Who are your picks for the majors awards this year (MVP, Cy Young)?
Mine:
AL MVP: Josh Hamilton
NL MVP: Joey Votto
AL Cy Young: Felix Hernandez
NL Cy Young: Roy Halladay
AL MVP: Miggy
NL MVP: Votto
AL Cy Young: Felix
NL Cy Young: Wainwright I guess but I’ve been flip flopping
There’s some serious competition in the NL for the CY Young award. Wainwright, Halladay, Johnson, Jimenez, even Tim Hudson has been great.
I’ve been going back and forth on Miggy and Hamilton. Ultimately the positional difference did it for me, but it’s very close imo.
So listening and also enjoying the new Linkin Park and Weezer CDs had me wondering what year it was earlier today.
Weezer is pretty darned prolific

I haven’t thought much of any of their music since Maladroit. Seems like there has only been a couple good songs on each of their last three or so albums.
Maladroit left a lot to be desired in it’s own right. I’m of the opinion that they peaked with Pinkerton, but I feel I’m probably in the minority on that.
I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough.
That opinion is more widespread than you think. I’d be inclined to agree but this new one is pretty enjoyable for the most part.
I just don’t know if I can do it anymore. The severe disappointment that has been weezer since the Green Album may have ruined them for me forever.
I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough.
I would at least recommend checking out the song Unspoken. Maybe the best Weezer song I’ve heard in years.
Hurley is the album? Not on iTunes until Sept 14

Varying degrees of good songs by album IMO.
Classic case of a band that screams out for a custom iTunes “Best of” playlist that is inevitably heavy with early material.

Choo’s agent Scott Boras tells the Cleveland Plain Dealer that his client could be signing an extension with the team this offseason. “Things have a way of working out with the good players,” Boras told MLB.com.
Just saw this on Yahoo in an article about Choo hoping to see his military commitment waived with a gold metal in the Asian Games.
An extension, or merely a buyout of his arbitration years? I won’t believe an extension until I see it, and I think often times the reporters who write these stories don’t know the difference.
I fervently watched that WBC final against China. I wonder if the Asian Games will be televised.

Everything about Tomlin screams AAAA, but he just won’t stop getting outs.
I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough.
Let’s see, 90 mph fastball just high out of the zone for ball 1.
Next pitch, 90 mph fastball just a little bit lower, right at the top of zone.
What could possible explain that pitch selection?
Is it strange that Tomlin and Gomez both have a better K/BB ratio than Masterson, Carmona, Westbrook, Talbot, Laffey or Huff?
somebody’s site, maybe Baseball Analysis, published their list of top 100 pitchers by K/100pitches (which is apparently a better measure than K/IP or K/PA). The Indians pitchers were pathetically represented.

Just Josh! Acta made the comment that Tomlin could prove a nice long man addition to the bullpen, and you can see why – he doesn’t have the stuff for 7+ innings.
But for 4 innings he pushed harder than he normally does, spotting a 92 mph fastball and breaking off a nice sharp curve. He just ran out of gas.
Just stopping by to mention the Partttttttay!
I love you man.

Already managing to save his job (i.e. in-the-box thinking in order to avoid criticism)? If so, that would suck.
they cut down crowe earlier in the game on a blown call at 2B. i’m not suggesting things even out, just that missed calls change things throughout the course of a game.
You know, the Indians being terrible I can handle, but the Aeros didn’t make the playoffs?! Now I’m pissed.

You know in terms of 5th starters, you could do a lot worse than Josh Tomlin.

I caught the first inning and a half, had my football draft, and now I’m back in. Quick game, it seems.
Tomlin threw a great curve early in the game. Did it show up any other time?
Also! A little disappointed that Marte’s Partay Bomb doesn’t get a huge reaction anymore.

If LaPorta didn’t suck so much he could put him in LF and Wegz at first. But left, I guess.

Bring in Pure Rage? I don’t believe in holding your best reliever until there’s a save situation.

If we had lost two games in Anaheim to a walk-off suicide squeeze, I would have … just … absolutely lost my shit.

I think it’s about time we won this bastard.

