Smoak is probably better than Matt LaPorta was at the time of the Brewers acquisition of CC Sabathia in 2008, the gold standard of pitcher rental deals.
Jack Moore in an unremarkable analysis of the Lee deal. Quoting because: how schizo is the perception of the Sabathia/Lee deals?

I admire Moore’s courageous use of the word probably.

Considering Smoak is already in the Big’s, that does make sense.
"Spring Training wins are good for the soul."
I thought Phillips/Lee/Sizemore was the “gold standard”.
And, really, would anyone have said that last month before LaPorta came back up to Cleveland and started hitting?

I think he just chose the wrong words. I think he means it’s the benchmark, the standard, for a good deal — not the deal to which all other deals aspire.
This seems to have a certain circular logic to it. Ignore what he wrote cuz he’s really not that dumb. And how are we to know that? Based on his bad writing? I’m lost.
