I think he just chose the wrong words. I think he means it’s the benchmark, the standard, for a good deal — not the deal to which all other deals aspire.

He might just mean it is the gold standard from the Brewers’ perspective. Just focusing on the short term benefit the trade was supposed to provide for the Brewers, it’s hard to argue that it isn’t a gold standard for such deals.
