Aguilar looks to have huge K numbers and huge control issues. He’s about 9 months older than Lofgren.
Yeah, the K/BB ratio is similar, but it comes about in a very different way.
Here’s a nice article from last spring.
by dgcambridge on Mar 16, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions
And from way back in Sept 2007, pre-TJ, from a Goldstein winter-ball preview:
The bullpen will be led by a pair of intriguing Brewers arms, but none more so than Omar Aguilar. The 22-year-old right is built like a fireplug and six-foot and roughly 225 pounds, but he also sits at 93-96 mph and has touched triple digits on occasion this year. He struck out 68 this year in 58 innings, but his violent mechanics are a concern, as are the related control problems.

That was my bad, the Goldstein comment was post-TJ.

Apparently a fireplug is a fire hydrant. And this is the first google image…

That article leads me to believe his 2009 was a pretty huge disappointment.
This guy reminds me of Meloan.
They outrighted him off the 40 man earlier this month, so obviously, no one was very excited about him.
by dgcambridge on Mar 16, 2010 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, despite the age difference, he’s thrown about a third of the innings Lofgren has in his career. About 600 to 200.
Splits would have you believe that he got hurt by fielding (or whatever it is that ERA-FIP indicates).
Also, just guessing, but it looks like he was injured at some point last year. He threw 4 IP over his last month.
the man is a downright chameleon according to a google image search. he should come in handy on secret missions.
….maybe, to re-claim any confiscated bats?

Haudricourt in Milwaukee has the story up too. ( http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/87800467.html )
Not to pile on Hoynse at every opportunity, but I remember during the days/hours leading up to the CC trade when Haudricourt was updating his page every 10 minutes and cleveland.com just sat blank until we already knew everything.
Steel Nick
Yes, he was added prior to Rule 5 at the end of 2008, spent the 2009 season on the 40-man (using up his first option year), and then was outrighted two months ago. No major league service time.
Not on the 40 man, two option years remaining once he’s added back. So, hypothetically, he doesn’t have to stick until 2013.

I can tell you he has two option years left AND give you a Phoenix performance.
by dgcambridge on Mar 16, 2010 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions
Found some more info on him:
http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/fanblogs/83955872.html
I’ve read some reports that he’s able to reach the upper 90’s and even triple digits at times, but that both his command and breaking ball are shaky. Live arm though.
Will Caroll likes it. If you’re into tea leaves, maybe this means Aguilar is past any health concerns?
And, somebody on our twitter, Jay I assume, has asked Carroll if it was just driving up value and he responded that the Brewers feelings about Aguilar were “more than just hype.”
All this drama can be followed on the LGT twitter feed, where snide comments, insider info and an RSS feed meet.

Aguilar is friends with Michael Brantley, who came up with the Brewers. The Indians asked Brantley about Aguilar before making the deal.

Our whitest lineup of the spring
LF Crowe, CF Sizemore, RF Choo, DH Hafner, 3B Peralta, 2B Grudz, 1B Marte, C Marson, SS Donald. RHP Westbrook.
Should we be talking about this? I don’t think we should be talking about this.

Current standings:
Grudz over Bixler
Crowe over Kearns over Duncan
Redmond over Toregas (or is it Marson over Toregas)
Marte over, uh, Hodges
LaPorta over Brantley
Talbot
Laffey over Huff
I’m good with this. Where does that put our pen?
Wood
C. Perez
R. Perez
Sipp
Smith
Lewis?
Sowers?
Todd?
Wright?
We anticipate carrying a 7 man pen, yea? And Wright would have to be put on the 40 man.
Welcome back, Sandy! ATALECG...
So Jensen and Jamey Wright probably make it then. I wonder where Grilli would have been had he not been injured.
Welcome back, Sandy! ATALECG...
Castro suggested it’s down to Wright, JLew, Rivera and Ambriz for the final two spots. Rivera does have the Acta ties, and has tossed four scoreless innings this spring (2 hits, 1 walk, 3 K). And Ambriz has the whole Rule 5 thing going for him, I guess.
Listening to Shapiro and pitching coach Tim Belcher, all indications are that Jeremy Sowers (sore left shoulder) will begin the season on the disabled list so that he can adequately stretched out as a starting alternative. The Indians don’t seem to see much value in putting Sowers, who is out of Minor League options, in the ’pen at this point. Sowers will make his spring debut Thursday, working two innings against the Reds.
I noticed that too. “Well, there are four spots open, and there’s already Redmond, Crowe and Grudz, so obviously Marte is out.”
I am officially completely confused as to who is making this club. I guess I’ll figure it out on opening day.

Tough call. Having heard 10,000 of their commercials, I never want another. But I’d guess that they’ve pumped a fair amount of money into the Indians, so that’s good, right?
There has to be a study out there that shows advertising actually works in the opposite. Once a person hears something x amount of times, that person begins to detest the company.
I’m calling BS on this.
When the time comes to get a new insurance policy, if you’re unsatisfied with your current company, you’re going to call Geico, even if you did hate the commercials. You’ll call them because you’ll think of them, and your decision will be based 80% on the money and 20% on your sense of the company from getting the quote (service, ease of use, etc.).
You’re annoyed by the commercials, but are you really wiling to pay cash-money to express your annoyance? I think not.
you think not, but you’re wrong. i literally make decisions like this all the time based on biases even more obscure than this as a consumer.
Well, then, I would caution you not to make big generalities based on your own aberrant habits.
Ask 1000 Americans to name two car insurance companies, a huge number are going to name Geico. That is just about the only thing that matters.
You clearly stated “yep.” Here’s the exact quote:
yep
Shall I provide a link?
by Jay on Mar 17, 2010 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions 2 recs
if you want to take that as meaning “yep, everyone thinks this about geico” so be it, but you’re just fishing for something to bloviate about.
“yep, that’s a good example of one that could fall into that category, since their commercials are similarly annoying and even more frequent.”

