Source: Westbrook to #Cardinals close. Deal at union level. Trying to work through $$$. Westbrook gets more than 2M ... in bonuses if he is traded. Also nearly 4M on contract remaining.
Ken Rosenthal. We'll probably see a conclusion to this dance before the start of today's game, for Jake is the scheduled starter.
Update: This is looking like a three-team trade, according to FanHouse's Tom Krasovic. The Padres would get Ryan Ludwick, the Indians prospects.
Update: Jake Westbrook has been scratched from the lineup. Josh Tomlin will be making the start. I think it's a done deal.

If the Indians are eating a lot of salary, I would hope for at least one good prospect. Maybe a corner outfielder?
That’s what I’m thinking as well. He has nothing left to prove in the minors and he’s blocked at the major league level. Not a great player, but could be a solid bat at 1st/3rd/LF.
Their system is really barren though.
Ryan Ludwick just got shipped to San Diego…no idea if this is a separate deal, or was made to clear salary.
Per Ed Price, looks like they’d be the 3rd team.
“Padres like chances of getting Ludwick via three-way trade. Padres give up two prospects. Westbrook to #Cardinals”
It was in the Olney chat on ESPN. I wrote in and said something similar to that…but I didn’t get a reply.
The Once and Future King
Who’s this Krasovic guy? St. Lou would get Westbrook and a prospect, Cleveland would get two prospects, Padres get Ludwick?
Castro points out that Westbrook starts in less than an hour, so if this is happening, it’s going to happen very soon.
I just want to believe.
Well, if Jake’s arm doesn’t fall out of his socket during the game, they could always pick up the talks afterward.

Does seem like the Padres have a couple of solid 3B prospects in Darnell, Forsythe and Rincon (according to BA’s top 10).
If we corner the market on 3B prospects, the other teams will have to come crawling to us.

Corner the market on the hot corner. It just might be crazy enough to work.

Sherman backs off his claim that the Pads are backing out. “Pads still in it for sure”. Was too quick to believe 1 source.
I still don’t understand why the Rays wouldn’t be all over Adam Dunn. Add Dunn to that lineup and I think they’re a better overall team than the Yankees.
I’m actually wonderinig why SD wants him. StL has only 3 live arms in their rotation right now.

They seem to like Jon Jay a lot and feel it’s worth shedding the contract
"Ok everyone listen up! I've just invited Dave to suck it!"
I just picked him up the LGT fantasy league this morning, so the timing of this move is perfect.

So the Pads eat Ludwick’s $8mil next year and send money to the Tribe? That just doesn’t make much sense.
I just want to believe.
Now that’s just silly. They could just send the money directly to the Indians instead of paying SD to pay us.

Hmm… does that mean there’s no second prospect? Or is one coming from the Cards?

So someone want to remind me when a team actually signed a guy the offseason after trading him at the deadline?
I think of 14 mid-season deals last year, nobody signed with their original team, while 6 resigned with their new team.
by YoDaddyWags on Jul 31, 2010 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions
obviously it wasn’t a deadline deal, but Kenny is circa ’97 seems pertinent.

Although, Jake did get traded to the one team that signs everybody they trade for.

Corey Kluber was selected by the San Diego Padres in the fourth-round of the 2007 MLB Draft, 134th overall pick.
Kluber was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-Atlantic Region Second Team and the All Ping! Second Team after leading the Hatters to their 2007 NCAA Regional appearance. He was 12-2 with a 2.05 ERA (26 ER/114.0 IP) in 17 starts for Stetson. Kluber, 21, held opponents to a .217 batting average while striking out 117 compared to 36 walks.
I just want to believe.
this is probably because jake is a mediocre starter on an expiring contract coming off an injury.
by supersizeme on Jul 31, 2010 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions
No. I understand the emotion involved, but as has been discussed ad naseum, he’s likely not significantly more likely to resign if he stays. That being the case, he is of literally no value to a 2010 indians team that is playing for 2011. His absence is more than made whole by an AA pitcher with some promise.
by supersizeme on Jul 31, 2010 1:09 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I would hope for more promise than a fringe 5th SP.
But other scouts might like him more. I assume he moves up to AAA immediately right?

How can you call a guy who made the All Ping! second team in 2007 a “fringe 5th SP?” It’s the All Ping! Team!!

Hammy’s mentioned him multiple times as the clubhouse leader. The only other guy he’s mentioned like this: Austin Kearns.
Ummm.
Well since kearns was an off-season minor league signing, it seems leadership isn’t too hard to find

Nice K numbers…. a few too many walks since going to AA…

Keith Law via Twitter:
Cardinals are getting a minor pitching prospect from the Padres, who are sending a better pitching prospect to Cleveland.
The Once and Future King
Castro:
This deal is confirmed. The Indians are receiving Double-A right-hander Corey Kluber from the Padres. More to come on MLB.com and Indians.com soon.
hope we are getting a million or two that we can use on him in a few months… because this return is not impressive so far
I’d like to see him a level higher or a year younger. I’m not sure this is a great return, but we weren’t exactly parting with a stud.
Come on, four billion!
There’s gotta be someone decent coming from the Cards. This is way too thin.
I just want to believe.
my thoughts. He might make the AAA team next year but would need at least 2 full seasons there IMO. He seems to be a slower developer and he is already 24. I was hoping when I saw his age, he was a guy who was at least in AAA and pitching Decent.
I think he is 3 years away from being an everyday MLer.
I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

Intensive Purposes? I could care less...
Jordan Brown is (or will be) called up to take Westbrook’s spot on the roster. Kerry Wood took Kearns’ spot.
Ugh.
I’m not unhappy with Kluber, from what I can tell so far… I was hoping for one more, though.

I think I was very cynical about our potential return. I’d take one guy with a crack at the rotation over two lesser guys, I guess.
Steel Nick
The Cards prospect has to be the linchpin for us – although I keep hearing their system is thin.
I just want to believe.
No, I read the upthread somewhere that the Cards get a SD prospect and send a better prospect on to us. Read my reply to Nick below.
I just want to believe.
I think the belief is that KLaw’s tweet wasn’t implying that STL was sending anything to us.

I read the Indians release written by Castro. It seems that there might not be anything else coming. I have to say, I’m severely disappointed if this is all we got. We didn’t have to trade Jake.
I just want to believe.
But why do we need him for the last two months of this season?
by Buckeye Brad on Jul 31, 2010 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions
So you’re saying we send Westbrook and money to the Cards, they get a player back from the Padres, and they dump Ludwick’s $8mil for nothing?
I just want to believe.
This deal makes total sense for the Indians and Padres. Cleveland unloads an expensive pitcher in exchange for young talent and the Padres get a much-needed bat (Ludwick is hitting .281/.343.484). This addresses needs both clubs have.
It remains a bit of a head-scratcher for St. Louis. Yes, Westbrook — 6-7, 4.65 ERA, 1.154 WHIP — gives them a far more solid number four starter than they’ve had, so that’s good. But still: this is a Cardinals offense that has been inconsistent all year and likely can’t afford to lose much pop.
The prospect heading to Cleveland — Corey Kluber — is a 24 year-old right-handed starter in AA. He strikes out more than a man per inning and seems to have pretty decent control. He may be a find.
Gleeman.
Steel Nick
FYI that was from Craig Calcaterra, not Gleeman.

Yeah, I agree. But I’d rather have the guy with the crack at the rotation, plus someone else…

If the Tribe gets a fifth starter for half a season of a recovering (and, let’s admit it, older) Jake Westbrook, they will have done all right.
