  • Strong defender.
  • Decent walk and contact rates for a backup infielder.
  • No power of course.

From deep down in the system, Tony has this amidst his notes today:

Position Change: 2008 14th round draft pick Carlos Moncrief initially signed with the Indians as a pitcher, a position he played the last two years. He was raw, but had huge upside because of his plus arm strength and high-90s fastball. However, when he was drafted he was also a highly regarded outfielder with a great arm and powerful bat, and apparently the Indians may have decided to move on from his development path as a pitcher to a new path in the outfield. While not confirmed as of this writing if he is indeed now a full time outfielder, he is listed as an outfielder on their roster sheet.

by dgcambridge on Mar 17, 2010 3:49 PM EDT reply actions

Carlos Moncrief at a home run derby competition in Mississippi in 2006 (he won with 25 homers, including a 500-footer).

I always liked his name and hoped he would be good

by APV on Mar 17, 2010 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I randomly selected him and some fat pitcher as my sleeper prospects after the draft. I would feel pretty uselessly good about myself if that happened. The fat pitcher’s name sounded like Fonzie.

by dgcambridge on Mar 17, 2010 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep, lets see how long he can go here. I really want him to do well, but he really seems to struggle out there sometimes. I don’t know if its talent, mechanics, or between his ears.

Another positive in his start so far — 4 groundouts, no flyouts.

by JP_Frost on Mar 17, 2010 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

perhaps he’s getting a little more downward action on the fastball today. I know the few times I was able to see him last year, his fast ball straightened up and he began giving up the fly balls and homers.

I like the football to show that the hat is functional, yet there couldn’t be a faker looking picture of a guy holding a football.

I actually just watched a few minutes of an All in the Family episode a few days ago. This might not seem coincidental, but it is a show from 42 years ago, and TV Land is too busy showing Rosanne to show it regularly.

It was a slow day at work.

Wegz had a bunch of hard hit balls

by APV on Mar 18, 2010 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions

I was fantasizing about the Wegz breakout last night. I want that so badly.

by afh4 on Mar 18, 2010 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Although Weglarz first hit was actually a groundout.

by afh4 on Mar 18, 2010 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

But it was a hard grounder

by APV on Mar 18, 2010 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not sure if this is sarcasm or not but it was a cue shot that rolled slowly and the 3B waited for it to go foul. It did not, everyone was safe.

by afh4 on Mar 18, 2010 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

But the ball, it was hard

by APV on Mar 18, 2010 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I can’t believe nobody commented on the reds guy in the booth, after Choo went oppo for a single in the first, asking if Choo was a similar player to Ichiro, with all of the inappropriate implications present.

by afh4 on Mar 18, 2010 12:15 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Pino’s out of options right?

by supermarioelia on Mar 18, 2010 12:23 AM EDT reply actions

Didn’t he clear waivers during the Rule 5 Draft?

by JRontherim on Mar 18, 2010 12:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Pino hasn’t even begun to use up his options. He’s never been on the 40-man.

He may well still have an option left for 2013.

by Jay on Mar 18, 2010 1:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Hmm, not sure why I thought that. I’m drawing a blank, what was the big issue when we picked him up for Pavano? That they wouldn’t put him on the 40-man?

by supermarioelia on Mar 18, 2010 8:17 AM EDT up reply actions

(they being the twins)

by supermarioelia on Mar 18, 2010 8:18 AM EDT up reply actions

He was exposed to the rule 5 and not taken. It was a 40-man issue with Pino.

by APV on Mar 18, 2010 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions

that they’d either have to roster him or expose him. we exposed him and no one bit

by Brick. on Mar 18, 2010 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

But we did lose Chuck Lofgren which reflects again the Indians total disregard and disrespect for guys that have put in their time. We will never get Lofgren back it was obvious he was going to be taken he is destined for stardom.

/Nosco.

God I hate Rule 5 complaining.

by afh4 on Mar 18, 2010 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions

didn’t nosco rail on the chiz pick?

by Brick. on Mar 18, 2010 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Nosco specializes in complaining about all the aspects of baseball that fans have no business complaining about because they require such intimate insider knowledge: HS/College/Marginal prospect evaluation and valuation, namely. Yes, he hated the Chiz pick b/c it jumped the BA mock draft line.

by afh4 on Mar 18, 2010 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Ironically, the first time I had ever heard of Bosco was when he was railing on the Chiz pick, so he will forever be known to me as the guy that hated when the Indians drafted Chiz.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 18, 2010 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Totally appropriate. In a way, you have to give Swerbs credit for the Chiz pick, because in a way, Swerbs fired Nosco for railing against it.

by Jay on Mar 18, 2010 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s actually a perfect example of what was being discussed the other day in that fanshot with our random prospect ranking. Unless you have actually seen these guys play, then it really doesn’t help much to make a list prior to any of them being drafted.
