Kipnis has been amazing offensively this year. Still not sure how his defense is developing, but most reports seem to indicate he will stick at 2nd.

I wouldn’t rank him ahead of The Chiz just yet, but he’s definately a top 5 prospect for us this year.

by JP_Frost on Aug 5, 2010 12:49 PM EDT reply actions

Hardly objective but :

He has very quickly become someone we think that can become an above average defender at a middle infield position -RAtkins via Lastoria

by stuart dean on Aug 5, 2010 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I disregard anything RAtkins says. In the middle of the 2009 season, I recall him saying something about Beau Mills having a solid year…

by silverbackAXP on Aug 5, 2010 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

There is a difference between having a solid year and having Major League potential.

Don’t look now but Mills has been hot since early July (hitting .324 with 38% of his hits for extra bases). I wonder if he can keep it up through seasons end and reestablish himself as a prospect…

by MTF on Aug 5, 2010 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I noticed that in spite of trying not to look.

by stuart dean on Aug 5, 2010 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I never got excited about mills. When I look at firstinning daily report, he’s like a mahoning valley position player to me.

Is it just me or is his picture hilarious in a creepy sort of way?

by stuart dean on Aug 5, 2010 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe it’s the close-set eyes but he does look pretty creepy. I can take that, though, if he keeps smashing the XBH’s.

by MTF on Aug 5, 2010 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I actually think he looks like the young Roger Clemens. Wonder if Clemens and Brad Mills were teammates at any point, like 24 years ago.

House has to cut his walk rate in half.

Phelps has been hitting really well in Columbus, only 3 months older than Kipnis. Are we forgetting about Phelps too much with how well Kipnis has been playing?

by Roger Dorn on Aug 5, 2010 1:51 PM EDT reply actions

Phelps strikes me as a player with solid tools, but not much more. Kipnis has more star-ability imo. That said, Phelps is having a very good year and it’s a nice problem to have. Ultimately I think Phelps becomes a back up infielder or trade bait though.

by JP_Frost on Aug 5, 2010 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, you’ve got to color Phelps with his more mediocre stints at Akron last year and this year. The difference is power between the two puts Phelps clearly 2nd to Kipnis, in my mind.

by dgcambridge on Aug 5, 2010 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s an interesting guy, it’s just his line seems to be very much driven by the fact that his BABIP is very high right now. I think we need to make sure that it’s sustainable before we get too excited. He doesn’t walk that much or hit for a ton of power to overlook the possibility of a BABIP drop.

by Joe. on Aug 5, 2010 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions

He is slugging .537 in Columbus which is above his numbers at every other level. Not a lot of home run power, but he has to be getting extra base hits to get this kind of Slg %. I again am left to wonder if the Columbus ballpark is helping out our AAA guys.

Luck-adjusted, his Columbus line is .304 / .383. / .489, which is excellent across the board.

by Jay on Aug 5, 2010 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Luck adjusted?

by Joe. on Aug 6, 2010 1:18 AM EDT up reply actions

babip adjusted I guess.

by JP_Frost on Aug 6, 2010 2:12 AM EDT up reply actions

How can you adjust BABIP for hitters?

LGT's resident moderate Yankee hating fan.

by Joe. on Aug 6, 2010 4:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I believe it’s a regression, but I can tell you that it does not make everyone’s BABIP the same. Here’s something crazy: The formula thinks that Goedert has been hitting into some BAD luck.

by Jay on Aug 6, 2010 9:05 AM EDT up reply actions

that’s crazy, but I hope it’s true.

I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough.

by notthatnoise on Aug 6, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe, but our Columbus hitters did pretty good on the road in Fenway last night. Spend time at Columbus, learn how to hit.

Hodges is back. The potential nightmare of JBrown Hodges and McBride on the same 25 man lives!

I didn’t realize that Toregas is out for the season. Too bad, he might have had more MLB AB’s this year.

by Toxicadam on Aug 5, 2010 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

so, i asked castro. was this all to circumvent using up his “outrighted to AAA” after we removed him from the 40?

by Brick. on Aug 5, 2010 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Doubtful, but that is the net effect.

by Jay on Aug 5, 2010 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

can Toregas fit into this nightmare?

by silverbackAXP on Aug 5, 2010 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Gimenez already does.

by Voltaire on Aug 5, 2010 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

This is something I have been thinking about for a while now: any chance we move Kipnis back to CF? We are suddenly overflowing with MI prospects and quite low on guys that can play CF.

LGT's resident moderate Yankee hating fan.

by Joe. on Aug 5, 2010 2:51 PM EDT reply actions

I think this will always be a possibility, but will depend solely on need.

Anything in life is possible, except for skiing through revolving doors.

by MooneysRebellion on Aug 5, 2010 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Not enough range to play center, Kipnis was moved to second because he didn’t project to hit enough at a corner OF spot.

by larzko on Aug 5, 2010 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah, I thought it was based off of organizational need. In that case, he stays at 2b.

I am not junkballer. For one thing, I don’t know as much about baseball.

by Jay on Aug 6, 2010 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

What do you think we do with LeVon Washington, if and when he signs? I saw some vids of him hitting recently. I like the eccentric batting stance.

by jhon on Aug 5, 2010 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I think we keep him at 2B and then wait three years to see if there’s any reason to move him or anyone else.

by Jay on Aug 5, 2010 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

If his shoulder fully heals I’m in favor of letting him play CF. That’s a pretty big if though.

by JP_Frost on Aug 5, 2010 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I know it’s only Kinston, but Marty Popham threw 5 scoreless innings with 3 hits, 10K and 1 BB yesterday. Pretty impressive outing. Then again if the other A+ teams hit like ours does….. but still.
