I’m genuinely excited about him as opposed to most other pitchers we’ve thrown out there.

At least he’s got real upside, is in the majors, and isn’t hurt.

I haven’t actually watched a game in months, but I really am sick of seeing Nix’s name in the boxscore.

Daniel Norris. Left-handed pitcher out of Science Hill High School in Johnson City, TN.
I’ve seen him pitch 3 times. Guy can bring it. Low to mid 90’s fastball.
The Once and Future King
Jeremy Hermida. No, Brandon Morrow. Playing time for Andy Marte.
Sorry, wait, got confused for a second. Mixing up my wish lists.

2! 2 baserunners! Ah. Ah. Ah.

Hafner has been a doubles machine as of late, it seems. It’d be nice if he started going yard again.
sure it’d be nice, but I’ll settle for doubles with this lineup.
I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough.

I like this outing from CC, but he’s throwing a lot of pitches.

he’s almost at 70 pitches through 4 innings. he’ll be lucky to go six.

I guess if Nix is at third and Duncan is in left, any ball hit down the line is going to be a triple.
Steel Nick
Hunter’s last two years have been his career highs in OBP.
Just pointing that out. Odd at 33 and 34.
Steel Nick
Give him a couple of years.

Is that? I would assume a player’s approach would have a chance to get better as he got older. I have no evidence for this.
Come on, four billion!
Well it jumped 30 points since his age-31 season, so I don’t know. Doesn’t look like his power has dipped. He’s not walking a whole hell of a lot more, but his batting average is up too.
Shrug.

Ed Mujica?

I don’t think anyone saw that coming, did they? I wasn’t one of them, but plenty of people lamented the loss of Breslow.
Steel Nick
That’s true. Didn’t wedge never use breslow because he was the last pitcher on the roster? Mujica at least got bombed here before leaving.

Ed Moo ran himself outta here by his performance. Breslow’s stay with us was inexplicably short and he was barely used.
True.

The term [Charley horse] may date back to American slang of the 1880s, possibly from the pitcher Charlie “Old Hoss” Radbourn who is said to have suffered from cramps.8 Another story mentions a horse named Charley that used to work at Comiskey Park, the Chicago White Sox’s baseball stadium. In those days, an old, retired horse was often called “Charlie.”
well, ok. That’s kinda cool.
Nice outing for Carrasco.
Love it.

He and Valbuena have really done an impressive job of making one trade look as horrible as possible. Total team effort.
I never thought about it like that. Wow, that’s depressing. All for Franklin Gutierrez, now I feel sad.
The Once and Future King
if it is any consolation, Gutierrez hasn’t exactly followed up his great 2009 with an equally fantastic 2010
So, is Tony Sipp a very good pitcher who’s learning the ropes, or is he just a talented guy who’s not very consistent?
Yeah, I think you might be right, but I’m going to hold out for one more year. I’m optimistically expecting a Raffy Perez-like ascent to the top of the league’s lefty setup men. This is based on nothing. I’ll be disappointed. I take it all back, he’s a left-handed Jensen Lewis!
I would say Sipp has had a great year with the exception of a 7-appearance stretch where he basically couldn’t get an out and forgot how to pitch. Other than those 7 appearances, he’s been pretty solid. A little too many walks, but pretty solid relief work.

Then again, I’m not accounting for inherited runs, so I’m not sure how much worse he has performed if you factor those in.

How many of those were in the 7 appearance-span?

Oh, I see that 5 of the homeruns he has allowed were over that 7 appearance span where he looked like a little leaguer. (Actually, 4 of them were across 3 straight games)
That said, he did give up 4 homers in August. But I think outside of that short span of ineptitude, he really has been pretty solid.

Yep. I’ll accept the home runs based on the following – they’ve all been solo shots. He’s being aggressive with the bases empty. As his confidence and experience grows he’ll be better about pitching around guys like Hunter.
The HR’s aren’t that big of a deal. He is getting groundballs, at least.
LGT's resident moderate Yankee hating fan.
So, if Knapp-time actually happens, and CC is good, Donald holds onto a league-average 2B, and Marson is a great defensive back-up C, we win the trade, right?
I think if Valbuena doesn’t show something in this next month, he’s done. We’re too loaded at the MI spots to let give AB’s to a guy that can’t field or hit.
LGT's resident moderate Yankee hating fan.
But why are we going to send Phelps back to AAA next year? He is clearly done there.
LGT's resident moderate Yankee hating fan.
53 games in Double-A — 743 OPS
66 games in Triple-A — 892 OPS
I am not convinced that the Triple-A numbers are entirely for real, or that he is done with the minors. It’s only 66 games, and his overall season isn’t as good as Jason Donald’s 2008.
In addition, they may start giving him some reps at 3B next season.
You mean the season where Donald was the same age but at AA?
LGT's resident moderate Yankee hating fan.
Right. And not getting pushed to AAA artificially because a better prospect was coming up behind him.
Is that really why?

Of course it was. They were less concerned about whether Phelps would be overmatched than they were about stunting Kipnis’ development by keeping him at Kinston. Of course it worked out beautifully, and Phelps has really forced his way into a more significant discussion.
Oh, I didn’t realize they would “artificially” advance a player (based on another player’s success). In a situation like that, I would have thought they would simply promote the one who earned it (Kipnis), and then switch Phelps’ position giving him reps at other positions and getting some time at DH while Kipnis is regular 2b.

It’s rarely all about one player, but rather about many players and the best available option. In some other instance, depending on other players they could plug in at 2B-AAA or UT-AA, they may have done exactly what you wrote. In this instance, promoting Phelps and letting him start at 2B was deemed the best choice. It is fairly clear, however, that Phelps did not exactly hit his way out of Akron.
I see. I guess you can’t get to the majors that way, though. Will be interesting to see how things go next year.

So if Marte is your late-inning defensive replacement, you admit he’s the better defender…

we’re 1 game ahead of KC, 4 games back of baltimore, 4 games ahead of nationals, but pittsburgh is running away with it and is ahead of everyone. 46-91 – they are almost 10 games ahead of us.