"Most players will tell you that even when they're 100%, they're not really 100% ... if that makes sense."
No, you just bring in another position player to play first, move Marte to pitcher … that’s really it.
we seem to be out of those tonight, hafner is all that is left and they are saying he is unavailable
I bet it’s pretty funny being in that dugout for the last three innings, watching Ambriz drum his fingers on his knees and glancing at the bullpen phone.
Steel Nick
Watching the Angels feed. Guy speculated that Acta would walk Kendrick intentionally after the SB, with a 2-1 count and a lefty coming up. Anyone else see this as even a possibility?
I know it hasn’t hurt us, but I have an issue with Chris Perez not pitching yet. Even if there couldn’t possibly be an issues with him warming up and sitting back down repeatedly, we have gone 6 innings of a one-run or tie game without letting our best reliever pitch.
Germano threw only 12 pitches in this first inning.
Sipp faced the 8-9-1-2 hitters. Makes sense to save Rage for their best hitters.
Before that, it was only the 9th inning.
I get what you’re saying in concept, I just don’t see the really dumb moment not to have used Chris Perez in this specific game.
Joe Smith faced the 4-5-6 guys. Germano faced Rivera and then the top of the order. It absolutely makes sense to see Perez over either guy. They haven’t saved Perez for their best hitters, they’ve saved him for a ‘proven-closer’ situation.
You put Perez in the 9th when there may well be a 10th inning save? That would be an unconventional move. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but you’re asking the manager to mess with guys’ heads.
I know everyone is more afraid to admit this to themselves than possibly any other dark secret, but Nickelback is awesome.
Sigh.
I know, I know. Canadian, that weird growl-sing. The terrible critical reviews. It is THE most uncouth thing in the world to say you like Nickelback. But they’re one of the best selling artists of the 2000s, there crap sticks around for years and years, and it’s catchy.
It’s just super lame to admit it.
But they’re one of the best selling artists of the 2000s
Yeah, and just look at all of their similarly awesome top-selling peers!
--
"Most players will tell you that even when they're 100%, they're not really 100% ... if that makes sense."
Definitely true. There is SOME argument to be made for music that is popular to 10s of millions of Americans. Sure – tastes come and go. Even the skinny tie has seen its day. Doesn’t mean it wasn’t great at the time.
There is some argument to be made, but not necessarily a good one.
If I could remember a time when Nickelback was good, I’d admit it. I don’t think it ever happened.
Wow. Catching up with the thread … Nickleback? Jay is 100% right here. Even bands like Limp Bizkit were okay at a certain point; even if for about 5 minutes, and even if only for loud obnoxious dormroom purposes. Nickleback has never been anything but miserable.
Il faut d'abord durer.
No, it’s bad. If a lot of people like it, and it’s bad, it’s just a popular thing that’s bad.
Steel Nick
Eh, that’s not what the numbers say. They say that NB has hung around for a decade and been among its best selling artist. That takes many years of popularity.
The numbers also say that “Candle In The Wind 1997” is the greatest song ever written. Comment?
--
"Most players will tell you that even when they're 100%, they're not really 100% ... if that makes sense."
Again, you are equating popularity with something besides just plain popularity. The masses have been wrong before, and will be again, in areas more than just music.
“People like it so it’s good” is just an argument I can’t get behind, and it’s the only one you’ve used. We can end the discussion if that’s your reasoning.
Steel Nick
The masses aren’t even saying something is “good” when they buy it. They’re just saying they want it.
I went to see Ace Ventura in the theater, never for a moment believing it would be a good movie.
You didn’t like Ace Ventura??? Is this a joke?
My argument: not only has it had a decade of sustained popularity, its legitimately catchy music and gets crappy press just ‘cause we’re all too scared to look at the man and the mirror and admit: Nickelback rocks.
The idea being, there is (one of the biggest on record) an enormous wave of elitism bizzarely directed at Nickelback – and the “common-sense” taste police make you crazy for liking them. This law is rigidly enforced. Therefore, they are particularly difficult to admit to liking based entirely by this wave of elitism. Their true value is being obscured.
I can’t even believe that we’re arguing Nickelback, and that it’s lasting so long.
I gotta warn you, at the end of this argument, or the end of this game—both may be a while—Nickelback is still going to suck.

Not that it would make a bad analogy if not, but … how?
Il faut d'abord durer.
This not only assumes that Nickleback is art, but that ANY of those sitcoms are, too.
Il faut d'abord durer.
Semantics. Creative endeavor, whatever.
Its kinda like song lyrics. Poetically, none of them ever hold up without the music. It’s a three or four-minute format, everything changes.
I was about to say almost the same thing; I think that most good songs hold up as poetry if the lyrics have anything to do with the reason that its a good song.
Il faut d'abord durer.
Yeah, BBT can admittedly go both ways, I’m just not a fan and thought it was silly that the nerd from it one best supporting actor in a comedy over some (I feel) better qualified actors.
Has anyone seen the Youtube clip of a portion of Big Bang Theory with the laugh track removed? It’s extremely odd.
I’m sure this applies to all sitcoms, but a lot of jokes just fell completely flat.

