Game 107: Red Sox 3, Indians 1
The Indians placed Travis Hafner and Carlos Santana on the Disabled List before the game, further weakening an already punchless lineup. Of the nine starters tonight, seven spent at least some time with the Clippers this season. Shelley Duncan served as the cleanup hitter, with Jordan Brown protecting him. Trevor Crowe was the leadoff hitter, Luis Valbuena the seventh hitter, with Jayson Nix and Lou Marson rounding out the lineup. Not surprisingly, this lineup managed three hits against Josh Beckett and Jonathan Papelbon. Normally this would make for a rather dull baseball game, especially when Boston trotted out their own B squad thanks to injuries and the like, but there was a bench-clearing fracas to liven things up.
The whole thing started when Josh Beckett nailed first Shelley Duncan, who had collected four hits the previous evening, then Shin-Soo Choo, who had singled in the first inning. Both pitches were fastballs, not breaking balls gone astray, and Beckett was anything but wild this evening, striking out eight and walking none. I'm very confident that both pitches were thrown and located intentionally. Why Beckett would bother trying to intimidate this particular lineup is beyond me, though after he hit Choo in the third, not a single Indian would reach base the rest of the evening.
Indians starter David Huff didn't attempt to retaliate, giving up three runs on two home runs in 5.1 innings. Huff went to the minors to work on his command, but he didn't seem a different pitcher. Against a decimated Boston lineup, he allowed 9 base runners, including two walks, and struck out two. He'll be getting more starts because the Indians don't have a lot of other options, but he's not going to last very long in the rotation however weak the starting depth is if he continues to pitch like this.
Justin Germano, pitching in his second game with the Indians, was the first Cleveland pitcher to punch back, throwing behind David Ortiz in the seventh. Nothing came of that, but when Jensen Lewis threw behind Adrian Beltre in the eighth, there was no longer mistaking the intent. Beltre started to walk towards the mound, and both benches cleared. Heated words were exchanged, including between Boston manager Terry Francona and Indians third base coach Steve Smith, and Josh Beckett, safely restrained by his teammates, told the Indians exactly what he thought of them. If Beckett had pulled that stunt under National League rules, he would have been nailed in his first at-bat after hitting Choo in the knee, but in the American League, the battles must be fought by proxy. Pedro Martinez reveled in having his teammates fight the battles he instigated, and Beckett has memorized his playbook.
Come to think of it, it's too bad his teammates restrained him.

Masterful writeup- again. Beckett looked unhinged – he had the temper of a man who knows he’s at fault.

In honor of Jensen Lewis, I’ve updated my avatar. I had seen parts of the first half of the game, and went out to grab some dinner. While out, I was hoping someone would step up and do what needed to be done. Germano made a fine effort, but Lewis finished it off. The only reason he doesn’t get an A+ is because he narrowly missed planting one between Beltre’s numbers. He got ejected and will get suspended, but it needed to be done.
On the bright side, when they showed the Red Sox coming out of the dugout I was able to see my very first Douchebag Parade.

A heated Hamilton calling Beckett a “punk” was the highlight for me.

Unfortunately the “punk” part isn’t on here, but this highlight package features Hamilton accusing Beckett of starting the whole thing. Fight starts at the 50 second mark, “8-3 Highlights.”

Another note – I went back and looked to see if I could see Chris Perez anywhere. Sure enough, he was being restrained while screaming at Beckett. Just like I thought. Pure rage!

He came flying in out of nowhere, too. And he said something pretty good, because you can see two guys (one might be Cameron) turn around at the same time. I think Victor might have ended up grabbing him, though the replay I saw wasn’t clear.

I know he’s no Jayson Nix, but what more does Andy Marte have to do to get some consecutive starts at third base?
The way this organization has (mis)handled him from the get-go is disgusting.
Yeah, I know, he’s a bust, but you would think this would be the only time management would deem fit to give him a good look before he’s gone.
Blake: Thanks to you, I am damaged beyond repair!!
I believe that, at this point, in order to get consecutive starts at third base Andy Marte would have to be with another organization. If the Indians aren’t giving him at bats now, it’s likely they never will.

WHAT MORE DOES HE HAVE TO DO?
Seriously though, even Jordan Brown is given at bats over Marte.

