Sowers clears waivers, gets sent to Columbus
40-man spot needed for Grudz per Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.
UPDATE: Among many other roster updates, Castrovince reports that Sowers has already cleared waivers and has been removed from the 40-man. Original link preserved above. [Jay]

I hope it’s the end of drafting crafty soft-tossers way too early.

But probably not the end of this beaten dead horse.

i actually think the injury makes it more likely. there has to be some teams with a 40-man spot that take a flier on a potential #5 for in a month. claim, DL, rehab, try, then waive if it doesn’t work out.
That July 28th game was pretty epic as it turns out. Game thread:
I can’t believe it, but I’m excited about an Indians game. Two young promising pitchers, the long-awaited return of Eduardo Perez, Shin-Soo Choo’s debut, and the first start for Andy Marte as an Indian.
Aaron Boone’s still around, but he’ll be using his veteran presence from the bench. Whatever the circumstances, two of the three Filler B’s are out in two days; that’s what I call progress.
And the next day in a post entitled The Future is Now
“Choo and Marte in the lineup, with Sowers pitching. The future is tonight!”
That was the first entry in last night’s Game Thread, posted by Mark. I think we all shared his sense of breathlessness and relief, anticipating a new wave of talented young players taking the field at the Jake. Starting last night, Indians games begin to feel like an extremely long Spring Training for the 2007 season. The relief comes from the sudden sense that the 2006 season is no longer actually happening.
(I actually missed all the fun. All I did was watch Adam Miller more or less dominate the Yankees’ farm team in Trenton, in a performance that was both conventionally gemmy — 1 ER over 7.2 IP — and peripheralicious — 11 K’s and one walk. More about that game in a Diary.)
Baseball is a tough mistress
Don’t worry, I had an post on the old blog that defended the Indians picking Sowers over Jered Weaver.
I’m mostly bummed that “peripheralicious” never caught on. Just too much effort to type, I guess.

Last year he bacame my daughter’s second favorite Indian (after Grady) when he replied to a question about how he had been so effective in that start by saying “I just try to keep it simple. I could elaborate, but that would be ironic.”
Logo’s last appearance, March 7:
I’ll be at the game tomorrow with my sister… E-mail me if anyone is planning on going and would like to meet up.
Last time i was at an ST game, it was 1982. A thousand degrees. Left early and headed to a bar; wound up sitting next to Eddie Matthews. He’d left early, too. Now I know why.
It’s true. Colin, his sister and I and their mother were all at Sowers last start against the Brewers. (Yes we did also see the green man.) His sister graduated from Oberlin in 2007 and is working in Tucson. She’s become a bit of a tribe fan too.
Colin has been pretty busy lately. He’s trying to submit an article to a journal for publication and the deadline is pretty soon. I’m sure he’ll be back after that.
A funny thing happened on the way to the game Monday night. Walking out of the motel room my wife tripped and did a face plant into the metal fence that is around the pool. We ended up sitting in an urgent care facility waiting to have the cut on her nose glued closed instead of going to the game. Turns out we didn’t miss much of a game anyway.
I’m kind of disappointed that we didn’t give him an opportunity as a long man. But with our crush of arms into our system, it simply became a numbers game. I think he can still find success in the bullpen in a long man role. He has the deceptiveness to get major league hitters out for 3-4 innings at a time. He just doesn’t have the secondary stuff to get him past that point.
Given that the only split he has that’s worth a damn is first time through the order, I wonder why he never was tried in relief.
His one glorious relief outing. Also Rundle’s one glorious 2009 appearance.

Today’s lineup:
6-Cabrera, 8-Sizemore, 9-Choo, DH-Hafner, 5-Peralta, 3-LaPorta, 7-Kearns, 4-Hernandez, 2-Espino, LHP Huff.
Also, Hoynes tweets that Sowers says he’ll know shortly if he has cleared waivers. Castro tweets that the Indians will announce roster decisions shortly.
Off-topic, but anybody see the beginning of the Jackasses vs. Bunters game? Denard Span hit his mom in the chest with a line drive.
I saw some of the aftermath. Didn’t know it was his mom….

Span fouled a ball into the stands, hit a lady in the chest. Turns out it was dear old mom

She was down the line, just beyond the screen. Span ran to her immediately, making it obvious that it was someone he knew. At the time, all the ESPN guys knew was that the seat was right next to the Twins dugout and she had on a Span jersey. She was examined and returned to her seat in the bottom of the inning.
Update from Castro:
UPDATE: Here’s what I know so far…
Michael Brantley made the team. He’ll be the starting left fielder.
Jensen Lewis made the bullpen.
Reliever Saul Rivera (a non-roster invitee) did not make the bullpen. He’ll head to Columbus. He has an out in his contract in mid-May, if he’s not with the big league club.
Wyatt Toregas and Chris Gimenez both got the axe. No surprises there, though Toregas did have a strong camp. This means that Lou Marson is the starting catcher, as was anticipated all along.
Now the question is whether there is space for him in the Columbus rotation. Carrasco, Rondon, Gomez, Pino, Lewis, Sowers…
Yeah, the only good that can come out of keeping him on the roster is if he’s trained to be a long man. When/if Laffey has to become an SP again, bring Sowers up and see what happens.
