Indians sign 7th rounder Robbie Aviles
He receives a $150,000 signing bonus as well as $200,000 which is for college if he ever decides to go to school. He's also scheduled to have TJ surgery right out of the gate.

Interesting deal. I’m having trouble deciding why I shouldn’t think of this as a 350K signing bonus rather than 150K. I think in terms of contractual commitment, they’ve guaranteed him 350K, and if he makes the majors, they get 200K back.
I like the structure. Anything that makes sure the kid isn’t hung out to dry if he never makes it seems good. The deal sounds like something the Nudge guys would approve of.
Isn’t the 200k for if he ever wants to go to college after he is done with baseball? Like sort of a way to ease his fears of missing out on an education? Am I understanding this wrong?

Yeah, but that’s just an interesting detail. Fact is, the team owes the money, guaranteed.

Agreed…and I’ll pretty much say that for news of every signing
