Per the usual, the Indians downplay the injury from the start. Acta never said “Choo won’t be going on the DL.” He certainly told a half-truth, but I understand not wanting to give the A’s the competitive advantage to know that Choo won’t be pinch-hitting later in the game.
Wonder if his return roster spot will be created by a Kearns trade. Hammy said today that Kearns won’t be given away, as he is a guy that our other hitters look to for leadership. Same thing about Jake and the pitchers.
Must not be here for baseball either. Because that isn't what we're playing.
Yeah, he’s been beating that drum (re: Kearns) all week.

There’s no rush to dump him because his salary is negligible and when Choo returns, the only people who will lose ABs are Crowe/Duncan in LF. It very well could be Crowe who goes back to AAA when Choo is activated in two weeks. It’s not at all comparable to the Branyan/LaPorta situation, because nobody is blocked.
Pluto’s column said also the Indians aren’t looking to make a salary dump with Jake. I don’t doubt that the Indians can afford him for the rest of the year, but I think the Indians gladly deal him and even pay a big chunk of his salary if it makes the return worthwhile.
I keep reading that the Indians aren’t dying to trade Westbrook or Kearns because they provide a valuable leadership presense to the team. As crazy as it might sound, especially a few weeks ago, It seems like a serious possibility that we keep either or both players in order to sign them next season.

Yea, that worked really well with Jamey Carroll. And Jim Thome. And Manny Ramirez. And Albert Belle.
Wouldn’t mind that at all. Wood and Peralta gone, Jake and Kearns under reasonable contracts. I can wee them being very professional influences on what will probably be the youngest 25 in the majors next year.
The Indians will not and should not spend to keep Kearns. if he can’t find any interest and is left to sign for $1.5M or less, sure, you take a shot. But you don’t spend $3M for that production when there are always similar guys freely available.
Delucci types? I’ll admit that’s the kinda contract and comp, but Kearns is such a high calibre defensive player, I’d much rather have a vet like him for that money than just about anyone.
And for that kind of “godfather” role on a young team, the player’s personality does translate into money – a guy like Jake might take a little less to stay here, Antonelli might pay Kearns a little more to do the same, if his coaches say they want him back.
My guess is it’s a pollicus longus injury either extensor or abductor – probably abductor. If it is and it’s serious enough to require surgery, he probably won’t be back to full strength until next year.
