haha, Peavy said to his teammates “We’ve got to beat up on these guys”

he was one of my favorite pitchers in baseball before he entered our division. I wish I had picked up Peavy but Porcello, Carpenter and Floyd are doing a heck of a job anchoring my rotation. Porcello even got me a balk the other day!

Charlie Morton is my favorite pitcher in baseball. And not just because I want to give him a hug and tell him it’ll be okay every time he takes the mound.
Meche and Burnett too. But OH NO! Brandon Wood is now on the DL and I’m out of DL spots. Apparently bad players are also more frequently injured.

I feel like Google’s suggested searches are a decent peek into our society. I feel like our society is on its last legs.
I was at a pool hall in Indiana over the weekend and someone put on a Taylor Swift song. That “SHE WEARS SHORT SHORTS AND I WEAR SWEATERS” one or whatever. I’m not sure how that song gets played at a pool hall.
How are these songs even making their way into pool hall jukeboxes? Shouldn’t it be nothing but George Thorogood and ZZ Top in there or something?

Updating my comment from last night. New Kinston 1b Chris Kerstan now 0 for 18 in his first games in Carolina League. 14 Ks.
Well, if you’re going to be terrible, be atrocious.

It seems like the best trades this front office made might be the Blake and Shoppach deals. Who would have thought that? Not me. You might even be able to throw the Garko trade in there Barnes seems to be pitching well.
Broussard went on to have a successful stint with the Indians, and was traded to the Seattle Mariners on July 26, 2006, for outfielder Shin-Soo Choo and a player to be named later (who turned out to be minor leaguer Shawn Nottingham).
I would much rather see a 39 year old 2b play at this point. I dont think he is learning anything just losing confidence, in my view
I wonder if we can send Marte on a 10-day rehab assignment and teach him some new positions.

Such a nice night and a good game so far. Our seats are not far from the field down the first base line. LGT!

Ok, I was putting it off because I now have no reserve batters… but Santana added to the CBS fantasy team.
"I call myself common sense" —Manny Acta
you pick him up off waivers? I still feel dumb for not putting in a claim.
"I call myself common sense" —Manny Acta
No, this isn’t the CBS league I’m talking about. It’s the LGT yahoo league.
I just knew that playing with all Tribe fans Santana would be picked up in a hurry, so I decided to draft him.
Mike Napoli soon to be DFA’d on my fantasy team to make room.

Anybody else looking forward to the draft?
I’ve been following almost every little tidbit of information since December.
I am. Grant’s done some good since he took the reigns. Last year’s draft already has interesting guys in White, Kipnis, Gardner, Adams. 2008 included Chiz, Phelps, Putnam, House, Haley. So far, so good, yea?
See, this plus the trades we made should be enough to at least be mildly optimistic about the next few years. Read em and speculate optimistically!
I’m not the least bit worried about LaPorta. Even some of the best players we’ve ever had were far, far from consistent. Vic would bat like .200 for 70 games then bat .450 for the rest of the season. We didn’t give up much for Marte, so it is what it is.
What the Indians gave up is irrelevant as to whether what the Indians have now will help them win. The Indians didn’t trade Sabathia to get LaPorta, they got LaPorta because they had to trade Sabathia.
Also, LaPorta is not the pure hitter that Victor is. I’m hopeful that LaPorta will figure out something, but he’s apparently not going to be a Jason Bay or early-career Aubrey Huff. He still can and should have productive seasons, but something there hasn’t clicked.
I don’t know what you’re referencing there. All I said was that the the trades netted several prospects to combine with an apparently improved drafting process. That’s enough for me to be optimistic, I don’t need to wait for them to come up and play well. I’ll enjoy this part of the process rather than bemoan it. That’s why I referenced that fanpost.
Optimism is instant for me, and requires very little evidence. Conversely, my opinion/judgment of whether a player or trade lives up to expectation requires substantial evidence, to the tune of several years.
I think we had this discussion regarding how long one waits before they evaluate trades.
I have to think Pomeranz falls to us there, and if so, there’s no way they can pass on him. That spike curve sounds awesome.
LGT's resident moderate Yankee hating fan.
He has been inconsistent though and scouts need to determine if his drop in velocity lately has been due to a minor injury he has or if it’s something more serious. His command is also shaky.
I believe it was pec injury that he suffered. Even so, when your fastball drops from 93 to 87, teams will be a bit uneasy.
Hey, the Twins knew what the deal was with Kyle Gibson last year and it looks like they got a steal at 22. If it’s the right player, and your scouts say so, you take your man.
Oh, I agree, but it might not be the slam dunk it once was. That’s why I said that we need to know for sure his poor performance the last few starts aren’t anything to worry about.
Speaking of the Twins, they could pull another Gibson this year and draft Jesse Hahn. Similar circumstance.
I’d probably take Gibson over White. Tough to balance the risk versus the reward. The Indians pick at 5 and then not again until 55. They’ll spend quite a bit at number five, but I hope the budget includes some dough for some later high-upside, over-slot selections. They’re not going to be spending any cash in the bonus rounds, but I’m not sure if the 5th pick will eat the budget.
I can’t see them blowing it all on the 1st round. After Harper and Taillon there isn’t a standout talent that would warrant that kind of money. I hope they go slot or maybe a bit more and save enough to draft, like you said, high upside kids.
I’m so afraid of high school bats (Sale). Bad-conference players scare me (Choice, meet Beau Mills). Lefties with pitchability scare me.
I remember how unenthusiastic my reaction was to Talbot being the PTBNL for Shoppach, but I’ll settle for him now.
You know what would be perfect? That ad we’ve had here with that news update featuring the girl who looks nothing like a news anchor.

