Thoughts.
1. I can’t tell if this year’s C+ relief prospects are any more promising than last year’s — Hermann, Smith, Wright, Tomlin, et al. — but they all seem to be a little bit closer, and there appear to be more of them.
2. Happy to see Graham and Putnam starting. For whatever reason, they both strike me as the kind of pitcher that just needs the innings to iron things out, even if their future’s in the ’pen.
3. That said, I expect the H is O for all the Akron starters. That Kinston rotation is loaded for bear.
4. Put up or shut up year for the older outfield prospects like John “Jon Drennan” Drennen, and to a lesser extent Fedroff. To me, the upper levels of our outfield depth look like Wegz and everybody else, so there’s nobody blocking them until Cleveland. You want some respect, John? Out-hit Shelley Duncan.
5. Is Jordan Henry our best legit center field prospect? Sub-question: Is Tim Fedroff a center fielder?
6. We’ve mentioned it before, but there’s a lot of upward mobility potential for anybody hitting right-handed in this system. Looking at you, Fedroff, Rivero, Phelps, Abreu, Kipnis, Bellows.
7. Seems like a really big year for Rivero, too. He’s still plenty young — 1988, only half a year older than Chiz — but I think it would be great to see him really own AA this season. Speaking of Chisenhall, if he has another year like last, ish’s abowdda git real.
8. Mildly interesting things I’ll be watching this season: Austin Adams as a starter, Carlos Moncrief as an outfielder (hello, B.A. Indian’s Best Outfield Arm 2011!), Trey Haley with the training wheels supposedly off, the comeback trail of Rob Bryson, the television series Chuck.
9. IA2k9 “New Blood” Latin American signees starting to peek their heads up: Carlos Santana’s eventual replacement Alex Monsalve and didn’t-make-the-list-because-of-WALL-E-Bryan-but-in-retrospect-probably-should-have infielder Giovanny Urshella.
10. Anybody want to get a pool started on the week that a minor league starter first gets called up? Third week of May? How about first starter to get the call? I’m going dark horse: Gomez.

I’m going dark horse: Gomez.
He’s already on the 40-man, so he is in play. Of course so are Rondon and Carrasco.
Carrasco obviously is the #6 starter now that Sowers is off the roster.
Then again, these things change quickly. If he struggles while Rondon soars, it’ll flip.

I’m wondering if Rondon is a guy that gets spun into the bullpen….
….just a thought. Considering that 99% of scouting reports for pitchers include the “could move to the bullpen” line I wonder if that could actually be in the cards sooner than later for Rondon…and Jeanmar Gomez.
Too soon for both. More likely with Gomez than Rondon, but possible for both.

I guess I forgot about Yohan Pino before both. I certainly want to see Rondon continue being developed as a starter.
I just get the impression sometimes reading Tony’s site, and reading online that every pitcher ever born is simply destined to move to the pen so their “stuff plays up better”
Almost every pitcher is more likely to succeed in the bullpen rather than in the rotation. It’s a truism. Starting is harder.
This is a little different than it is for hitters, in that a hitter who isn’t quite good enough may not have the requisite skills to be a logical bench player.

I’m, perhaps absurdly, going to say the injury bug doesn’t hit this year’s rotation. June 5; Carrasco.
Rondon soon follows after the Westbrook trade.

I’ll be you a thousand dollars we use more than six starters before Westbrook is traded.

Doesn’t mean you wouldn’t bet on it. You are kind of known for being drunk.

You’re certainly right about there being little standing in the way of hitters who show any sign of being ready to advance.
Pitching, on the other hand, it gets crowded – 2 or 3 of the affiliates will piggyback starters just to get them the innings they deserve.
And I’ll go with Carrasco getting the first call.
No kidding? If I knew that, I’d completely forgotten. Man, we’re turning into the bargain basement Mets.

Fedroff also is a lefty (and probably not a real center fielder).

After Brantley, sure.

I think Brantley has to prove himself a little more defensively before we can consider him a legitimate long-term CF option. Beyond that we have no legit CF prospects. But we do have a variety of guys with interesting skills, not least of which is they all are apparently high quality defenders at the position.

If there’s one thing this organization has done prolifically, it’s produce major league center fielders. At one point, there were something like 10 full-time or platoon center fielders (or plus-defender corner guys) in the majors who had all come through the Indians system. Lofton, Sizemore, Crisp, Bradley, Gutierrez, Taveras, Escobar, Francisco, Giles, Gerut …
