It’s Reading. Everybody can get to first base there.

STBNL

by emd2k3 on Mar 5, 2010 12:27 PM EST up reply actions

Have you ever been to Reading?

by odradek on Mar 5, 2010 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

I think Kearns is far more likely to leave in return for “cash considerations” than Brown.

by Voltaire on Mar 2, 2010 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

Not sure I agree. Kearns has to earn a job and play well. There’s a good chance that he’s done.

by dgcambridge on Mar 2, 2010 12:09 PM EST up reply actions

To put it another way, anybody could have had Kearns this offseason. He has something to prove.

by dgcambridge on Mar 2, 2010 12:09 PM EST up reply actions

Also! Kearns sucks. He needs to show he doesn’t.

< / guy who wants LaPorta to play 150 games in LF >

by westbrook on Mar 2, 2010 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

I just feel like there are teams that will go “Oooh! Kearns! Shiny veteran.”

It only takes one.

by Voltaire on Mar 2, 2010 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

Kearns most comparable player by age:

26: Frank Thomas
29: Candy Maldonado

by Voltaire on Mar 3, 2010 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

That’s vintage Frank Thomas, btw.

by Voltaire on Mar 3, 2010 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

For better or worse, that is also vintage Candy Maldonado.

by APV on Mar 3, 2010 5:36 PM EST up reply actions

This is not the Frank Thomas that first springs to mind.

by SuddenSam on Mar 4, 2010 7:51 AM EST up reply actions

Branyan only being the 6th most likely to be dealt doesn’t feel right.

Steel Nick

by nickjs21 on Mar 2, 2010 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

I think he’s clearly ahead of Marson and Brown just because someone might want him.

by afh4 on Mar 2, 2010 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

As opposed to Brown, of course. The Marson thing, what Jay said.

by afh4 on Mar 2, 2010 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

But we don’t want Brown.

by dgcambridge on Mar 2, 2010 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

I think Brown is as likely to get cut as traded.

by afh4 on Mar 2, 2010 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

Cut from the 40? Sure.

by afh4 on Mar 2, 2010 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

I just think he has some value. If we needed that spot, I think we could trade him easily.

by dgcambridge on Mar 2, 2010 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

Not convinced. There are lots of realistic scenarios in which his tenuous value craters. Any dip in performance or health and Brown becomes untradable, I think. Or else only tradable in the Vinny Pestano sense.

by afh4 on Mar 2, 2010 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

untradable? untradeable? who knows.

by afh4 on Mar 2, 2010 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

He has all his option years, he’s cheap. I know we like to joke about his batting average, but I swear that teams will look at his OPS and take a flier on him. I think we’ve pushed the Jordan-Brown-is-horrible angle too far.

by dgcambridge on Mar 2, 2010 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

I really don’t. Brown is in his 26 season and has never seen the majors, pretty much entirely because of his faults. It’s not as if he’s been mired behind Pujols.

by afh4 on Mar 2, 2010 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

Well he was mired behind Garko.

/wait for it, wait for it/

by hans on Mar 3, 2010 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

There’s always Brian Sabean.

Also, I could see them trying to push him through waivers instead of trading him and then just losing him. Have I got those contract rules right? Or is this one of those things where if he gets claimed we have to get a piece back?

by afh4 on Mar 2, 2010 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, Andrew. In your face!

by Jay on Mar 2, 2010 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

Can we make this a rank by odds list, I have a feeling there’s going to be alot of gambling for entertainment around these parts this season.

by hans on Mar 3, 2010 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

this would be cool
