Not really a surprise considering the crowd they’re asking to vote.
A normal fan would probably vote for Wagner.
Glad to know I’m a normal fan.
I like Omar and I agree he is better than 95% of Shortstops historically. He is possibly the best Tribe SS ever, but he is not better than Wagner, Ripkin, A-Rod, Banks. A better question would be is Omar a top 10 SS of all time.
At least some of them are honest:
I’am not old enough to have seen some of the others.Too bad there’s no way to use a computer to find out the statistics of retired baseball players.Maybe someone can bring to lite the offensive numbers of some of the others before Omar and Ozzie.
In my opinion, Omar’s not even the best Indian on the list.
The poll choices are worse than the results. Just for comparison, here’s the Top 7 per Bill James ten years ago:
- Honus Wagner
- Arky Vaughn
- Cal Ripken Jr.
- Robin Yount
- Ernie Banks
- Barry Larkin
- Ozzie Smith
- Joe Cronin
- Alan Trammell
- Pee Wee Reese
Add to that list A-Rod and Jeter, both of whom have at least passed Ozzie Smith by this point. (A-Rod, who has more home runs as a shortstop than anybody else, 345, and did it in just eight seasons, is arguably #2.)
I think that almost anyone who took some time to look at it would end up with some combination of these 12 in their Top 9. So how many of them are this poll’s nine options?
Four. Aside from the no-brainer Wagner, they offered only three plausible choices out of eight. (Boudreau, Aparicio and Rizzuto are all Top 20, but the argument that they are Top 10 is pretty weak.)
Here are their choices along with Bill James ranks:
Omar Vizquel — originally in the 60s, now probably would be in the low-20s
Luis Aparicio — #13
Cal Ripken Jr. — #3
Ozzie Smith — #7
Lou Boudreau — #12
Pee Wee Reese — #10
Phil Rizzuto — #16
Honus Wagner — #1
Robin Yount — #4
We can forgive them an indulgence or two such as Boudreau. But you can’t do this poll without Vaughn, Banks, Larkin, A-Rod and Jeter.

Nice to see you giving it the old college try in the comments section.

Is Vaughn the least famous great baseball player ever?

As if to prove my point, it’s actually spelled Vaughan.

And what do you know, he peaked at age 23. Obviously juicing.

On the other hand, this pole objectiviely demonstrates that 42% of cleve.com’ers are idiots.
(I know we feel that 100% are loons, but now we have hard numbers to support our agrument.)
I love the fact that you spelled “poll” wrong in the same sentence in which you called another group of people idiots.
Come on, four billion!
Now, he’s talking about that pole … over there. The one the clevecommers repeatedly stick their tongues to in the dead of winter.
