Are the Indians looking to sell?
Hey everyone, visiting semi-fan (I jumped on the bandwagon a few years ago) and die-hard Padres fan who finds myself in a very unusual situation: The Padres haven't opened with torrential suckage. Naturally, this has gotten hopes high (prematurely, perhaps, but all the same). Also adding to the hope is the statement by our new GM that the Padres will probably look to add at the deadline-- middle infield, starting pitching, and outfielders, the most common name bandied about being that of Roy Oswalt, with some mutters about an Adrian Gonzalez/Dustin Pedroia trade.
Not to rub it in, but you guys haven't been having a banner year thus far-- augmented by key players having slow starts. I'm curious if the Tribe is willing to sell? The Friars recently reloaded their farm system, and I'm sure they'd be willing to deal some projects, especially to acquire a real difference-maker.
I'm sure y'all are sick of hearing people ask to have Grady Sizemore, but I love this guy and think he'd be a great addition--especially if we could snag him at a reduced price due to his recent slump. What kind of recompense would you want if you were to trade him? Just out of curiosity.
Now, this is my first post here, so don't be too harsh-- I'm just checking in on some possibilities. Thoughts?

Just testing the waters.
Out of all the possibilities I could think of (and there were a lot— Rick Ankiel, Rocco Baldelli, Reggie Willits, Kosuke Fukudome, and more), Sizemore is the only outfielder I could mention trading for without getting laughed down at GLB. Who wouldn’t want that guy on their team?
Besides which, I’m only a casual follower of the Indians and don’t know where they’re trying to go. Are they gonna ride the storm out, look to add pieces for a “win-now” mentality, or rebuild? You tell me.
The Padres are good, but make no mistake: we've gotta beef up the linwup.
If I had a nickel from every SBN blog that has banned me, Arrowhead Pride would owe me 5¢.

Sizemore is the only outfielder I could mention trading for without getting laughed down at GLB.
And yet, Sizemore is exactly the one that should get laughed down.
The Padres would have to give away half their farm system to get Sizemore prior to 2012.

That probably wouldn’t be an impossibility. The Padres have been a moribund franchise the last few years and as a result collected a LOT of pretty high draft picks. Names from the minors who are being considered “on the block” are Poreda, Cesar Carillo, Luis Durango, Aaron Cunningham, and Sean Gallagher.
And if not Sizemore, what other pieces might management be willing to part with? I know Wood, Peralta, and Hafner have been subpar this year, but would the front office really give up on them?

Can’t believe nobody has mentioned this so far … the guy you should be talking about is Austin Kearns.
Why do we seem to be a great place to sign a one year deal to showcase skills and then get either traded, or go get a better contract?

Because, historically, our roster has holes that need filled.

Pass. We tried out a former ace who had been broken by Dusty Baker last year and it didn’t work. Peralta might be a good bench bat.
One thing I will say that the Padres and Indians have in common: standout young shortstops named Cabrera.

How’s Everth’s defense? Because if it isn’t well above average, I wouldn’t call him a standout nor should he be mentioned with Asdrubal.
He’s got outstanding range— almost as good as his predecessor Khalil Greene in that respect— and a good glove, but his offense needs to improve.

This is the Padres system we’re talking about. Their 20th best prospect is not worth a hot dog.

Maybe not the Padres you're familiar with.
The best thing Kevin Towers did for the franchise (some would say the only good thing) was to restock the minors top-to-bottom. We’ve also been active in dealing for prospects, so I’d say there are definitely some tradeable pieces in there.

Here’s the deal: you get Sizemore just as long as you’re willing to take Wood and Hafner too. All three for a bag of balls and a gallon of Stadium Mustard. You in?
Resident LGT results-oriented boob.
Deal!
As a show of goodwill, we’ll even add Aaron Poreda and a platter of fish tacos.

Doesn’t sound half-bad – Poreda has a good arm, but little command from what I know about him. He was the White Sox’s top prospect not too long ago (he was the main piece in the Peavy trade).
Of course, the chances of trading Sizemore are small, but I think several here are concerned because he does not look like the same hitter as of a few years ago, and I think everyone will agree that he will NOT be here beyond 2012 at the latest. If this was late 2011 or early 2012, I think you might have your next OFer, but at this point, Sizemore is probably not a tradeable commodity yet.
Whether Sizemore rebounds enough to be considered a valuable tradeable commodity at the end of 2011 or early 2012, that remains to be seen – he has not looked good at the plate for a while, and not just against LHP either. He is chasing way too many pitches and is often too pull-happy, which doesn’t help the contact issues either. Only time will tell whether he can regain his old form, but right now, he is far from it.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
If you want Sizemore this year, you can have him for the low, low price of Chase Headley and Mat Latos.

