Game 121: Indians 7, Royals 3
The Indians won in spite of themselves. They committed five errors, Mitch Talbot couldn't finish the fifth inning, and the offense didn't score a run until the eighth inning, but pulled away with seven runs in the last two innings to win. It was the first time the Indians won a game despite committing five errors since the 1996 team did it.
Mitch Talbot, though he certainly wasn't helped by the bad defense behind him, nibbled way too much for the lineup he was pitching to. While he did limit the damage to three runs when it could have been much more, it seemed to me he was giving the Royals hitters way too much credit. He has a lower-90s fastball and some nice off-speed pitches, yet he seemed to throwing like Paul Byrd. The difference being that (a) Byrd actually had a BP fastball and knew it, and (b) Byrd had exceptional command of his pitches. Since the All-Star Break (not counting his injury-shortened start against New York), Mitch has not been able to last six innings in each of his six starts in marked contrast to the first half of the season (6+ IP in 11 of 15 starts).
Tonight, though the bullpen picked up the slack, not allowing a run after Talbot left. Tony Sipp got out of the fifth inning, and Justin Germano, Rafael Perez, and Chris Perez each pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings each.
The comeback started with a fantastic at-bat from an unlikely source. Matt LaPorta, who has looked utterly lost at the plate for the past two weeks, hit the 13th pitch of his at-bat against Royals starter Kyle Davies into center field to plate the first run of the game with one out in the eighth. Kansas City was two outs away from getting the game to Joakim Soria, and before LaPorta stepped to the plate, Davies was in good shape with his pitch count. After the LaPorta hit, Davies was near the end of his rope, and the Indians were now bringing the tying run to the plate. After Jason Donald followed with a single, Blake Wood was brought in, and the Indians offense exploded, scoring four more times in the inning.
Cleveland added two more runs in the ninth, but lost Michael Brantley to an ankle injury. Brantley grounded what would have been a base hit up the middle, but as he pivoted to run to first base, he severely twisted his ankle and collapsed in the batter's box. If the injury is serious, it would be terrible timing, as Brantley has been fantastic since returning from Columbus; in the month of August, he's hitting .333/.400/.511 (51 PA).
UPDATE: Castrovince is saying that X-Rays on Brantley's ankle were negative, and that he's day-to-day (H/T to bentausig).
UPDATE, PART II: Can't believe I forgot this. Last night's electronic pep talk didn't work, as Andy Marte made an error after being inserted for defensive purposes. The saga continues.

X-rays on Brantley’s ankle were negative.
Unfortunately, it was his historically tender left ankle – his Achilles’ Heel, in a sense.

Hoynes:
Today is the deadline for the Indians to acquire a player from the Yankees to complete the Kearns deal. Look for it to be a minor-league pitcher.
I have been quite excited for this. Surprised we haven’t heard any names thrown around yet, usually we had a general idea of who the PTBNL would be.

2 names have been rumored: Melky Mesa (OF) and Shaeffer Hall (LHP) both are in A ball. Mesa looks like Abner Abreu part 2 and Hall is another soft tossing lefty with good control.
Funny, Mesa is an Abreu clone, except that he’s already 23. AA is just 21 (although Abreu’s walk rate is half of Mesa crappy walk rate).

Yeah, and there’s been some discussion that Mesa might actually be a minor league free agent after the season, but that’s still somewhat unclear.
However, getting anyone with relatively high upside for Kearns is a bonus imo.
Tony IPI claims on Twitter that Shapiro is in Columbus watching Scranton play, and thinks the player will be selected from that team.

But then again, he could just be in Columbus because Foreigner is singing the national anthem.

One thing that has always disturbed me since I moved back to CLE is that whenever I stumble across an oldies station, I am invariably listening to Boston. Boston?! They $ucked even when they were “good”!
Easy, man. Boston’s Tom Scholz and Jamie Faar are Toledo’s native sons. We didn’t have much growing up … but we always had those guys. And Katie Holmes.
My primitive mind can't grasp these concepts.
Didn’t even realize he spent time in Toledo. Toledoans only recognize their low-culture heroes, though. I failed to mention the finalist from this year’s American Idol and long-time NBA journeyman Jim Jackson. Billy Joel autographed a hot dog bun that is on the wall at Tony Packos. So he at least was in the area once. We have that going for us. Which is nice.
My primitive mind can't grasp these concepts.
I don’t think we get many spectacular choices when it comes to a PTBNL for Kearns.

We should get more than we got for Peralta. Cheaper and was hitting better.

I don’t think it’s fair to say Laporta has looked ‘utterly lost’ in his latest chunk of AB’s. He’s had 4 K’s and 4 BB’s during that time.
I mean, there was a stretch in 30 days of April/May where he struck out every 3rd AB.
However, it is totally fair to say he looked utterly lost at 1b last night, with a really egregious throwing error that plated a run and a non-throwing non-error that prolonged an inning for Raffy Perez.

He didn’t want to crush Chris Gimenez with the full awesomeness of his normal mighty high five – we only have two catchers on the roster. He was just thinking of his team.

This will sound oldmanish, but can’t Acta order his players to be a little more supportive? There’s a reason that young players in every sport are told to cheer their teammates on after mistakes.
Yeah, I know its just human emotion and these guys are adults, but seeing Carmona and Perez pout after Marte’s mistake and Gator4got doesn’t help. Turn that frown around, slap someone on the butt, and tell them you’ve got their back.
Team work is a often a silly little exercise in forced entusiasm, but it can have a real effect. I think.
I disagree. Those sorts of mistakes are inexcusable. Pitchers have every right to be pissed at this appalling infield.
So would you also say that infielders have every right to react in the same manner when the pitcher makes a horrible pitch and it gets hit 450 feet?
Come on, four billion!
No. I generally would agree that it is impolite for a pitcher—say Dave Stieb—to throw a hissy fit when somebody makes an error. And I generally would agree that a player should control his emotions on the field. But this infield is historically lame. I understand the pitcher’s frustations. It’s not as if they’re compensating for their appalling play with their bats.
Can you back up the “historically lame” quote with numbers?
by JulioBernazard on Aug 20, 2010 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Depends how you define “historically.” In terms of fielding, history changes. Errors have declined dramatically over time. The postwar record is the Senators in 1946 with 211. The Padres committed 145 in 2001. The Indians have committed 88 errors in 121 games, fifth worse in the majors and the worst in the AL.
I wouldn’t say that being fifth worst in the majors would qualify as historically bad. I think that phrase should only be used to describe once-a-generation kind of suckitude.

How about I change “historically lame” to “wretched” or “intolerably pathetic,” or “excruciatingly deficient,” or “flat-out lousy,” or “crappy”?
I didn’t mean to imply that our defense wasn’t bad; I was just letting you know what I thought “historically bad” meant.

I too understand the pitchers’ frustrations, but this is the same infield that has had to stand behind guys like David Huff and Hector Ambriz all year without having a tantrum. Go here and un-check the “hide non-qualifiers” box. We’ve had some guys giving up HR at a rate that is every bit as “historically bad” as our infield defense. The cloak of courtesy should cover both pitchers and fielders equally.
Come on, four billion!
I am all for civility, but maybe the fielders need to toss their gloves up in the air after Huff walks another batter. I guess I don’t condone pitchers’ losing their marbles, but I can understand it. Just as I can understand the frustration of fielders with a pitching staff second-worst in the majors (and worst in the AL) with 446 walks.
Also, couldn’t the FO guy in charge of closely monitoring the players’ tweets just check in on Hoynes now and then?
If those are in fact meant to be texts and not tweets, does anyone else find it odd that he signs every text with -Love Paul?