Great point. There is no question that Britney Spears has released more memorable songs, not that this is high praise by any means.
This is also wrong. She doesn’t write all of her music and doesn’t choreograph all of her stage performances.
Phil Collins is totally safe through Hello I Must Be Going. I can look the other way on No Jacket Required, but after that he is like the Nickelback of Adult Contemporary.

I’m writing a press release for an artist right now, and we had a talk tonight about inserting Phil Collins as a comparable artist. I just love the boldness, because seriously, what young artist would do that? He’s not edgy, the record is fairly lushly produced, why run from it?
That’s part of my thinking, too. But the main idea is that the music press is obsessed with hipness, and there’s no point trying to convince them that this guy is hip, only that maybe his career is now “happening” regardless, ergo, may as well cover it.
I know this is hard. It’s hard to say you like small dogs. Its way tougher and cooler to like a big beast dog. But chihauhau’s are actually cute. Legally Blonde is actually funny. We adapt, grow stronger, faster.
That doesn’t even sound believable. (I believe you but it just doesn’t sound like it could possibly be true)

You guys ever read up on the guy who memorized the interactive board and beat the game? They never show that in Syndication.

Yeah, I don’t know what kind of person isn’t willing to watch her dancing around in her underwear in prison and then hanging out with Beyonce … but it ain’t me, 17 times.
It could be rap, where every video and all lyrics are the same. As for videos for Gaga and others, sometimes, I wonder if I’m too stupid to get an artistic message that’s being conveyed. Other times, I’m convinced the video really has nothing to do with the song. And all times, I’m convinced the lyrics have nothing to do with anything.
I’m not into religion, farming, or trucks, but I love me some country music. Sometimes I hear a song and I think — those are nice lyrics.
I’ve never said that about a rap song. But if we’re talking music videos, I guess I haven’t seen many country music videos. It’s strictly been a radio relationship since I moved west.
I think she can sing as well as anybody out there right now, but everything is so over-produced. What’s the point in having that voice if you’re going to autotune everything so that Britney Spears could have recorded your song?
When it was on the radio. I still can’t stand that garbage song. It’s the only one of hers I truly hate. Still think Just Dance was by far her best song, though Alejandro grew on me.

As long as we’re way off-topic, I’m in a fantasy football league full of Ravens fans where the first-time commissioner set 10 return yards = 1 point. We had our draft tonight. I did the math and realized that under these rules Josh Cribbs was the 3rd-leading scorer at receiver IN THE ENTIRE LEAGUE last year. I figured I could wait all day and draft the best receiver in the league at the end. Then some Ravens fan took him right before me in the 11th round. I feel like such an idiot.
I’m unclear on fantasy football rules. Do we drink now?

This is how you remind me… that Nickleback sucks, although I understand where Joeee’s coming from. I liked Hall and Oates and disco Rod Stewart well before it became ironically acceptable.
The problem I have with Nickleback is that they do in fact rock. They’re rockers. I never really got rock and roll. I’ll take the 80s disco anyday.
Glad to see GaGa getting some love around here.
Rod Stewart was cool for years, way before he was in any way laughable. Listen to him howl his way through Jeff Beck’s Truth sometime.

Whos more lame, Huey Lewis and the News (granted their talent is obvious to me even though I know essentially nothing about musical aptitudes and compositions) or Nickleback?
Perfect example. I don’t hate that band, but that song basically sucked … and yet was the kind of song, and hit at just the right moment, that could be a #1 hit. He had plenty of other hits that are kind obviously better songs.

I saw Rod Stewart in a little joint on E106th and Euclid called LaCave. He was singing with a group led by Jeff Beck. Pretty awsome stuff way back when.
Also! Stewart was pretty damn good wiht the Faces too!

I see that there is but it’s actually called LaCave du Vin, after a fancy place in France. The place I’m referring to was on E106th and Euclid across from two mostly black joints callled Little Milton’s and Brougham Sam’s. It was located in the basement in what had previously been a State Unemployment office and sat about 300 folks. At first it was a folky place with a $5 cover and $3 pitchers of 3.2% beer. I saw Judy Henski there early on . But later acts like the Velvet Underground and Terry Knight and the Pack (they became Grand Funk RR) played there. I saw Blood, Sweat and Tears play their first gig ever opening for Canned Heat. Saw Arlo Guthrie right after “Alice’s Restaurant” hit. Saw Linda Ronstadt with Stone Pony back when she was thin. Saw the Youngbloods with Jesse Colin Young (OSU grad) But here’s what I missed: Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Neil Young, Those are just a few of the bands I saw at LaCave. Here’s a website that’ll give you the real skinny.