Doesn’t Progressive clean up when it comes to insurance? I always got that impression. At least I hope. Semi-local.
Anyway, hard to make less-watchable commercials than those.
Steel Nick
A huge number probably would also say Progressive at this point. Since they’re naming two, there’s room for three or four brands to show a lot of name recognition, but 15 years ago, few had heard of either company. It’s the ads that change that.
You might be right. I am, in fact, a Geico customer—have been for decades. But gad, do I loath their TV commercials.

loosely
“we struck a chord with the marte question”
“that could be. but with the branyan signing it makes it tougher”
then they went on to list brantley, donald and kearns
Brantley – no way. Unless Branyan is hurt (obviously) or they back out of their plan to play him every day.
Kearns – maybe, but hasn’t he looked shaky so far?
Donald – maybe, but again, I would think they’d want him to play everyday. If he was on the roster with grudz, seems redundant. And also, don’t you want a little bit of power on the bench?
I think it’s awesome that Acta is managing both SS games tomorrow, even though it requires 5 hours on the bus.

How about Saul Rivera? One of these guys might make the team.
Here’s what Castro had:
Speaking of the bullpen, Acta has confirmed jobs for Wood, Chris and Rafael Perez, Joe Smith and Tony Sipp. That leaves several guys (Hector Ambriz, Jensen Lewis, Saul Rivera and Jamey Wright) competing for two spots, with the potential for Talbot and, to a lesser degree, Laffey, to enter that mix.
i’m not sure if rivera or wright have ‘roster by’ clauses, but i just assume give abriz a whirl. i mean, give him a month. if he sucks, offer him back then. i don’t see why to make that call at the end of ST for the sake of any of the guys on that list.
I agree. Both Wright and Rivera has minor league deals so they can be sent to Columbus. It might leave Laffey (or Huff) without a roster spot though if you believe Talbot will be the 5th starter (which I do), but both of those guys have options remaining.
aw, hell, let’s just do it.
1. Westbrook
2. Fausto
3. Masterson
4. Talbot
5. Huff if not Laffey
6. Wood
7. Perez
8. Perez
9. Smith
10. Sipp
11. Ambriz
12. Lewis if not Laffey
For about two seconds I thought that was Scott Lewis.
Here is my final PSA on this: HECTOR AMBRIZ IS NOT MAKING THIS TEAM. NO, NO WAY.
No one has strong feelings about Ambriz. But his competition is just Rivera, Wright, Todd, and Reliever Laffey.
I have strong feelings about Ambriz. I’m not sure where they come from but I am positive he won’t make the team.
Keith Law had some good things to say about Ambriz today.
Mitch Talbot threw three perfect innings in relief of David Huff and showed two average pitches in an 89-92 mph fastball and a 79-80 mph changeup. He threw the changeup to both sides of the plate — and the pitch has hard, with late tailing action away from left-handed hitters.
This is only a portion of it since the article is insider.
Yeah, I like to think I’m interested in every battle, but I can’t get worked up about it. I agree, why not try Ambriz, and probably JLewis. I’ll be honest, I’m surprised our bullpen choices aren’t deeper. But maybe it’s just a matter of Judy, Putnam, Cracker, Todd, etc being not quite ready.
Todd really doesn’t have a whole lot to prove in AAA, and should be up pretty quickly imo, but if a guy has options left, why not start the season with some of the relievers you’re not entirely sure about and see what they can do?
i can agree with that as well. just seems like he’s fallen off the possibles list – whether or not he should have
Yeah, he’s somewhat lost in the shuffle. The fact that he hasn’t performed very well in ST as well as his Indians stint last year makes people forget about him more quickly. He needs to face major league hitters though, and if he struggles again, he’ll have a much harder time to make the pen next year if all goes to plan.
I think that’s what it is (Putnam and Judy still need some more minor league experience) combined with the last chance for some guys to prove they deserve a spot (Lewis and Ambriz). The bullpen will likely look a lot different by August/September.

Looking at that thread and posting trends here, I am beginning to suspect you are either Logodaedalus, his brother, or you murdered him to take his role here.

Twenty years ago I drove a friend to Rye, NY, where she was making a student film. While they shot, I wandered, and found a private, gated cemetary, with a big enough hole in the fence to squeeze through. It was the Jay family plot, and it was thrilling and humbling to be standing at John Jay’s grave. Even if we might have had a few political disagreements.
I made a similar suggestion a few weeks ago. Nothing he has posted since has made me think he is not logo.
Since there seem to be skeptics here, we’ve run logo and wags commentary through King’s College/London’s psycholinguistic and cognitive linguistic research models (TDAs), including the investigation of grammatical processing in both native speakers and language learners, the processing of metaphor and metonymy and detailed linguistic analysis of propositional content. Our conclusion, which we are pleased to share here, is unequivocal: this is logodaedalus.

Underwood says that there’s statistical data that shows you bunting “doesn’t really improve your chances, all that much.”
I love how people just cannot straight out say “It hurts your chances.” He’s so attached to the bunt he has to make it seem like it’s a wash or in favor of bunting.
I know that was Rivero, who’s been way better than advertised defensively to my eyes, but has anyone else thought Donald has looked (sounded) downright excellent defensively?