Touché.

We have a catcher who turns 24 in a month—Lou Marson—and I’m tellin’ ya Andy Marte is the next Phil Nevin. A once early bloomer who is now a late bloomer. Also, take a glance at our pitchers. Need a left handed starter? We have a few.
Can you name three or more of your “untradeables?”
I can try.
-Headley, who has a good shot at the 30-30 club this year and in years to come.
-Latos, who is projected by most as a future No.1 starter
-Clayton Richard, who was the real difference-maker in the Jake Peavy deal and also has ace potential.
Other than that, everybody on the roster is on notice. The big names are obviously Gonzalez and Heath Bell, but we’ll also send you Jerry Hairston Jr. for a bucket of balls.

posts like this always show up….these and people visiting Cleveland, maybe someone should make a definitive guide on who we will sell, and who we will not

Did anybody else think this was about the team moving?

I did, again, even after reading the thread a first time.

I did. But is there really a place to move to (other than another team in NY)?

What has he done to be labeled a douche again? I honestly can’t think of anything, aside from playing for the Red Sox.
Was he relieved of his doucheness at some point? Not to my knowledge. He’s still on the original label and doesn’t need to do anything new.
Not when you’re the guy who is 1.0 on the Pedroia Scale.

That’s adjusted for park and position factors.

This isn’t fresh in my mind but I think it was his rookie year when one of our pitchers threw a ball way inside for ball 4 and the entire way to first he was staring the guy down and running his mouth. The radio guys hated it too.
I don’t remember when this happened, but I do remember watching it thinking “who the eff is does this guy think he is?”
You are reading my signature.
It will pain a lot of people to hear this, but now that I am forced to watch a lot of Red Sox games…Dustin Pedroia is a pretty fun player to watch. He is far and away the most exciting player on the Sox to watch. He does look like an animated little troll figure, though.
At no point in my life would I find that to be entertaining in a Tribe uniform. And being “Far and away the most exciting player on the [Red] Sox to watch” is fairly close to saying “Far and away the most exciting player on the Yankees to watch”. Neither makes me yearn for the days of Pedroia jersey’s over-running the blue T-shirt section at Unique Thrift Store in Old Brooklyn, OH.
douchieness doesn’t equate to positional value?

From a PR perspective, it’s impossible to trade Grady Sizemore. The FO has promised the fans that we will get back to contention possibly next year and definitely in 2012.
By trading Sizemore, you send a signal that you are pushing that date back even further. The fanbase is already shattered from the 2009 season .. to do it again would put us in Florida Marlin territory. That’s untenable.
Marlins’ 2010 attendance: 278,719, 17,420 per game.
Indians’ 2010 attendance: 205.250, 14,661 per game.
A more accurate measure may be to look at the decline in attendance over the same number of games last year. That should be close enough to controlling for the weather. By that measure, the Indians are in bad shape, with attendance declining by 31% per game. The Marlins are down 14.7%. The Mets and the Blue Jays are the only other teams to decline by more than 20% per game. The 2009 Indians were buoyed somewhat by having a Monday-Wed series against Boston, which was sure to outdraw the series this year against Toronto.
On the flip side, the only teams drawing more fans in 2010 than they did last year are Minnesota (duh), Atlanta (Heyward), Detroit, the Dodgers, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Texas, Pittsburgh and San Francisco.
Detroit is an interesting example. That kind of belies the excuse which says the regional economy has much to do with declining attendance.
Detroit is essentially flat (up 178/game). They were also helped immensely by this week’s series against the Jackasses.
According to the Census Bureau’s website, the Detroit-Warren-Flint Combined Statistical Area had 5.327 million people in 2009, compared to the Cleveland-Akron-Elyria Combined Statistical Area contained 2.892 million people. The Detroit CSA contains 184.2% of the population of the Cleveland CSA. According to Chuck’s figures in the other thread, they are drawing at a rate of 188.6% of Cleveland, which means they are, very nearly, drawing fans at an almost proportional rate as the Indians relative to their population base.
