Has Sizemore gone from very durable to injury prone in the last 2 years?

Is this in any way related to the Indians decision to not shut Grady down earlier last year?

by millionairesrow on May 19, 2010 4:57 PM EDT reply actions

It’s been a long day, it was the elbow last year. Ugh.

Ugh… only thing worse than Sizemore on the DL is calling up a Jackass to replace him.

Also, and more importantly, who just got the boot off the 40-man?

or was Cabrera moved to the 60-day DL?

ahhh…this appears to be what happened

by APV on May 19, 2010 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, and Grady was put on the 15 day DL right?

I made a vow back in March to turn around and walk out of the stadium if presented with a starting line-up that includes Kearns, Grudzielanek, Branyan & Duncan. This is not good.

No, not you. Your helmet!

by PatBordersHelmet on May 19, 2010 5:04 PM EDT reply actions

but the first three are 3 of our top 4 players

by APV on May 19, 2010 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I didn’t see that coming at all. Especially Kearns—who has shockingly become one of my favorite bats to see at the plate. So I assume Shelly Duncan is going to go 4-4 in his first appearance.

I’ve never left a game early, but I am a man of my word.

INDIANS (15-22): CF Crowe, 2B Grudzielanek, RF Choo, DH Hafner, LF Kearns, 1B Branyan, 3B Peralta, SS Donald, C Marson. RHP Justin Masterson (0-4, 5.92).

Per Castro, I’m safe as only three of the four horseman will be on the field at 7.05pm.

No, not you. Your helmet!

Seriously – that is a sad, sad lineup. Who would’ve thought it possible. Watch them put up 10 runs tonight.

I just want to believe.

They’re gonna need to with Masterson on the mound.

Just looking at this, so I’m posting it.

AAA numbers:

Duncan, 1380 PA, 172 BB, 269 K, 74 HE, .275/.370/.529
Branyan, 1399 PA, 173 BB, 470 K, 91 HR, .260/.357/.547

Seems like it would be a pretty good, cheap platoon for a major league team to use at 1b or DH.

Hoynes is an idiot. I’m not sure what he was told by his sources, but they most certainly didn’t involve calling the injury a “bone bruise”, and also telling him that Grady may need surgery. He’s a one-man game of telephone. Carroll was right to call him out on Twitter.

by supermarioelia on May 19, 2010 6:04 PM EDT reply actions

Castro is reporting the same.

by xrickx on May 19, 2010 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I generally never conjecture about the injury stuff, but I had a “deep” bone bruise before from a lacrosse game in high school and a.) it hurt like a mother for 2 months and I couldn’t move my arm for 2 weeks and b.) it is what it sounds: a bruise. Don’t understand where surgery comes in.

by joeee on May 19, 2010 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m happy to be corrected by the real doctors, but I believe severe bone contusions can involve surgical treatment either to relieve pressure or stimulate healing in the affected area. I think my brother had surgery on a bone contusion on his knee a few years back.

by APV on May 19, 2010 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

From the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons:

If there is a large hematoma that does not go away within several days, in some cases the doctor may drain it surgically to speed healing.

by APV on May 19, 2010 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s for a muscle contusion, not bone, I believe. Correct me if I’m wrong though,

by cozmeesah on May 19, 2010 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

nope – bone contusion

by APV on May 19, 2010 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I’m in over my head here since I’ve never seen a bone contusion that needed draining. I’ll happily defer to the AAOS haha.

Carroll was right to call him out on Twitter

Is Will Carroll a physician (specifically, an orthopedic surgeon)?

But he did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Is the implication here that Carroll is no authority, and is not to be believed when he delivers bad news about Grady? Because, as a medical reporter, he does what reporters are supposed to do: talk to professional sources. So Carroll presumably isn’t diagnosing this. He’s basing it on what he’s heard.

by odradek on May 20, 2010 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Twitter name “injuryexpert” says “Bone bruises don’t need surgery.” Sounds like a doc tawkin’.

by joeee on May 20, 2010 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I would say Carroll toes the line. He definitely will take something like Hoynes’ report and offer his own opinion on it, which, although he’s not a doctor, is based on the extensive research and reporting he’s done in sports medicine. He doesn’t just “report” what doctors say thought-he interprets, explains and speculates on medical procedures, all without an MD. It’s an interesting gig and there’s clearly some potential for overreaching.

by afh4 on May 20, 2010 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Sizemore’s injury a mystery? That’s just the way Soloff and the Department of Counterintelligence want it.
