I'm sure this will be a depressing story to follow.

That’s a shame. His pain must be immense, but he’ll run out of chances in baseball if he doesn’t come to grips with it. It could very well be over for the guy. He’s not so young anymore.
I am 99.9999% sure that he’ll get another chance, this year. If he was a cat, I would say he’s only on life #5.

He’s got to really want it. I’ve gone out on a limb already in assuming that he doesn’t right now; I ‘ll wait until more comes out, but I don’t believe that Nats line that this was strictly about baseball.
Why did their GM find it necessary to add that they’ll be more “cohesive” if it was just about baseball, you know?
I’ve always been a fan of Dukes and held out hope he could put his personal issues aside. Dude is just too talented to be throwing it all away like this. I’d really like to take a flier on him, but we have enough outfielders already.
Well god knows what he’ll do if he doesn’t play baseball at all. Like I said, he just doesn’t make sense for us at the moment, but if he did, I’d try to do everything possible to keep him on the right path, even if it means hiring someone he trusts or looks up to to keep an eye on him (except Albert Belle of course).
The Nats are saying this is purely a baseball move, not related to anything off the field. If so… bad call, right? Really odd. Minimum wage player with a ton of raw talent at least has trade value.

You’d think so. Perhaps they asked around, and any potential return wasn’t worth the opportunity to “send a message.” I have no idea.

Sign him to a minor league deal, let him tear up C-Bus, then trade his a**.
... Paul Hoynes is a really great guy ...
i’d be fine with this. i don’t want him blocking crowe.

Maybe one day we’ll look back on this and say, “Well, what did you expect? This was the organization that not even Manny Acta could suceed in.”

This is kind of funny because I remember when Bowden acquired Dukes and Lastings Milledge, the moves were heralded by many fananalysts. (am I using this right?) It was thought that they were acquired on the cheap and that they both had great careers ahead of them based on both their past statistical performances and physical tools. Now, both have left the organization, without much in return for Milledge and nothing in return for Dukes.
Looking back, I still think the moves were probably worth it as neither team gave up much, but I think the fananalysts failed to properly account for their seemingly apparent makeup deficiencies. This isn’t to say that sometimes a guy can’t get unfairly tagged with this or that it isn’t overvalued by others, I just think it isn’t given as much attention as it should by some fananalysts.
