Here are last years. The Sowers one is still awesome.

Not related to this, but had to post it somewhere.

There is a player for the White Sox whose name is Jhonny Nuñez.
Jhonny impersonator!

Either that, or that’s the way an entire nation spells “Johnny.”

by Jay on Mar 17, 2010 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I was pretty sure Peralta tells a story about how it was misspelled on his birth certificate but he kept it anyway. Could be wrong. Wonder what the story behind this fella’s is.

Welcome back, Sandy! ATALECG...

by USSChoo on Mar 17, 2010 3:07 AM EDT up reply actions

I think we go through this every year, but if I recall correctly that story is wrong. There are two Jhonny’s at the big league level, and there have been 11 minor league Jhonnys (four currently active). All of them are from either the Dominican Republic of Venezuela, except for Jhonny Polanco who is from Nicaragua.

by APV on Mar 17, 2010 8:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, it is not a misspelling. It’s how you make a hard “Ja” sound in Spanish, as opposed to “Ho”

by afh4 on Mar 17, 2010 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions

So have we reached a consensus on how to pronounce Jeanmar Gomez yet?

by APV on Mar 17, 2010 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I pronounce it “Not Kelvin or Hector.”

by afh4 on Mar 17, 2010 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

i’m trying to decide between Hector and Rondon. i like both.

Fausto is a no-brainer. except when you’re mad at him and “Carmona” becomes the “Your Son” of the baseball fan world.

by Brick. on Mar 17, 2010 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

And are we happy with saying it “rone-done”?…I tend to think of it as “Ron-Done” for some reason.

by APV on Mar 17, 2010 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

i’ve been saying Ron-Done as well.

by Brick. on Mar 17, 2010 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

With “Done” rhyming with “bone” and “stone” correct?

by dgcambridge on Mar 17, 2010 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

yes. sorry, not Ron-Dun

by Brick. on Mar 17, 2010 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I say Ron-dun because I like how it sounds, but I know it is incorrect.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 17, 2010 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

So it’s Ron-Done rhyming with stone and not Rond-dun? I always pronounced it ron-dun as well.

by JP_Frost on Mar 17, 2010 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Wait…I chose poor phonological spellings. I mean I think it should probably be pronounced Rone-Done as in Bone-Stone. I pronounce it Ron-Done as in Don-Stone.

by APV on Mar 17, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

As if Hoynes is going to get it just right?

by Jay on Mar 17, 2010 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Ha. But we’ve heard enough minor league announcers to know that it’s what they use. We just don’t know how to write it. Everyone to skype!

by dgcambridge on Mar 17, 2010 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, you guys suck at this.

by Jay on Mar 17, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

It would have to be Hay-Ahn-Mar.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 17, 2010 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

i’ve heard jzawn-mar

by Brick. on Mar 17, 2010 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, he’s not French.

by Jay on Mar 17, 2010 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

This is correct, but kind of overly correct. The pronunciation is on the second syllable, hay-AHN-mar, so in normal speech at regular speed, it ends up being more like hehYAHN-mar.

Rondon is roan-DOAN. That’s standard phonetics, and that’s how Manny Acta says it.

by Jay on Mar 17, 2010 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Doesn’t matter anyway, as both these guys will be so awesome as to spontaneously generate awesome LGT nicknames.

by FredOx on Mar 17, 2010 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Perfect Gomez

Rondondondon

by Jay on Mar 17, 2010 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea, I didn’t bother to include where the stress lies, but in my head it was on that syllable.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 17, 2010 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I think we go through this every year, but if I recall correctly that story is wrong.

I think its been a while. It was due.

by dgcambridge on Mar 17, 2010 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough. Lesson learned.

Welcome back, Sandy! ATALECG...

by USSChoo on Mar 17, 2010 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I can understand the story being relayed pre-2007. I looked the other way in 2008. I just don’t want another story about the h in his name showing up this season. Surely there is something that is most interesting about Jhonny than his name. Maybe something about him hitting homeruns.

/facepalm

by This Girl on Mar 17, 2010 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s where you wrong. Have you ever listened to the lack of excitement in his voice when he speaks? There is nothing more interesting about him than the placement of the H in his name.

Welcome back, Sandy! ATALECG...
