79-83, better than their Pythag.

Torn between 78-84 & 74-88. Hmmmm, lets go 76-86.

81-80. With one rained-out game that doesn’t get made up.

I took the over at 74.5 in Reno a couple of weeks ago. We will win at least 75.

by larzko on Apr 4, 2010 2:41 PM EDT reply actions

what odds were you given on that bet?

by APV on Apr 4, 2010 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

-120, $10 to win 8.35
Also:
5/1 to win division
75/1 to win pennant
150/1 Championship!

by larzko on Apr 4, 2010 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Damnit, I only got 125/1 odds on the championship.

by supermarioelia on Apr 5, 2010 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

I’ll go with 82-80 so as to not duplicate another one.

69-93.

I’m more pessimistic than usual. It is great to be back though.

I’ll take 86-76 since I’m an incurable optimist and everything else over .500 is already taken.

I’ve lost all of my pessimism since my buddy got back from Goodyear. Here it is: 88 and 74.

So the Royals win at least 92 games?

STBNL

by emd2k3 on Apr 5, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Don’t bring me back to reality just yet. I’m living my “Indians dominate all of baseball” fantasy right now. They’ll be time for sober judgement later.

82-80. Will have the same distinction with 2005 San Diego Padres as worst division winner ever.

by jayme on Apr 5, 2010 5:32 AM EDT reply actions

77-85. Pythag of 79-83.

Is this the whale section?

by sarcasmdave on Apr 5, 2010 9:56 AM EDT reply actions

You’d think the non-Wedge era could start with them actually outperforming their pythag.

STBNL

by emd2k3 on Apr 5, 2010 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Given the likely sorry state of our bullpen, it makes sense that the team will likely underperform its Pythag. Underperforming Pythag is not just a Wedge thing – lots of other managers have done it.

by woodsmeister on Apr 5, 2010 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

This is pretty much what I was thinking. If Wedge were still here, I’d say they underperform Pythag even more.

72-90. I echo others’ concerns about the pitching staff.

73 wins. Bad starting pitching. Bad pen, again.

by odradek on Apr 5, 2010 11:35 AM EDT reply actions

78-84 With a strong August/September push due to the contributions of CC & Huff in the rotation and Masterson in the pen.

Anything in life is possible, except for skiing through revolving doors.

by MooneysRebellion on Apr 5, 2010 1:04 PM EDT reply actions

Tough season to predict. Winning 86 wouldn’t surprise me, losing 93 wouldn’t surprise me. I’ll go with 82-80, pushed over .500 by a hot September. Fausto wins 14.

If you believe it's just a game, you're also probably wondering why Santa keeps skipping your house every year.

70-92, and I dare them to do better.

BLUE JAYS ON THE CLOCK WITH THE FIRST PICK IN THE 2011 MLB DRAFT

... Paul Hoynes is a really great guy ...

by westbrook on Apr 6, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

OK, I tabulated the results.

The LGT group-think predicts a 79-83 record.

mjmarble wins the crazy optimism award with 89-73

mjschaefer wins the steel-eyed pragmatist award with 69-93

nickjs21 and talonk share the soul of LGT award for predicting the same record as the community as a whole.

Winner receives a free hot dog, compliments of me, the next time we’re both at a baseball game together.

by NickFantana on Apr 11, 2010 9:53 PM EDT reply actions

So, “optimist” and “pragmatist” are now antonyms?

by Jay on Apr 12, 2010 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Only when you struggle with a limited vocabulary. Sorry.

by NickFantana on Apr 13, 2010 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s just funny, and maybe stereotypically Clevelandesque, for the most pessimistic view to be considered the “pragmatic” one.

Had someone else guessed 52 wins, would he have beaten out mjschaefer for the “steel-eyed pragmatist” award?

Seriously!

by Jay on Apr 13, 2010 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I think my personal perspective about 2010 doesn’t see much difference between pessismism and pragmatism. Of course, you’re right, this is also the default Clevelander position, especially about the Tribe.

But I honestly think in this case it had less to do with any of that and more to do with the fact that I wrote the original post very quickly and after I’d had three Celis Whites.
