Reason to believe it’s something more than precautionary? I missed the game he got hurt in, so I don’t know the whole story.
I think we’re committed to playing Jhonny for trade reasons until the end of the July. But if he’s unwanted, and still here at that point, I think we sit him on the bench most days for Marte/Goedert. (I actually think we’ll find a taker, and they’ll get him for a trinket.) But if no one wants him by July 31st, enough is enough, time to move on.
I am not sure were getting anything but a bag of balls of Jhonny. I say just DFA someone and sit Peralta on the bench, see what happens.
Who knows what kind of inner turmoil will occur in Jhonny’s head? He hasn’t been benched or demoted in any way that I can remember (right?).
But we won’t be able to see what happens, but his face is emotionless.
Anyway, as others have pointed out to me, it would be pretty silly to do anything like that before the deadline.
Brantley. I’m still boggling at this.

“Marte is a guy you pull for – good guy who never complains”
Hammy never would have said this while working alongside Wedge.
Must not be here for baseball either. Because that isn't what we're playing.
Boo. I’m always confused when people say that Brantley doesn’t pull the ball. I think he pulls it on the ground all the time. Good things happen when he lifts the ball.
He’s lifted the ball harmlessly into the left fielder’s glove four or five times already.
It’s just a matter of the best choice being somewhere between the extremes. The Indians want him to turn on the ball middle, middle-in, because he’ll never hit for power going the other way. It’s a tough balance, because you want him to use the whole field and, especially against lefties, hit the ball the other way. Still, Brantley, although he’s fast and left-handed, shouldn’t be in Mike Redmond mode just yet.
The Rangers … discussed young first baseman Chris Davis and young catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia in a package for Lee. But the Mariners are believed to prefer Smoak and want more than a Davis-Saltalamacchia tandem, anyway, especially with the bankrupted Rangers likely to need Seattle to pay the $4 million or so remaining on Lee’s $9 million salary.
Must not be here for baseball either. Because that isn't what we're playing.
no. The other names in the article seem unlikely too. Wade Davis, Jesus Montero…

Bankrupted might be a word, but that’s sure as hell the wrong place to use it.

Not much action here or on FTS. I think everyone’s hiding under the bed.
Also, I forgot to get drunk. My apologies.
I’m sure it’s the last thing you want to do, and maybe you’ve vented recently (I haven’t been around as much as in the past), but I’d love to read your thoughts on the circus and the nonsense that has been this free agent process, and I’d bet that I’m not alone.

So I know nothing about basketball, but I understand Cleveland could offer more money. So this is not about the money?
He says its about winning, which is actually laudable.
The problem was the entire week long buildup, the bullshit presentations, and now the TV special.
Blake: Thanks to you, I am damaged beyond repair!!
So now we see if 2.5 superstars and 12.5 roster fillers can win an NBA championship against actual teams. Should be interesting.

They can barely beat Argentina, Brazil or Spain with Bosh, Wade, James and way better supporting players in a short tournament. Hopefully this is more of the same.

We often criticize players for moving to teams solely because of money. Teams that have no shot at winning it all.
So, he actually wants to win. I’m not really defending the guy, because the way he’s handled this has been a disaster.
Blake: Thanks to you, I am damaged beyond repair!!
The way he wants to win is (a) probably ill-conceived and (b) suspiciously Yankees-esque.
by Jay on Jul 8, 2010 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
It will be a circus act. 3 superstar players plus roster filler, can they defeat professional basketball teams? David Stern cashes in big time. But I still don’t understand the praise for “wanting to win.” What player doesn’t want to win? This did not cost him any money. He gets a max contract either way. So it’s not like he took a discount in order to win. Other players on other nba teams might have actually done so this year, but this is not an example.

by V-Mart Shopper on Jul 8, 2010 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Actually, he will be getting less money, unless the Cavs work out a sign and trade. Miami has nothing left to balance a trade based on salaries. Only the Cavs can offer him the max contract.
"Facebook is bad news. It and Jason Donald both crush dreams." - JRontherim
So why would Cleveland facilitate it by signing and trading (again, I know nothing about basketball)
Really, he’s not getting a max contract? Wade and Bosh are…
If I was mistaken I apologize. I had assumed it’s max contract no matter who signs him. And from what I read, Bosh could have had a 6th year with his max contract through sign-and-trade deal, but chose to take the 5-year max contract instead to free up space for lebron…

Max contract from the Cavs would be worth an extra year and about $30 M additional.

Oh, that would make sense. I really hope the Cavs maintain dignity and do not pull off a sign and trade.

