Here's the rules for the league:
Player Pool: Mixed (AL and NL)

Trade Deadline: 8-19-2010
Waiver Policy: Unlimited Claims per Period (Period = week), Waiver priority based on inverse order of standings (reset each period).
Here's the scoring system for the league (subject to change if there are any vociferous objections):
Scoring System Type: Head-to-Head
Win Determination: Each Category is a Win. This means that there's 10 category wins per matchup per week.
Tiebraker: None (leave them as ties)
Batting Categories (5): Home Runs (HR), On-Base Percentage (OBP), Runs (R), Runs Batted In (RBI), Net Stolen Bases (SB-CS)
Pitching Categories (5): Earned Run Average (ERA), Strikeouts Minus Walks, Saves (S), Quality Starts (QS), WHIP
Our next step is to fill out the rosters via a draft. I'd like to have the draft in a week or so, and if possible, have it live.

We could pretty much do it anytime at this point and I’d be OK, but weeknights work the best.
Welcome back, Sandy! ATALECG...
I’d like to give everyone a bit of time to understand the scoring rules and come up with a draft strategy.
Does next Monday (3-22) at 9:00 PM Eastern work? I’m not sure how many people aren’t in the Eastern Time Zone, but hopefully everyone would be home from work or school by then.
That sounds good to me, at least. Live drafts are great because then everyone can make fun of my strategy, or lack thereof.
I was going to post that, but without the typos. I can’t believe a fantasy league of LGTers is using Runs and RBI for an offensive stat.

I tried a find a better proxy than RBI for run production, but there weren’t any. Runs Created wasn’t available, and though there was a stat called Runs Produced, it was just a combination of RBI and R, so I just went with the components.
This is actually me first time running a serious fantasy league, so please feel free to suggest statistics that could be used instead.
i’m not even playing, but i’ve found the best leagues don’t have a built-in advantage for a certain archetype of player. for example. here you have OBP, Steals, and Runs all stats that favor prototypical leadoff type guys. HR and RBI for middle of the order guys. i’m looking at that and moving down guys that produce, but not via the HR. in other words, a doubles guy that doesn’t also get HR’s doesn’t double-dip as much as a bopper or tripple-dip as much as brian roberts.
i’ll but out of a league that’s none of my business now.
here you have OBP, Steals, and Runs all stats that favor prototypical leadoff type guys.
… who generally don’t exist.
there are enough for a fantasy league. but that’s exactly the point. suddenly chone figgins is more valuable than he probably should be.
no, there really is. with 12 teams, there is just enough elite ones to be essential – roberts, figgins, jeter, victorino, rollins, span, ichiro… but also plenty of nyjer norganses to go around for those that miss out on them to play the system with and will end up being pretty darn valuable in a league like this, especially in a head to head format.
with those settings, you’d better have hanley ramirez but don’t forget luis freaking castillo and make sure you don’t sleep on skip schumaker.
I don’t know, I think having OBP instead of BA helps the slow, plodding types more than the fast, leadoff types.
I did toy with the idea of substituting Total Bases for Home Runs, or Slugging %, to give more weight to doubles, though.
total bases is an interesting idea. i’ve actually been in several leagues that ditch homeruns for slugging. some of it comes down to a preference for ‘counting’ categories versus ‘average’ ones.
again, don’t let me influence a league i’m not even in. i just find it interesting… some people love it the traditional way, even if they recognize it’s not a true value indicator. i just personally find those frustrating.
I play in one league that has used OBP, Slug% and total bases, as well as some pitching categories like K/BB. It’s either 7×7 or 8×7 (or maybe it’s 8×6). Regardless, it’s made me pay a lot more attention to K/BB and OPS when drafting in that league, and to some extent it has carried over into most of my other drafts.

Like Brick, I feel like this is none of my business, and I’ll butt out after this, but here’s the (admittedly complicated) scheme we used in a league i was in for many years (run by a guy who used to be a Bill James researcher). It wasn’t perfect, but I think it did a fairly good job trying to separate out performance (run production and run prevention) from situational influences. Have fun with the league!

Just as a side note – the 4th installment of the Yahoo LGT Fantasy Baseball league will have space available. Looks like there will be somewhere between 2 – 7 spots open.
It’s a bit of a bigger league with 16 teams, 2 divisions, H2H Daily format, using the ML Universe, 24 player (plus 4 DL) teams in a 7×7 league. We’ve also bantered about making it a keeper league, although the details are fuzy on that up to this point. I’ve enjoyed it, although I haven’t done well recently.
If you were in the league in the past, you should have received an email invite. You have until tomorrow to register. Afterwards, I’ll make a seperate post here and take people based upon first come first served. I just wanted to give people a heads up.
I just wanted to believe.
OK, since each time I’ve chosen has been bad for at least one person, please choose the time slots that work for you at this link (thanks, mwball75)
Yahoo League has openings – We have done a 12 team Yahoo 5 by 5 roto league the last few years. I sent out invites last week and have had only 5 players sign up as of this time. I had given everyone until last Saturday to sign up so its time to open it up to any LGT posters who want to play.
Draft is Monday March 22 at 9:15 p.m.
Yahoo ID – 422078
Password – mannyacta
To clarify – this is the Yahoo Roto league, not the Yahoo H2H league which will have openings as of tomorrow morning.
I just wanted to believe.
I never understood while people play fantasy baseball H2H — it should be a marathon, not a sprint.

Because you can effectively be out of a roto league after one bad injury or one bad month. Then it makes playing pointless, completely changing the level of competition for the rest of the year when one or two people have to need to participate.
Welcome back, Sandy! ATALECG...
Play for pride. Or have a deeper roster. Or hit the trade desk.

But see, once you’re just a slightly substantial amount behind in a 12 team league, there is absolutely no way to trade to bridge the gap. I mean, I always kept playing for pride.. or boredom, but it wasn’t fun.
Welcome back, Sandy! ATALECG...
Right, this is exactly the problem. If 9 or 10 of the teams are out of it by July, the trash talk tends to diminish. For that reason, a league I’m in is switching from total points to H2H, this year.

So do I really have the first pick in the draft? That’s what CBS says. Just want to confirm. That sucks in a snake draft. But if so… HanRam is mine!
Where do you see the draft positions?

Why not just use PA for hitters and IP for pitchers? Two stats, nothing more.
Add in some kind of team defense and baserunning component for fun if you like.
We could use K/BB.
