#Indians getting hits on LHR Rafael Perez, not motivated to move him. Affordable in '11 and has value to team. Westbrook action (more) #MLB
Rosenthal on twitter. In his next tweet he reiterates that market for Westbrook is limited and he likely will move in August.
Move Perez, I say.

Surprised they don’t want to move Perez. I guess they think his recent turnaround is real and they can rely on him as a lefty specialist.

why “want” to move him? what really is the return for a guy like this? more valuable that what he can provide himself? seems like the kind of guy we’d want to take a chance on if he were on someone else’s team. not sure why i’m on the “keep perez” boat all of the sudden.
Want to move him because of his past 2 years of performance, June and July 2010 notwithstanding. But even the way he pitches now with his improvement is not quite what he used to be. Do you agree to that? So getting some value for him would be a wise decision especially if he might relapse into the worst reliever in baseball.

i think this presumes there’s value out there to be gotten. other teams trading for him will cite those two years as well and won’t want to give up anything. i think the “high” is being overrated in this sell.
If they want him for a playoff run, are they really going to expect to get him for “nothing?” A slap on the back? A wink? They have to make a trade offer. There are better and worse offers, but I think if there is anything reasonable you take it at this point without much hope of Perez being a foundation of 2011’s bullpen.

players get traded for “nothing” all the time.
trying to find similar examples for non-elite relievers from last year:
Nationals trade LHP Joe Beimel to Rockies for minor league RHP Ryan Mattheus and RHP Robinson Fabian.
Dodgers trade RHP Claudio Vargas to Brewers for minor league UT Vinny Rottino.
Pirates trade LHP John Grabow and LHP Tom Gorzelanny to Cubs for RHP Kevin Hart, RHP Jose Ascanio and minor league IF Josh Harrison.
Indians trade RHP Rafael Betancourt to Rockies for minor league RHP Connor Graham.
Diamondbacks trade RP Tony Pena to White Sox for minor league IF Brandon Allen.
Where does perez fall most similarly, i don’t know. are these returns worth it, i don’t know either. but i don’t think anyone is offering anything overwhelming or we’re not hearing “Affordable in ’11 and has value to team.”
I think Raffy Right actually is an elite reliever and we still got crap for him. That’s all that needs to be said.

Are you talking about the reliever whose option was declined by the Rockies last winter? Why is he an “elite” reliever?
You mean the guy with a sub 3 FIP 3 out of the 4 last years?
Also, you honestly couldn’t have been trying to insinuate that the Rockies declining his option was indicative of anything.
LGT's resident moderate Yankee hating fan.
Um, it’s indicative of the idea that he wasn’t worth 5+ million on the year, no? That they thought they could do better in arbitration, which they decided to offer.
there’s a couple apple-orange things going on here, obviously.
anyway, i think perez’s value is tied up in next year, mostly, particularly to us. but people would be trading for him for what he can provide for the rest of this year. i think that’s where the disconnect is going to happen with what gets offered for him.
Indicative that he isn’t worth 5+ million or perceived to not be worth 5+ million?

How are those “nothing?” If we could get a conor graham out of it, I would think that would be worth trading Perez. Just because you’re not getting someone’s Dominic Brown doesn’t mean that it’s a trade for “nothing.”

But maybe you’re right. Maybe Perez is valuable for Cleveland going forward. Maybe we will have another historically bad bullpen and he will be our best arm to hold a few games…. Can’t really bank on anything else on this point.

two separate thoughts. i’m not saying those are nothing, i’m saying those are examples. i don’t think there’s any way perez yields the same return betancourt did.
i’m saying if you’re only getting someone’s “maybe rafael perez”, just keep your rafael perez – when he doesn’t make much money.
But he’s also nowhere near as good. Right now all he does well his get groundballs.

There’s a lot between Conor Graham and Dom Brown. Graham is still pretty worthless, however.

I don’t believe my post implied otherwise. As to Graham, I don’t see how he was “worthless” but ok.

He’ll look better if his recent improvement in control is the real thing and not a mirage. Of course, this is happening at AA; he still has AAA and the Majors to go.
Based on having very quality left-handed relief options in the farm (until you get down to Chris Jones at High-A Kinston), I think they’ll keep Perez for the remainder of the season; you won’t get much for him, and he has shown to actually be able to get hitters out from time to time. The question is whether he can get back nearer to that level – the consistency of his slider is key.

Consistency in delivering a single pitch should be in bounds, shouldn’t it?

Even in the post-Zombie period, which is to say in June and July, his K% is 13.95, just about half what it was in his halcyon days of 2007 and 2008. No need to sell low if the return is lousy, but Raffy hasn’t given the Indians any reason to hang on to him if value is being offered.
Agree.

I still tighten up a bit when I see him come out of the bullpen.
We have a lot of potentially good relief pitching coming up the pipe. It would be nice to try some more of them out this season. If someone wanted to offer a half-way decent return for Perez, I would be tempted. I sometimes get the feeling that management sees Ambriz, Perez, and Smith as the future of this bullpen, which I am not terribly keen on.
Chris Jones, but he’s down in Kinston.

I always picture a water slide into the pool. One guy coming down with a big smile on his face, one guy climbing out of the pool to go stand in line for his turn on the slide.
Jeremy Sowers: “Hey, no cuts! Why does everybody keep taking cuts?! I want to ride the slide too…” (David Huff laughs at Sowers and tells his mom to Tweet that he’s about to ride the slide, doesn’t see Tomlin and Gomez sneak by him).

“management sees Ambriz, Perez, and Smith as the future of this bullpen”
I doubt it – Perez is LH, which gives him a bit of an edge, being that Jones is the next quality LH reliever, and he’s down at High-A Kinston, whereas Ambriz shows flashes, but is erratic. Smith, I personally cannot see him being a part of the future bullpen – he is a very poor man’s version of Matt Miller – he can’t get lefties out, and he has severe difficulty getting righties out because he keeps falling behind almost every hitter, then comes over the plate with stuff that has no late movement and no plus velocity. If he can’t get ahead of the hitter, he either walks him or gives up a very hard-hit ball.
Personally, I think we have better options than Lee (and even Ambriz and Perez) coming (Stowell, Judy, Pestano for starters, and even others at AA – Lee, even Aguilar is showing some promise). We’re just biding our time until they are ready, and that shouldn’t be too long from now (probably this September, for starters).
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
Can someone remind me on the consensus opinion on Rosenthal? Does he discriminate between good info and sketchy info, or does he just pass on anything anyone says to him?

Fixed. Wood will clear waivers and I think it highly unlikely that anyone takes a chance on him with him currently DLed.

I think everyone would agree unless a compelling offer was made. Those in favor of the trade are assuming something is offered by one of these multiple “hits.”
Also! I hope we can pull off getting this guy from the Yanks for Westbrook.

at this point, I just want the spot at third base to open up. I would take the proverbial bag of baseballs…provided they aren’t A-Rod’s special baseballs, or whatever he is using in this ridiculous run up to 600.
Well, it’s that time of the year to speculate…
