Does a Wood trade make too much sense to happen here?

Oooohhh. I hadn’t considered that.
I think you feel them out for desperation and if they’re not at DefCon 4 (which they won’t be because they’re the Twins and no one in Minnesota ever gets worked up) then you wait a couple of months, hoping that Neshek and Crain can’t do the job and Wood drives his vale up.
The Twins have a lot of players that the Indians would love to have. Ben Revere’s the one to dream on (I don’t really know how the Twins value you young players; do they ever trade prospects?) but more realistically I think somebody like Danny Valencia would be a decent fit as a stopgap/insurance to Chisenhall or one of the many arms or maybe a lesser OF, like Angel Morales.
I probably wouldn’t be as jazzed on this except that I like the Twins system a lot.
The Twins have not behaved to form this offseason which may be related to the opening of their new park and wooing of Mauer. It wouldn’t surprise me if they took Wood off of our hands before the start of the season.
The Twins have a deep bullpen. I don’t think they’ll acquire a closer, but if they do I would expect it to be near the trading deadline. I think they’ll use some of their depth to cover the loss. They still have Guerrier, Mijares, Rauch, and Neshek. Even Liriano.

I disagree. If there ever was a season for the Twins to act differently, this would be it. I think it’d be a mistake to underestimate the effect of the new park on the team (and their spending habits). I could easily see them taking Wood on, but only if Rauch doesn’t pan out. So, if I was a betting man, I’d say that come late June (early July) the Twinkies might come calling. And while I would value the new prospects from their system – part of me is leary of trading inter-division. Its just bad karma that will somehow turn around a bite you eventually.
I also am worried about having too many prospects. I’d like to see how the current batch sorts themselves out a bit before we start adding more. I’m worried already that we’re close to blocking some people (at least developmentally) – especially our pitching. It is an excellent problem to have, but not one I’m eager to exasperate.
I just wanted to believe.
I say we take any inexpensive minor leaguer with a pulse. Dumping the balance of the Wood contract would be reward enough.
Preface: If there’s a baseball trade that makes sense for Kerry Wood, I’m all for it. With that being said:
If he’s throwing really well and it appears the starting rotation has taken shape for 2011, it may be worthwhile to hang on to him if the only return is a pure dump. Yes, the salary relief will be useful. But the Indians have payroll flexibility in 2011. The $11M devoted to Jake in 2010 takes care of all internal 2011 raises to Grady, Choo, Asdrubal, Fausto, and Jhonny.
If Jhonny is on the way out, the Indians can use his earmarked salary, 7M, to grab a starter on a short deal. And if the team comes together so that the Indians want to keep Wood, spending an extra $7M on top of Peralta and Wood doesn’t seem impossible.
I can envision a scenario where the team is better with Wood still in the closer’s role in 2011. At that point, you’re looking at one year and $11M, less whatever return you could have obtained in a trade. If the return is negligible, well, then a one-year deal with a closer for $11M isn’t a horrible deal. And if he’s turned it around in 2010, you can always deal him mid- 2011.

As much as I want the Twins to make this move now, I think they will first try internal options and only trade for a closer (Wood) if the internal options don’t pan out. So I still think Wood wont be moved until June at the earliest.
Yeah, I don’t foresee them getting panicky until they see a few guys flame out.
How about this? Peralta has a decent start and the Indians ship Peralta and Wood to the Twins for Valencia (who can immediately play 3rd), and a couple of other pieces (maybe a guy like Kyle Gibson and a high upside kid)?
And, Twins fans driving by, please realize that I know I’m undervaluing some of your prospects. It’s only because I like them so much.
I more or less agree but I like the idea of getting Peralta’s immediate replacement in town so that the Indiana can just clear the whole payroll. And, if downgrading to Valencia means they take Wood’s whole deal, I’m
good with that.
I just assume Hicks and Revere aren’t moving for a guy like Wood. Though, with Span in town and if DY reemerges…

I just live with Marte. This pitching staff seriously needs defense. I’d prefer going all upside in a Peralta/Wood deal. Getting a marginal 3B is redundant when any guy the Indians acquire would be, ideally, a guy like Marte.
Isn’t that where Lonnie Chisenhall is going to play, though? I would guess the Indians hope Peralta has a good enough year to where they can trade him, and then go with Marte until Chisenhall is ready.
I think Chiz is realistically mid 2011 and I don’t know that the Indiana are ever going to just ‘go with Marte’ for any length of time. They’ve had the opportunty before and refused it. A marginal 3b (and Valencia is liked better than that by many) allows Peralta to be moved and can then be moved himself if Chiz is all we hope.

Mijares seems like he is good, but I think this is a pretty significant blow to MIN. I see a lot of unfavorable regression to the mean happening with their bullpen from last year, and they don’t have a ton of interesting bullpen arms in the upper minors (Delaney, Burnett?)
I see this situation as a good thing for the division (post ‘hate injuries’ disclaimer here). It’s not like one team is going to thump the collective heads of the rest. This brings the Twins back closer to the slog where we reside and it’ll be up to the tribe to take advantage. I’m all for roasting some twinkie right now.
Castro on a potential Wood deal:
Question – when a player such as Nathan goes down for the year (and the injury is not career ending), does insurance pick up any of the player’s salary?
(a) Not as much as it used to, and (b) only if the club chose to purchase insurance.

I can’t imagine anything would happen early, with the Twins being in the division. Yeah, we all know that the possibility of contending is unlikely, but you don’t outright tell your team that by trading your closer to the team in the division that is the favorite. This isn’t a simulation game.
In addition, I would expect the Twins to look at internal alternatives and only explore the trade market if they feel they absolutely have to. Check back in June.