According to the “what has he shown in limited at bats crowd” Brown should be playing once or twice a week for the rest of the season.

maybe they didn’t last long enough, but Marte did get two shots at playing every day.
I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough.
What the Red Sox are saying to justify their “outrage”
"If you’re going to retaliate and you feel like you want to protect your players, we know how this game goes, and we would respect it if you’d have got the job done in the first or second attempt,’’ Bill Hall said. "But five attempts is a little too much. You’ve got balls flying over people’s heads. That’s a danger to our careers.
"So if you’re going to do it, get the job done the right way, and get it done as quick as possible. You can’t keep trying in the same game to retaliate. Obviously we got a little fed up with that.’’
Asked if there could be a resumption of hostilities, Hall said, "You never know.’’
Beckett, who was ejected along with Lewis and Indians third base coach Steve Smith, would only say after the game, "I thought their players had a pretty good feel for the game.’’
"I thought maybe they were taking some liberties,’’ said Terry Francona, who nearly precipitated a second round as he joined pitching coach John Farrell in yelling at Smith. "Everybody has their own opinion. Sometimes it gets hot.’’

I think Germano actually tried twice against Ortiz…his first one wasn’t far enough in, and the second one was behind him.
There were a couple of others that were close (at least one from Huff), but based on the flow of the game they did not look intentional at all. So I can see where they thought three were intentional, but am not sure how they got to five.
Youkilis was also yelling about “five” – so I think this is their issue. But ask Choo if those three (or five) are equal to the one he took off the kneecap.
Plus the odd jump kick slide from yesterday that took at our star prospect.

I really wish they had just kept throwing. Why not? After Lewis is tossed, bring in Ambriz and aim for the hip.

as someone said in the game thread, I wish someone would just punch Beckett in the face and take the suspension. Jordan Brown, I’m looking at you.

Yea and if he goes 3-3 tonight he will be hitting .285. Listen I dont think he is anything special but give the guy a chance not like we have anyone pushing him for playng time
if I go 2-2 tonight, I will be hitting 1.000 and still completely suck because I am no good, it’s an idiot stat, and it’s a small sample.
Right that is what I was trying to say give the guys sometime and then pass judgement. We have had a lot of guys come up and not light up the world
I can’t believe a joke post produced all this “serious” discussion of Jordan Brown. Jordan Brown is not likely to be a significant part of the Indians future. He plays 1B (sort of), to which the far more valuable Matt LaPorta has a claim. If he DH’s, we have a DH with little power, not exactly what you want if you’re building a contender. If he plays LF, it’s an admission that Michael Brantley isn’t ready or is a bust, which bodes ill for the future of the team. As a back up outfielder, he’s of limited value since he can’t play center and isn’t a good fielder. He’s playing now because Hafner is hurt.
What infuriates me is that, if Brown is “worth a look,” why isn’t Marte. Marte’s positional value to the team is much greater (he can play 3B as well as 1B and has been a good to excellent fielder in the past). In his most recent minor league year, at basically the same age, he posted superior numbers to Brown (more homers, better OPS), and did so despite having fewer AB’s and having to overcome the organization’s obvious reservations about him.
I watch the games and I can see that Marte is not Albert Pujols. But, I honestly dont understand how they are dealing with him and why Jordan Brown is playing ahead of him.
'If I'm not here, 'I'll be somewhere else.'' Andy Marte
In 449 minor league games, he’s only appeared in the OF in 138 of them. For a guy with that much defensive question marks already floating around, it’s pretty clear that’s not a real position for him.
Still, all that said, if he punched out Beckett, I’d be joining his bandwagon.

It not like Brantley and Crowe dont ground out to 2B all the time. I also dont think in the end he will not be any worse then Hafner. I guess its much to do about nothing he wont be here next year

A-Rod still hit 600 home runs quicker than anyone in history. Is the HR itself learning deficient?

Johnny’s inside-the-parker a few weeks ago had the same credibility as many of those 600, as far as I’m concerned. No, actually more.

I get the significance of it. But the ’roids taint it for me. Yes, he took them for 3 out of a 17 year career. But still…
Yeah, but what are you going to do? Take everyone off the list except Aaron and Ruth? Aaron didn’t play against African-Americans or Latinos, and Aaron was probably on greenies at least once—or am I early on the amphetamine era?
No one ever hit a home run on a level playing field.
Steel Nick
Pretty sure you meant Ruth didn’t play against AAs or Latinos. But then again, there were only 8 American League teams when Ruth played and not 14.
Resident LGT results-oriented boob.
Aaron definitely played at least part of career during the greenies era. It was Mays that helped popularize them, I believe.

Steroids are no more illegal than amphetamines or, for that matter, employment discrimination based on race.
I believe the employment discrimination based on race began with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a good deal of time after African American players were playing the Major Leagues. I am not debating what should have been law, just merely what was the law at the time.
As for amphetamines, I am not sure, were they illegal when widespread use in baseball first occurred?
