Chris Gimenez joins the team, and Redmond is sent packing. More power off the bench.

Gimenez is not as bad as he showed last year, and he's no defensive wizard. Still, he'll only be behind the dish once per week. Make the most of it.

For the record:

Gimenez, 27 years old, is hitting .276/.341/.464/.805 in 196ABs. He has a 20BB/38K ratio, and 9HR and 10 doubles. On the Clippers, who doesn’t?

Somewhat curious. Gimenez isn’t a bad piece, though. Decent power, decent patience, and defensive versatility.

by APV on Jul 10, 2010 5:18 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, I think it’s a bit curious too… unless we think a team will give us a Yohan Pino for him.

Must not be here for baseball either. Because that isn't what we're playing.

Seriously what’s the point? See if Marson can build up enough of a credible AAA offensive portfolio to become trade bait?

by cheech99 on Jul 10, 2010 5:50 PM EDT reply actions

Marson playing once per week is just not worth wasting his service time.

by xrickx on Jul 10, 2010 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

That extra $100K he’d get as a super two would be a killer.

Right, his swing is going to get better sitting on the bench.

by xrickx on Jul 10, 2010 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, that’s a far better reason. Eventually he will need to figure out how to play one game out of six, though.

Is it not obvious that Marson needs a lot more reps?

He’s still a very good prospect; you don’t leave him on the bench to rot until you really have no other viable option.

What this move is really about is a limited window for seeing what Giminez can do as a 25th man.

Anderson Hernandez is thrilled to have moved up to #24.

I chuckled.

In the new Geico commercial, Marte sings "Let me be myself" on Wedge's front lawn (with the cavemen).

by V-Mart Shopper on Jul 10, 2010 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions

What Jay said. Marson is still very much a real prospect and Gimenez may actually be useful. This move acknowledges both of those realities.

by APV on Jul 10, 2010 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Makes sense to me. He’s up to answer the question of whether we need to sign a Redmond next spring.

And if Giminez is better than Redmond, why not? We’ve already go a veteran catcher to help Carlos. He’s coaching first.

by dgcambridge on Jul 11, 2010 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it came down to (1) Gimenez hitting better than expected, (2) Redmond hitting even worse than expected, and (3) the rotation feeling a lot more stable than anyone expected.

Was Redmond’s last AB as an Indian the embarrassing hit to the outfield when the RF threw him out at first?

by JulioBernazard on Jul 11, 2010 10:56 AM EDT reply actions

That was his penultimate AB, in the 6th. In the ninth, F9.

Haven’t consulted the spray charts, but I don’t recall seeing Redmond hit a ball to the left of second base.

by odradek on Jul 11, 2010 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

A couple of times…purely accidental.

by TribeJay on Jul 11, 2010 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

You can’t really keep a guy who can’t hit the ball to the left, can’t hit the ball deep to right field, and can get thrown out from shallow right field. That basically gives him about 5% of the field to work with.

by Jay on Jul 11, 2010 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

is that the same 5% that Peralta covers?

by stuart dean on Jul 12, 2010 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

It was the only 9-3 putout in Athletics history. Ryan Sweeney laughed when informed of that fact. I hope Redmond would laugh, too.

by ameliorate on Jul 11, 2010 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Really? That franchise has been around since 1871, and that’s never happened before?
