Santana and Hafner to DL; Huff and Marson Recalled
Lastoria reports Marson up to take Santana's spot and Huff takes Hafner's. The news on Santana's knee is that it is a "sprain". Anyone know how serious a knee sprain is?
Update: Anthony Castrovince says the detailed diagnosis is a "High grade sprain of the LCL," and that no timetable has been set for Santana's return as of yet. (Ryan)

Hoynes says:
Tests show high grade strain of LCL and hyperextension of left knee. Surgery still a possibility.

Yeah, all I know about knees is that the ACL is the worst one to sprain or tear; I don’t know what an LCL sprain entails.
ell, a tear of the LCL is not nearly as bad. I’m not sure exactly but I know tears of the ligaments besides the ACL usually only keep people out somewhere from a couple weeks to a couple months.
not sure why he would need surgery on a sprain, unless they don’t think it would heal and would like to replace it.
I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough.
google tells me that “sprain” and “tear” get used interchangeably, but that sprain usually means some fibers and tear means most/all. BUT when talking about grades, a high grade would seem to constitute the use of the word tear.
Yeah typically a “high-grade sprain” of anything implies that much of the ligament is torn. A sprain by definition mean that some degree of ligament tissue is torn, just how much constitutes what grade is up to the ortho/radiologist.
And I’ve never run into a patient with an isolated LCL tear, so really can’t speak to it.

So how seriously do the Indians consider cutting Hafner this winter? He’s owed $28.75 million over the next two years, including the buyout. I’m not sure how badly we need the roster spot, but it would be nice to have more flexibility. Getting Santana and Choo some starts at DH would be beneficial, considering recent events.
We’ll see how painful the roster choices really get. They were expected to be bad last winter, but no damage done.
I expect it’ll take another bad/injured half-season for him to get released.

We don’t exactly have a ton of major league-ready bats in the minors pounding down the door, do we?
by JulioBernazard on Aug 3, 2010 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Does anyone have that?
Weglarz is pounding about as well as anyone in the minors, especially given his age.

Why cut Pronk and keep paying him? Are ABs that hard to find for the upcoming crop?
by JulioBernazard on Aug 4, 2010 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t think it would be as much an AB reason but more of a roster spot reason. For example, somebody is out of options, want to take a rule V guy, or carry a larger bullpen.
We have to pay him regardless and it seems increasingly clearer that he is not going to contribute much if we keep him. He is still a somewhat productive hitter, but he hasn’t cracked the 400 plate appearance mark since ‘07, doesn’t play the field, and can’t hit lefties. Also, factor in that he’ll be another year older next season and I see that player as very marginal.

Surgery is a possibility for #Indians C Carlos Santana. Should know more later this week. http://bit.ly/9e1PMf

I hope this doesn’t come off as in bad taste, but if he were to start 2011 on the DL, he’s still accumulating service time right?
I had an LCL sprain, but I don’t know how “severe” it was. High grade means it’s a tear. Mine wasn’t that bad, so I just did RICE for 6 weeks. Well, ICE for 6 weeks – I started playing sports again after less than a month, with a knee brace.
This was my experience, too. Mine came from zero contact injury, just overuse (tried to run two marathons in 6 weeks, and was far from fit enough to do it). I actually did a bit of PT, and was considered briefly for surgery, but an MRI showed that it was likely to heal without if I played it safe.
I didn’t run again for about 4 months, though I was back in the pool swimming in a month.
Hopefully he recovers fully; I’m less concerned about the time frame than I am of him being a career .266 hitter with medium power and forever wondering, “What if?”
Il faut d'abord durer.
What if what?
Are you saying you’re worried that he’s played his last game so his career average will be stuck on .266? I think that’s quite an exaggeration, but if it were true, that least of our worries is how his career batting average looks.

I don’t even care if his career average is .266. He’s much more of a power hitter than Victor was.

I think he’s saying he’s worried that Carlos never gets to that next level of awesome.

Ray Fosse pre-All Star/Pete Rose collision OPS+ 124;
post collision 98, 95, 85, 66, 10(!), 110, 91, 95
Now the 124 may have been an aberation, but stil, the guy never was the same afterward.

Super-depressing (but not at all irrelevant) post. Not that this injury will necessarily wreck Santana’s career, but the mere possibility that he could join that grim group of phenoms whose careers were unceremoniously knocked off course at an early stage bums me out so much.

Whoops but then my wife (doctor) said he’ll be fine. But he’ll be out the rest of the season, especially if he requires surgery.
If he doesn’t require surgery, he probably still needs at least a few months of rehab given that he has such a squatting-intensive job.
If he was her patient, she would say it’s better to get this fixed well before going back to playing soon given how much work is required for the job. But she guesses she feels that way about all athletes, and that’s not always how it works.
She’s not an orthopedist, but her sense is that the LCL is a somewhat minor ligament and you can rehab it, so it’s not as complicated to repair.
But a high-grade sprain basically means a tear, and high-grade injuries usually require surgery. The patient’s return to full weight-bearing should be gradual over the course of four weeks. With proper treatment, the prognosis for LCL injuries is good-to-excellent. Long story short, he won’t be able to walk for a month. He may also need a cast after the surgery, assuming he undergoes one. In that case, six months is a reasonable expectation. So February. Just in time for pitchers and catchers.
If he doesn’t need surgery, he’ll still need a minimum of ten weeks of rehab. Either way, expect a full recovery in time for next season.

6 months would be quite a long time. I took 6 to go from tear to high jumping for my ACL, I would assume LCL isn’t as bad.

6 from an ACL is also relatively quick. For professional athletes, it seems like its usually 6-9 months until they are fully at 100%. 6 months seems like a best case scenario for an ACL…I have heard some taking almost a year to get back to 100%. Maybe 6 months would be worst case scenario for an LCL.

oh yeah, it definitely takes longer than 6 months to get back to where it was, but he could easily be playing before its as strong as it was.

thats true…he could play. I do think however 6 months on the LCL might be more of a worst case scenario. I was looking up and have seen cases that take only 3-4 months…but thats on the quicker side.

I am honestly curious if this injury will get him out from behind the plate. If not completely, then frequently.
I don’t think so, unless the team was already planning to move him. There’s no reason to expect him to reinjure the knee once he returns – it’s not a chronic condition – so unless they’re just plain freaked out it wouldn’t make a lot of practical sense.

Acta’s has said that he will procreate during rehab, in an effort to produce a Carlos Jr. who in four years will run around the bases and copy his father’s swing to a tee, delighting the beat writers to no end.

the injury really isn’t something that should have a lasting impact on his playing career. he might need an extra day’s rest every now and again or DH a little more, but if he gets surgery, the new ligament will be identical to the old one, it will even be living tissue.

Maybe he isn’t, but his “YAY” coupled to mentioning how they performed in the big leagues reflects use of sarcasm, however rare it might be for him to do so (I really have no idea how often he is sarcastic).

Exactly. Just because I don’t use sarcasm that much, doesn’t mean I never do. I use it a little less on the internet because my sarcasm has always been pretty dry (and comes across badly in written word).
I guess you got it. I figured mentioning their ‘stellar performance’ in the majors would give it away.
