The St. Louis Cardinals have made Cleveland Indians pitcher Jake Westbrook their No. 1 target leading into the trade deadline, according to teams that have spoken with them.
… the Indians haven’t expressed much interest to this point in eating a significant portion of those dollars.
Seems odd why the Indians wouldn’t be willing to pay – they’ve been doing it with the other players we’ve traded, including Branyan (not that much – $2 million, I think) and Peralta (more significant – wasn’t it somewhere between $6-8 million?) I know Westbrook is more ($8-11 million, I think?), but still, just for this season.
They’d probably be more willing if St. Louis ups the ante on the prospect they give us. The question is, how badly do they want Westbrook. The other rumored option is Cook of Colorado, but he’s getting paid $11 million this season, and he’s not been having a good year from what I’ve heard (though I don’t know his stats offhand). Westbrook would be cheaper for them – therefore, they should raise the quality of prospects or give us 2 solid ones – I would think that we could work out a deal, which seems to be the case as the night goes on.

Thanks for the confirmation. I can see why, though again, if the Cardinals gave up a good enough prospect or 2 solid ones, I would think a deal could still be struck. Again, it comes down to, how badly do the Cardinals want him?
They wanted Oswalt, by all indications, but the Astros wouldn’t trade him within the division, and the other options aren’t as attractive as Oswalt (Westbrook included), but Cook has been just as inconsistent as Westbrook this season, and I don’t think Cook is coming off of any type of surgery, plus the fact that Cook is already pitching in the NL. I think Westbrook could be the type of pitcher, like many, who could benefit by pitching in the NL.
Therefore, again, if the Cardinals are willing to pony up via the prospect or prospects given up, I would think the Indians would be willing to pay his salary for the rest of this season, and only for this season.

There’s an announcer here in ATL that sounds a hell of a lot like Harry Doyle. And the fact that they have a Heyward on the team makes you notice it even more.

Ouch 6 in the fourth. This is why there’s more posts on FanShots and FanPosts than game threads.

Rosenthal still tweeting that the Cardinals and Indians talking. You would think that if something’s getting done, it will be before 1:07 tomorrow afternoon, for Jake is scheduled to start.
If the trade does indeed go forth, it feels like it’s gonna be a long couple of months until this season is over.

"Most players will tell you that even when they're 100%, they're not really 100% ... if that makes sense."
Why do you say that? Westbrook has been inconsistent this year, with a few good starts, but just as many inconsistent starts. Therefore, I’m not sure Westbrook’s loss will affect the rotation THAT much – plus, he’s one starter, affecting one game out of five.
In my opinion, in the grand scheme of things, his potential trade isn’t going to make this season any longer or shorter – Peralta’s trade would have more impact since he’s an everyday player, though Peralta was also inconsistent and not much of a factor throughout most of the season.

So he’s had good starts and inconsistent starts?
So the good ones were consistent, but the others were inconsistent?
Is that how this works?
That’s what I meant, but I’ll rephrase.
Westbrook’s “good” starts are where he looked more like his old self before the TJ surgery – 2:1 S:B ratio, high GB:FB ratios, and is having relatively quick innings with only around 15 pitches an inning. Westbrook’s “inconsistent” starts are where he’s under 2:1 S:B ratio, around 1:1 GB:FB ratios, and is throwing a lot of pitches (20+) per inning, thereby not going more than 5-6 innings a game at best.

[Westbrook’s] potential trade isn’t going to make this season any longer or shorter
When the rookie pitchers start pitching like rookies, it’ll seem a tad wee longer.

I see the point, but again, as mentioned, Westbrook wasn’t vintage Westbrook – many of his starts were “long” in their own right; the pre-TJ Westbrook was the type of pitcher who could almost “fly” through a game with quick innings, a steady flow to the game, and few runs given up.
Very few of Westbrook’s starts in 2010 have been like that; ironically, his start against the Yankees may have been his best one this season, and certainly one of his top 3 in terms of being more like the pre-TJ Westbrook. Therefore, again, I don’t think the season is going to seem that much longer with a rookie, whether it would be Huff, Gomez, Pino, etc. than it was with the post-TJ Westbrook, who often labored through most of his starts, struggling to put up 5-6 decent innings in most of his starts, usually giving up 3-5+ runs in those stints.

He’s been decent, probably ranking 10th of the AL Central’s 25 starting slots, and averaging just over 6 IP per start. He’d be a definite upgrade for St. Louis, who are 41-23 with Carpenter, Wainwright and Gomez, and 15-23 with everybody else.

Yeah. Buster just said on twitter that the Indians and Cardinals are in the same ballpark regarding a Westbrook deal. With the same desire to finish a deal.
The Once and Future King
I would be surprised if a deal DOESN’T get done by tomorrow, and I too was thinking it would occur before Westbrook actually starts for us.
At this rate, it seems Wood would be the only one still here of the 4 mentioned (Peralta, Wood, Kearns, Westbrook) past July 31, but Wood could still be had in August.
I was just reading in the Yahoo Trade Rumors that Boston is looking at a lot of relievers, especially before tomorrow’s deadline. TWO Indians’ relievers were mentioned amongst about 10 or so possibilities – Wood being the obvious one, with Perez (Rafael, that is) being the other.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
Yeah. Me too really. And Boston. Interesting.
And…I still like Rafael Perez and think he can be a good one…and hope that the Tribe doesn’t give him up quite yet.
The Once and Future King
I too have not given up on Perez – his inconsistent can be maddening, but between that wipeout slider, which is showing some signs of reappearing on a semi-regular basis, and the fact that he’s LH, plus the fact that they don’t have many LH bullpen options in the farm system, I think the Indians won’t give up on Perez either, especially since he has shown some signs of effectiveness recently.
How ironic, STO is showing the “U-VERSE Saturday Pitching Matchup” between Westbrook and Cecil. As mentioned, I’ll be surprised if that matchup transpires, as I think Westbrook will be gone within the next 12-14 hours (maybe even later tonight, as the Indians have to make a roster move to replace Westbrook to start Saturday’s game).
If Westbrook is traded, I wonder, who starts for the Indians? It’s not Germano; would they move Carmona up one day? I doubt it. I think Huff and Gomez just went within the last few days, so I’m not sure they’re options either. Maybe Pino, although I think he was supposed to go tonight for Columbus if I remember correctly. Therefore, who? That, I think, is the $64K question.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
Yeah. Perez has a plus slider…no doubt.
And with the 1:07 start time…you just might be correct with the “later tonight” time-frame regarding a possible Westbrook trade.
I would assume (probably incorrectly…haha) if Westbrook is in fact dealt that they would just plug in somebody (like you’ve suggested Gomez, Huff and a couple of others) and at this point of the year…just kind of hope for the best in that whoever it is actually preforms serviceable.
The Once and Future King
I was mistaken in terms of the rotation – Tomlin is scheduled to start Sunday, so would he be moved up a day? They won’t move Carmona up 2 days, so forget that.
Jay – I’ll work on “consistent” and “inconsistent” – for the record, I meant to say “inconsistency,” not “inconsistent,” above regarding Perez. “Inconsistency” is not “inconsistent,” right? :-)

Any ideas or reports on who that PTBNL could be? How soon will we know who the PTBNL is, or cash, as I heard it could also be?

Pitcher? What pitcher? I don’t follow. Link please to the thread or threads you’re referring to, as I must have missed it.
Joba?! (I don’t think so – I think I’d take Robertson or even Logan before Joba, who I’m not sure will ever get back to that 2007 form before the midges handled him. :-)
