Good. Brantley got round two and proved he still needs work – at AAA. Glad he’s out of the lineup.

Doubt anyone will pick up Hodges.

Or else they’ll be stuck with him?

I’ll lose a great conversation. I teach at the HS that Hodges went to. I love talking about the Tribe with him when he is around.

Are you saying he won’t go back to his old high school?

Oh I’m sure he will. But it won’t be the same if he isn’t playing for the Tribe organization.

I have neither gone back to, nor do I have any desire to go back to, Tallmadge High School. Can’t see that changing any time soon.

by FredOx on Jul 27, 2010 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I went back twice my freshman year in college, mostly for a girl who was a senior. Never since. I don’t hold ill will towards my high school. I just don’t care much about it.

by nickjs21 on Jul 27, 2010 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, it’s not ill will. It’s apathy.

I did take my kids past Topeka High School (my actual alma mater, if you want to get technical about it), because it has a cool bell tower.

Maybe he doesn’t want you back.

by YoDaddyWags on Jul 27, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Like Nick, I went back once or twice the year after graduating, said hi to some teachers. I found that a few of my old teachers were unexpectedly cold to me but didn’t know why.

Eventually, one of them explained it. One or more English classes used to show the Zefferilli film version of Romeo and Juliet, despite the fact that it includes some brief nudity. Evidently, someone had edited the school’s copy of the videotape so that it switched over to some all-out, hardcore porn at that point in the film.

Some friends and I were known as troublemakers of the prankster variety, and it was widely assumed by teachers and students alike that we had edited the videotape as some kind of a parting F-U to the school. In fact, I have no idea who did it, and the whole things wasn’t really our style anyway.

So then I had to go back around to all the teachers and plead my innocence, asserting that if I had done it, at least I wouldn’t deny it. I had never denied anything else, even under threat of being suspended. The English teachers were glad to know we weren’t the culprits, but at least one pervy science teacher was disappointed that it wasn’t us. He thought it was hilarious. I guess it was.

So that was my visit back to high school. No real plans to go back at this point.

All my visits back to high school but one have all been because they hired me to do some work – the one other one was for a concert or something of my sister’s.

Must not be here for baseball either. Because that isn't what we're playing.

by westbrook on Jul 27, 2010 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

We saw that version. It’s cute that our Catholic school teachers thought it would be scandalous.

It was kind of a rite of passage in freshman English at the Catholic school I went to. The room inevitably erupted in cheers when the flash of nudity appeared onscreen.

I went back a handful of times while I was stumbling through college to visit a trio of favorite teachers. It’s amazing how that huge place got smaller every time I went back.

I go back on occasion, but mostly because the gym is always open and using it is a good (and cheap!) way for my family to blow off steam when visiting for Thanksgiving. The last time I was there my old physics teacher came running out of the lunch room to tell me to “be quiet!”, because I was interrupting the administration of the SAT’s while giving a tour to my children. Felt like old times.

I’d still probably prefer Brantley over Crowe, but as has been discussed, it’s a question of what’s better for Brantley’s development.

Having both in the lineup at once is pretty brutal. But depending on Kearns, we may see it again soon.

At least Brantley cut down his Ks this time. Net positive.

by dgcambridge on Jul 27, 2010 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

That should be “probably prefer Brantley over Crowe on the major league team right now.” Long term, there is no “probably.”

by dgcambridge on Jul 27, 2010 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

There’s no comparison at the plate, altho you can make the case that its simply the lesser of two weevils.

Brantley is an automatic out. Crowe isn’t.

This strikes me as having something to do with Geodert as well. He’s only eight months younger, but he’s a more valuable defender, and he’s out-slugging Hodges in Columbus by more than 200 points. Goedert has 16 HR to Hodges’ 9, and in half as many AB.

The Indians plainly envision rostering Goedert in the fall. Even assuming Peralta’s exit, Geodert and Marte and our overflow of 2B make Hodges utterly superfluous on the roster. By the same token, with Duncan looking serviceable and Weglarz arriving, I don’t imagine Jordan Brown will continue to hold onto a spot.

hoynsie #Indians manager Manny Acta says Michael Brantley will be back soon after getting optioned to make room for Josh Tomlin.
12 minutes ago via txt

Ok, but the roster is stable right now: 5 starters, 7 pen, 4 outfielders. I assume Tomlin is up to stay until he craps out and/or Laffey returns. He’s not getting sent back on Wednesday, right?

(Of course, any trades will change everything.)

by dgcambridge on Jul 27, 2010 5:06 PM EDT reply actions

I figured he was getting sent back down…

I would expect that they’ll get the rotation re-set and then bring Carrasco up. He seems to be at the top of their list for getting an extended look.

by Jay on Jul 27, 2010 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

He got yanked after 70 pitches the other night. Health is in question, I’d say.

by afh4 on Jul 27, 2010 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

And what do you do about Tomlin after this start he just had

by hans on Jul 27, 2010 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey, keep him up, preserve the option year?

by Jay on Jul 27, 2010 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve heard worse ideas.

by Jay on Jul 28, 2010 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Not that you just unilaterally make that decision, but if he pitches ok, just keep him up. And if you move Westbrook, then that opens a spot for Carrasco.

by TribeJay on Jul 28, 2010 8:13 AM EDT up reply actions

how many starts is that until call-ups anyway…

Also! when (if) do we see masterson and talbot’s innings watch?

by Brick. on Jul 28, 2010 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s true too, its only a month until the 25 expands to 40, so that’s probably six starts or so for Tomlin. Perserve the option year as Jay said. Carrasco hasn’t really been pounding down the door to make his way up (and/or is injured).

by hans on Jul 28, 2010 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Somebody just wrote the other day about Talbot’s innings limit. I can’t remember it or find it but it’s what you’d expect, as I remember-170 or something.

by afh4 on Jul 28, 2010 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t remember hearing any actual #s but Hammy has talked about Talbot and Masterson inning watches.

by westbrook on Jul 28, 2010 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

This might be covered in the game thread, but Castro says he’s penciled in as the probable for his next turn in the rotation.

No off days until 8/9 (holy crap, it’s almost mid-August) so I don’t see why he won’t stay up until Laffey returns.

Must not be here for baseball either. Because that isn't what we're playing.

Interesting choice at catcher position for Tomlin. Gimenez over Santana does this have more to do with a day off for Carlos or comfort level with Gimenez?

by johio1 on Jul 27, 2010 6:23 PM EDT reply actions

My guess: (1) comfort level, (2) save Carlos for games that are a little more winnable.

by Jay on Jul 27, 2010 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

This game is winnable, baby!

His pinstripe count is up. 389 last season vs. 411 this year.

I think he just needed a full day off…he’s been getting beat by fastballs lately. I think Acta just chose today for comfort level and because they were facing a lefty (look at Santana’s splits).

by TribeJay on Jul 27, 2010 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep, plus he’s 2 for his last 20 PAs, with 2 BBs and 6 Ks. Not that those five games necessarily signal anything in particular, but maybe seemed like the right moment to rest him.
