Rockies' catcher Miguel Olivo passes kidney stone, keeps playing
I've never had a kidney stone, but knowing people who've passed them, I'm gobsmacked that he was playing while the stone was moving.

And if they keep him down until the Braves are good again, the Braves might never be good again. I don’t get all the animus directed at the Braves for bringing up one of the most exciting players in our lifetime when he is clearly ready. You go ahead and root for GMs to make wise fiscal decisions. I’ll enjoy the game of baseball.
I agree, it’s awesome for baseball. If it were my team, though, I’d be steamed.
I will not ever apologize for being protective of my team’s payroll dollars. Those dollars are finite, and it’s only a fool who thinks that they aren’t, or that it doesn’t matter.
I don’t know the state of the Braves attendance, but I’m sure they are making real extra dollars off of ticket and jersey sales.
Practicing my left-handed swing as I type. By next week I'll be able to hit Masterson and Smith.
To the tune of tens of millions of dollars? In the midst of like a 10 game losing streak or whatever?
Umm. No.
Not to mention … net of what they would have made whenever they brought him up?
I believe Heyward is going to fall to earth, possibly very hard. I could be wrong, but I don’t think I am. If he’s really this good at age 20, he’s a Hall of Famer.
Having said that, he’s also a guy who has played all of 47 games in Double-A and three games — three games — in Triple-A. He should have been held back until June, all right — June 2011.
I hope they’re selling a lot of jerseys, then. This applies equally to the (non-us) portion of the fanbase arguing that the Indians would make up the lost salary dollars in ticket sales by calling up Santana early.
2009 (12 Games) 298,514 2010 (12 Games) 347,995 Increase 49,481 Season Pace 333,997 x avg ticket price $5.7 million

I haven’t seen him play, but isn’t it a bit early to assert this?
the better the financial decisions, the more you get to enjoy baseball. if waiting two months to bring him up means an extra year of him on the back end, as an example, even more in his prime, then that’s a trade i make every time – at the cost of a little patience.
Also, let’s remember that the Braves can/will man-up and offer large contracts occasionally. It’s not a 100% certainty that he walks, a la Grady. (tear)
I think Jay has pretty explicitly covered the fact that Grady’s departure is not a foregone conclusion

I think you’re wrong about the Braves and large contracts. I think they’re a mid-market team at best in the post-TBS era, and their recent struggles have been directly related to their struggle to recognize and adjust to that.

And with his next HR, Austin Kearns will tie Fermin, Tom Veryzer, Jamey Carroll, Josh Barfield and both Nixons on the Career HR as an Indian list.
