I’m officially way over-hoping this season. Just getting that out there. There is nothing rational about it.
Same here. And it’s really annoying because I can’t defend my optimism to anyone.

Easy. Wesbrook, Hafner, Sizemore, Peralta, Carmona, Wood, Perez-L all bounce back to their healthy career peaks.
Cabrera and Choo become bonafide All Stars.
LaPorta, Brantley, Perez, Masterson, Laffey, and Valbuena take the next step and become league-average-for-their-position contributors.
Carlos Santana has incredible breakout after being called up in July.
Jordan Brown inexplicably is up in a key situation in mid-October. And hits a game-winning homerun off C.C., ruining his perfect game in the 9th in a 0-0 game. Mitch Talbot wins ALCS MVP.
I LOVE SPRING!

They are all very much on the White Sox bandwagon. Which I guess describes most people at this point.

Hafner sounded like he worked a nice ab facing nice stuff
by Brick. on Mar 29, 2010 10:21 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
He’s saying some really good things. Which is not special, I know. But last spring, having interviewed him, I can tell you that everything he said was so freaking anodyne that it was like he was timid with the very thought of optimism. Now he’s saying specific things like, “I’ll murder the ball with two strikes,” and “I’ll stop swinging at stupid stuff on the first pitch,” and “I eat worn leather shoes for lunch for no reason.”

I remember when I used to have issues streaming and gamethreading from my computer. Now I have no problem on my phone.
by Brick. on Mar 29, 2010 10:25 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
It’s actually got me a little down on the iPad. Not sure how well SBN will work on it. Rather sure that I won’t be able to stream video (or even audio) on it while game threading.
Audio + mobile lgt + wifi connect on BB storm 2 no problem.

no, it’s more like the old days where you have to refresh, but with no way to know which comments are new.
Yeah that’s how it is on the iPhone, I just wasn’t sure if it was different on a BB. I find it too annoying to deal with on a regular basis.

Also, in case anyone is making plans for these things, I’m gonna catch games in Pittsburgh and Baltimore this year. I am, however, gonna catch the Clippers when they come to Scranton. I’ll try to take some good pictures for the LGT crew.
Welcome back, Sandy! ATALECG...
I’m assuming the one on May 15th, possibly the 16th, too. We haven’t yet worked out the details. I’m in charge of baseball activities and the girlfriend is responsible for all other activities within the city, so as soon as we hammer out what else we’re gonna do I’ll know more.
Welcome back, Sandy! ATALECG...
So…guys I don’t care about on the 40-man roster:
Ambriz
J Lewis
Reyes
Sowers
Hernandez
Hodges
Brown
Crowe
Reyes not on, but otherwise, pretty much. That said I also wouldn’t care about kearns or grudz or wright, so it becomes comparative
by Brick. on Mar 29, 2010 10:49 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I think I care more about Hernandez than Grudz. And more about kearns than brown or hodges. And more about Wright than ambriz.
... Paul Hoynes is a really great guy ...
I had some hopes for Reyes, but those were lost in the plethora of arms we got last summer. Now I see him simply as added depth (that’s pretty generic).
The only other one that I disagree with is J Lewis.
I just wanted to believe.
That’s what I’m afraid of happening. I just have visions of him finding success right after he leaves the club. I’m not worried about that with Crowe, for example.
I just wanted to believe.
I haven’t heard of most of those guys

by Brick. on Mar 30, 2010 9:11 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
It’d be nice if Shap had given us a glimmer of hope in assembling a pen. Just because we’re throwing 2010 doesn’t mean he couldn’t have at least made a pseudo-effort.

The bullpen seems solid enough. I’m expecting a big bounce back season from Rafael and I think Sipp will be very good.

I disagree with every aspect of this post. What are you basing any of that on?
by supermarioelia on Mar 30, 2010 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Hey, I’m buying the hype on Carmona, Pronk, Talbot, Laffey, Westbrook, Kearns, Marte….and pretty much anyone on the Tribe with a pulse. Hell maybe even Perez.
But I have zero faith in Tony Sipp.
by supermarioelia on Mar 31, 2010 12:49 AM EDT up reply actions
I love Sipp, but based on how he has performed this spring, I won’t be surprised if he’s in Columbus by May.
When did people start taking spring training numbers this seriously? I feel like I missed something.
LGT's resident moderate Yankee hating fan.
Damn it, I just read a comment about this yesterday from a baseball writer. Something like, I’ve come to realize the only spring statistics that matter are the ones that confirm my own bias.
Steel Nick
6 Cabrera, 8 Sizemore, 9 Choo, DH Hafner, 5 Peralta, 7 Brantley, 3 Marte, 4 Valbuena, 2 Marson. RHP Talbot
brantley again. kearns 4th OF, designate crowe?
I am fine designating Crowe. If we need someone to fill his role we can temporarily roster Jose Constanza and getter better defense and more speed.
Gotta go Ann Taylor LOFT. Cheaper, and actually less-stuffy looking fashions. But it’s hit or miss.

I’m kind of jealous you males are getting ads like that. Mine are just about how a mom discovered the shocking benefits of acai berries or whatever, because you know, all advertising targeted at women must start off by implying that they are in serious need of X faddy weight-loss thingamajig.

i’m not convinced. what does peter gammons think?

I actually heard an explanation for this that makes sense, at least to me. It comes from the instinctive mating strategy of men and women. Men want to spread their seed far and wide. Physical attractiveness is a sign of good genes, so men instinctively care about physical appearance and women are obsessed with how they look.
Women on the other hand want to find a good provider for their more limited number of offspring. Men are therefore obsessed with material success. They don’t seem to give a damn about how they look, or have an unrealistically optimistic body image.
With the regular season right around the corner, I want to throw another name into the hat for the LGT theme song of 2010.
Choo would dispute that this is the future of pop music.

Well, I took Hochevar as my number one starter. Hopefully he makes good on his history.

Watch this be the season that Mark Reynolds only strikes out 195 times, therefore killing my strikeout numbers.

His K rate has been increasing as they’ve been feeding him more sliders, so I think you’re good.

So Talbot gives up 5 runs….now pitched 2 scoreless….
I know there’s a joke about bipolar disorder and the Indians rotation somewhere….
Talbot: 36 pitches in the 1st (20k/16b); 13 in 2nd (11/2); 7 in 3rd (3/4); 9 in 4th (6/3). The home run came after he had thrown six straight balls. KC helping him out, averaging less than 3 pitches per PA, with a first pitch GIDP in there.
by YoDaddyWags on Mar 30, 2010 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions
I was just about to post that from how it looks on the gameday link on MLB.com, all Talbot is throwing is fastball/cutters and a change up and slider very rarely.
5 outs on changeups, 4 on FB, 2 on sliders, 1 on a cutter, plus a sac bunt, and a GIDP that came on a pitch Gameday missed. FBs around 92, mostly. Also! KC averaging 3.2 pitches per PA through 5.
by YoDaddyWags on Mar 30, 2010 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions
I like how KC doesn’t rate its own game thread. Anyway, Kearns, batting for Boras, first-pitch 2B leading off the 9th.
Valbuena, with bags juiced, bucks Tribe deep count tendencies to tap back to P on first offering. Ballgame!
Valbuena, fight of my Tribe, lyre of my Hoynes. My 2nd base prole. Val-bue-na: the tap of the bat on the tip of the pitch to send a tapper to the pitcher for three. Lo: Ball game.