About a year ago I was in a hotel room with little to do for the time being and was flipping around the TV. Soccer was on. I said to myself “JACKSON, listen up! You don’t want to be the dumb, cliched American white guy who likes baseball, football, basketball, boxing, MMA, and all the such, but you don’t like the most popular sport in the world. You’ve never even given it a chance! You’re going to sit here and watch this entire soccer game and THEN you can make a decision on your opinion of it”.
I lasted about seven minutes. I hate myself.
I’m European, so for me it’s basically second nature to like soccer, but I can definately see why it’s not that appealing to some people, especially Americans. Heck, it’s boring to me more times than not.
well, I’m rooting for my own country obviously, but Spain is indeed one of the favorites. Portugal is a pretty dangerous dark horse candidate as well.
Yeah, I think so too.
I brought it up because it was made by an ad agency here in Amsterdam (though they have offices all over the world), and I used to work there during college.

So I’m looking up and down our lineup. Everyone has done something productive. Six have at least one hit, and while Valbuena and Marson have not recorded a hit, they have brought in runs. Then I see Trevor Crowe atop the lineup. DAMN YOU, ANTI-CONSTANZAS.
What do you expect from a 60 year old?

Quick hook tonight for Talbot, after 77 pitches. Manny loves the bullpen, and you can’t blame him with the way Perez and Sipp have pitched.

“Masterson: the indians are still evaluating whether he will stay in the rotation”
“he will get one more start at least”
—Hammy
"I call myself common sense" —Manny Acta
Yea, Castro says that Masterson is getting the start in Yankee Stadium. With the short left field porch, that game should be ugly. But since it’s a setup for failure, the universe will reverse and he’ll shine.
Believe in blind squirrels and acorns. And I remember Wayne Garland two-hitting the Yankees during his tenure of suck with the Tribe.
by kennesawmountainwahoo on May 25, 2010 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions
If Jeremy Sowers can throw back to back shutouts. If Billy Traber can one-hit the Yankees. Then one day, and one day only, Masterson can have his moment.
Unprecedented at the time though. And I agree it was gritty suck. That guy never gave up.

Yeah, it sounds like a teeny amount today. The inflation calculator says 2.3 mil in 1977 equals 8 mil in 2009.
Shows you what revenues have done.

Theoretically, Masterson goes to the bullpen. Who do you put into the rotation? Laffey? Rondon? Pino? SOWERS?
How on earth could you?

Anybody want to buy a Stephen Strasburg card on ebay. Current bid is at $14,299.99, so it’s a bargain.
I don’t get the Strasburg hype. I understand he’s good, really good. But this is baseball. There was no Lincecum watch. And chances are, Strasburg’s first few years can’t compare to Lincecum.
True, but there’s been so much hype surrounding young players in the minors or draft eligibles that people all of a sudden care about that aspect of the game.
That said, Steve Phillips would trade Strasburg for Oswalt.
I care about that aspect of the game. But just by CARING about it doesn’t make baseball into basketball or football—it’s damn hard to join MLB and have sustainable success from the start.
Don’t remind me of the 23K I spent on Jamarcus cards.

I agree, but what I meant was ESPN and SI’s involvement all of a sudden opens up the obscurity that is the mlb draft and lower minors to the casual baseball fans. People hear the names, the comparisons, the hype, but fail to understand the odds of these kids living up to that. That’s why you see such a knee-jerk reaction, just like you’ll see when Strasburg has a poor start or gets injured.
