Hoynes actually gets some good info from Acta on plans for fixing Carmona. Also, the lineups from today's intrasquad game.

Today’s brief intrasquad game was mainly populated by fringe guys, but some positions of note:

CF – Michael Brantley
SS – Jason Donald
CF – Brian Bixler
3B – Andy Marte

as an aside, where the hell did the formatting guide go? i can no longer remember how to post links and blockquotes.

It’s under POST A NEW COMMENT at the bottom of the page — on the right side, in between the Subject and Message boxes. Click on “Show Formatting Guide” and the guide appears under the Message box — you may have to scroll down to see it once it pops up. It doesn’t appear in a “reply” comment.

odd that i can no longer see it on my work computer, but if i click the blank space where you indicated, it shows up. thanks.

thread hijack via castro

(though the article actually contains some marson comments on fausto)

“I’ll tell you who I like a lot: [Yohan] Pino,” Marson added, referring to a non-roster 26-year-old right-hander acquired from the Twins last August in the Carl Pavano deal. “Good athlete, throws strikes with a bunch of different pitches. I think he’s going to be a sleeper.”

by emil minty on Mar 3, 2010 12:30 PM EST reply actions

LOVE IT. It would be so helpful if someone like that could sneak in and solidify a rotation spot. This is the guy.

by dgcambridge on Mar 3, 2010 12:40 PM EST up reply actions

my impression from the talk last year is that he profiled more as a peculiarly effective roogy. looking now at his cumulative splits from the minors, he overall numbers indicate he’s more effective against righties, but apparently doesn’t have any trouble striking out lefties (8.12 k/9 vs LH, 8.52 k/8 vs RH).

understanding that some pitchers have natural babip rates higher or lower than the league norm (less so than batters, i understand), has anyone ever looked at the phenomenon of natural babip split differential? am i even making sense?

by emil minty on Mar 3, 2010 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

I think he has an outside shot at a rotation spot. Talbot I think still has the advantage though.

by JP_Frost on Mar 3, 2010 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

Right, right, certainly the advantage at the beginning.

Of course, the worry isn’t that we’ll have to too many decent starters, but too few. Put another way – the question with someone lilke Pino is “Can he be a good starter?”, not whether he’ll get blocked.

by dgcambridge on Mar 3, 2010 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

I think we need to look at Pino claiming a spot later in the season; possibly Westbrook’s spot, for example.

Speaking of this, I’ll be in Goodyear this weekend. I’ll be with my mom, so I’m not likely to have a lot of time for making in-jokes about Wes Hodges, but if anyone will also be there and would like to shake hands, let me know.

by afh4 on Mar 3, 2010 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

Andrew, I’ll be there the following weekend, so sorry to not meet the face and hand (awkward..) behind so many a post and commentary. Have a great time.

Is it appropriate to set up some sort of Goodyear ST visiting schedule for any of our community who may want to meet and greet? Nothing fancy, just a post where those who are going can make whatever arrangements they want to share a beer or whatever.

by JimmyAB on Mar 3, 2010 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

I think any kind of fanshot to that effect would be fine and, if need be, we can reup to keep it near the top. If you were super ambitious, said fanshot could link to a google calendar people could add themselves to. That might be a bit much, though.

Enjoy your visit. It’ll be my first time in Goodyear. I’m curious to see how it is; I really liked Winter Haven when I was there two years ago.

by afh4 on Mar 3, 2010 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

Goodyear is in the middle of nowhere. The stadium is pleasant, though. Get ready for strip mall and vacant lot surroundings.

by APV on Mar 3, 2010 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

Well, Winter Haven is a strip mall, so there’s that.

You should be able to pick up some new meth-head sunglasses.

by fwembt on Mar 4, 2010 12:22 AM EST up reply actions

Ok. I’ll put something up tonight or tomorrow unless someone else really wants to do something with a calendar and all that.

I’ve been to both Winter Haven (‘06) and Goodyear (’09) and enjoyed both. The new park and facilities are much nicer all around but there isn’t all that much else right in the vicinity.

Remember to go to the concessions behind the scoreboard and get one of these delicacies. And at least 2 beers (Fat Tire recommended) to wash it down.

Last year there was a real fan access complaint at Goodyear. Apparently the situation is vastly improved this year.

Are the spring training sunglasses making the trip too?

by supermarioelia on Mar 3, 2010 6:42 PM EST up reply actions

I’ve actually been wearing a pair of knock-off ray bans lately but I will dig the ‘blockers out for the trip. I’m also taking a flip video camera I think and I want to get an exclusive with Sowers where I just berate him.

I am very nervous that any recap I write will be judged harshly in light of the previous one.

by afh4 on Mar 4, 2010 11:35 AM EST up reply actions

Be careful mocking Sowers during spring training. Remember, he didn’t take too kindly to my comments about his skinny legs in 2008.

All from Hoynes twitter.

Would it be so hard for them to do a box score instead of this ridiculous listing of who was 2-2 with a double?

by afh4 on Mar 3, 2010 5:43 PM EST up reply actions

I think once “official” exhibition games begin we will get boxscores

by APV on Mar 3, 2010 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

by afh4 on Mar 3, 2010 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

My reactions to his tweets were mixed.

#Indians 3B prospect Lonnie Chisenhall hit a long homer to CF off Fausto Carmona in the bottom of the first inning in an intrasquad game.

“YES, go Lonnie! Oh, it was off Fausto? Come on.”

#Indians RHP Carlos Carrasco, who created a lot of HRs in September, gave up another one to Andy Marte in the 2nd inning.

“Not good… All right Marte!”

I’d rather see the pitchers doing well, so this is mostly bad news for me.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 4, 2010 9:32 AM EST up reply actions

Here’s the lead from the recap of last year’s intrasquad opener:

Trevor Crowe and Josh Barfield homered to lead the home Indians past the visiting Indians, 8-6, Tuesday in a five-inning intrasquad game at Goodyear Ballpark.
And two years ago:
Ben Francisco singled twice, doubled, stole two bases and drove in a run. In the sixth, he doubled and came around to score the winning run on a double play grounder.
My general impression is that it’s easier to hit a baseball on the first day than it is to pitch one.

by FredOx on Mar 4, 2010 10:33 AM EST up reply actions

Carlos Carrasco is a one-man slugging stimulus package, providing the people with home runs saved or “created.”
