CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
…to paraphrase some of my favorite GameThread posts.
And those CHOOOO GameThread posts always remind me of a Bradbury Thompson layout for Westvaco’s Inspirations for Printers, for you graphic designers out there.
Their plant in the southwestern corner of Maryland has been noted, over the last 20 years, for the chocolate-colored effluents it releases into the Potomoc River, and high dioxin levels in fish, and for the sour odors that pulp mills emit, and for occasionally exceeding air pollution emission levels. Westvaco is a big opponent of cap-and-trade, saying those regs could cost it $60 million a year, putting 1,500 jobs at risk. The million-plus acres of forest they own across AL GA SC VA and WV are all managed to the standards of the SFI, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, a 501( c )3, but whether that group is a shill for the industry is disputed. The Sierra Club is suing the USDA for giving a MeadWestvaco subsidiary permits to plant a quarter million genetically altered Eucalyptus trees across the south.
The eucalyptus will take over. Someone once had the bright idea of importing kudzu as forage for cattle. History has apparently not recorded the name of the person who thought this would work.
Masterson’s taking his next start on regular rest. So they’ve got over a week to figure it out, I guess.
No, they need a starter for the slot between Jake on Monday and Fausto on Wednesday. Or for Monday, if they want to keep Jake & Fausto back to back. Next scheduled off day is Monday, Aug. 9, by the way.
I’m beginning to wonder. It’s been a weirdly durable year for SP—almost 80% of the 150 pitchers who comprise MLB’s 5-man rotations have made at least 15 starts. Most teams are 4 deep still, quite a few 5 deep. Not many contending teams have pressing need for a Fausto—StL, the Dodgers, the Mets, COL. For Jake, even fewer. And you’ve got a market offering Roy Oswalt, Dan Haren, Ted Lilly and everyone on the Royals. Not a seller’s market, I think, and the Indians aren’t desperate sellers, anyway.
INDIANS (40-55): CF Brantley, SS Cabrera, RF Choo, C Santana, DH Hafner, 3B Peralta, 1B LaPorta, LF Crowe, 2B Donald. RHP Fausto Carmona (9-7, 3.65).
For what it’s worth, or something.
I don’t dig peralta or brantley. I don’t mind Crowe nearly as much.

Let’s be clear. With that statement, I said I mind him less than the other two. Not that I don’t mind him at all.

I went to look up some stats to justify my loathing of Crowe over Peralta, but they aren’t really there. Nevertheless, I still despise the Trevor Crowe Experience.
To clarify, I have no expectations for Crowe. He’s a fourth outfielder. Peralta is our starting 3rd baseman and was supposed to have a Peralta-like year this year to have trade value for the club. And he of course forgot how to hit homeruns. We are just counting down the days until he’s traded for whatever will come in return, to open up a spot in the infield for younger players. A little more frustrating to me than Crowe.