My siblings and friends are all huge basketball fans. A few years ago, my friend was in Vegas, and he saw LeBron and Jason Kidd (or some other name player who was good at the time who I can’t recall, because I don’t follow basketball) at a blackjack table.
My friend asked the other star player “Are you gonna come to Cleveland?”
He said, "Why?’
My friend: “To win.”
LeBron turned around. “F$&% Cleveland.”
True story.
Are you serious? Wow, that’s pretty terrible. I would hate him if I was a Clevelander. I think I might hate him anyway because I like you guys…

Lebron made clear on more than one occasion that his loyalty was to his hometown — Akron — not Cleveland.
by Jay on Jul 8, 2010 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m tired of hearing him talk about how difficult it was to choose Miami. And I certainly am tired of his saying that ‘the greatest challenge’ is to win in Miami.
It’s has interesting implications for baseball I guess, depressing ones. I mean that we blame the system for the fact that we can’t afford to resign our stars. But here, a hometown star left money on the table to leave.
Also, Wilbon looks like he’s legitimately in tears over LeBron’s decision to leave. I respect him for it.
Have the Indians ever had one?
"Facebook is bad news. It and Jason Donald both crush dreams." - JRontherim
Right. But I’m saying that LeBron probably had more incentive to stay in Cleveland than C.C., or Manny. And more (contract) money. and he left.
That was Jeff Moorad giving Scott Boras a middle finger, which he now does from the owner’s box of Petco Park.

It is kind of unprecedented to basically have players put their own team together for their own benefit.
That said, the theatrics were ridiculous, and one more arrow in the heart for Cleveland sports.
Don’t worry, I’m sure he’ll take out a full-page ad in the PD thanking everyone. That will make it all better.

Salt on wound.
But, I can’t help but think this is a logical outcome of Curt Flood and the $$ that are involved. First team put together by players that are so rich it doesn’t matter, they decide who they play with and where they play. Unprecedented, and completely divorced from anything other than their desire to win championships.
I’ll be rooting for them to fall on their face, however.
The great thing is that LBJ knows squat about building a championship team, since he pretty much signed off on every single player move the Cavs have made over the last seven years and he still has no ring.

I’ll tell you guys though, it’s really fun as a Raps fan to boo Vince Carter every time he comes to town and touches the ball. Sure we suck, but those 2-3 games/year are really fun.
I seriously think the Raptors need a new team name and logo.

One upside is, unlike MLB, the NBA’s cap rules make it possible that with the right moves in the draft and free agency, the Cavs could quickly be competitive again.
Blake: Thanks to you, I am damaged beyond repair!!
It’s not that cap rules that make it possible. It’s the fact that ONE player can make you interesting. Two can make you competitive.
Well, one team cannot legitimately outspend another by $150 million.

Somewhere tonight in Caracas, a young 10-year little league pitching phenom watched ESPN tonight, and vowed that he would never do this to Cleveland. That kid will lead us to the World Series championship in 2025. And in the post-game celebration, he’ll look into the camera and say “Hey LeBron, I’ve got one more ring than you do”.
But he’ll say it all badass in Spanish.

So what is the Cavs strategy going forward? They do have room to add a big contract, who is left that they could get? Or do they pick up some younger talents with potential and hope to get next year’s top draft pick?

"Most players will tell you that even when they're 100%, they're not really 100% ... if that makes sense."
So…I’m out on the NBA. 100% forever. Not sure on the etiquette here, but I would never leave for another team or sit out for a while and jump back in. I don’t need it – I have plenty of things to do. We had a good 25 year run.
I can’t really blame LeBron for leaving the city – pretty much every other star athlete has done the same, and a hell of a lot of people in my life, including me. (Though you can certainly blame him for these past few weeks. Horrible.)
Not really mad, just had enough really. It always seemed like a 12-year old’s sport, in a way. And I could use another “historic” Boston-LA matchup like I could use a new Predator movie. Just bland now.
We’ve seen a lot a fun, talented NBA teams – true athletic teams – like the current Trailblazers or Thunder – yet it’s always the same superstar who wins: Kobe, Shaq, Jordan, Robinson, Garnett. The whole chemistry thing is a sham, sorry Simmons. It’s about the top dog or two. I’m not sitting around, hoping for a single savior. Is that supposed to be fun? No other sport is like that, thankfully.
So yeah, call it sour grapes if you want. But I’m moving on from your silly little game.
Good post. I gave up on the NBA long ago—well before Lebron graduated from high school—and haven’t missed it at all. I sort of enjoyed watching it during the days of Jordan, Bird and Isiah (and Dr. J and World B. Free) but the game became increasingly cartoonish. I think you’re right about it being a 12-year-old’s sport.
