Cliff Lee couldn't hold a 4-0 lead, and the Cardinals pulled off a 5-4 road victory.

Francona not in ChiSox's picture; Rays' Martinez is - Yardbarker
According to Ken Rosenthal, Tampa Bench Coach Dave Martinez is at the top of Chicago's list of candidates with Tony Pena also a possibility. No mention of Sandy Alomar, who would be a logical candidate as well (played for the White Sox, lives in Chicago).

Tigers survive rain, dramatic ninth inning - SweetSpot Blog - ESPN
The Tigers pulled out a win in New York, and have wrested home-field advantage away from the Yankees with Justin Verlander going in Game 3. Because of the Game 1 suspension, the two teams will have to go with starters they weren't planning on using (Porcello and Burnett) for Game 4, so tonight's Verlander-Sabathia matchup will be crucial to both clubs.

Cards rally against Lee, even NLDS at a game each - MLB - Yahoo! Sports
Cliff Lee was staked to a 4-0 lead but was not able to hold it, allowing five runs on 12 hits, including an Albert Pujols seventh inning go-ahead single. So after the first weekend of playoff baseball, only one series (Milwaukee-Arizona) isn't tied.

So Valverde predicted two straight and a series win for Detroit. May he and the rest of his team get Garko’d.

Rather scared. Inquiring about dog.

I’m really looking forward to Valverde blowing a game. If karma had any validity, it would happen—soon.

by PBH on Oct 3, 2011 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I could wait a series.

Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.

by USSChoo on Oct 3, 2011 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Seriously. Are people really going to let Valverde’s perceived brashness (he may have been kidding anyway) supersede powerful loathing towards the Jackasses? Preposterous.

Evan Longoria giving him a Brad Lidge moment would be beautiful.

If somehow the Yankees could also lose this series, I’d be very happy.

Mulligan for Game 162, David Price. Here’s your chance.

FWIW, Gammons tweeted earlier today that the Indians brass are “worried” about Almoar leaving for the White Sox.

by FallsTribeFan on Oct 3, 2011 3:54 PM EDT reply actions

Rosenthal says Dave Martinez is top of the White Sox list.

I put more stock in Gammons, but saying the Tribe FO is worried isn’t the same as saying the White Sox have Sandy as their first choice, so they aren’t necessarily conflicting reports.

Great game at the Trop right now. An old fashioned duel between Lewis and Price.

And, the Rays bullpen implodes. No!

by johnf34 on Oct 3, 2011 7:28 PM EDT reply actions

Both Sabathia and Verlander with less-than-impressive lines through 3 innings of Game 3 – both have given up 2 runs, both have less than 2-1 strike-ball ratios, and Sabathia has walked 5 – the only reason he’s managed to give up just 2 runs is because he’s gotten 2 key DPs (one from Santiago in the 1st, keeping the Tigers scoreless; one from Cabrera in the 3rd that allowed the 2nd run to score, but the Tigers could have had a monster inning, since there were NO outs at that point).

Sabathia has handled the former Indians to this point – Martinez is 0-2 with a K and a GO to 3B, while Peralta is 0-1 with a GIDP.

Verlander, again, struggled in the 1st inning, giving up leadoff hits to both Jeter (single) and Granderson (RBI triple); he came back to strike out Cano for the first out, but A-Rod got a productive GO to SS to score the second run. Verlander has looked better of late, keeping the Yankees from doing too much (Gardner was erased on a GIDP by Jeter).

It’s likely both won’t go that long (I can’t see either going much over 100 pitches, if that), and Sabathia especially will be fortunate to go 5-6; Verlander MIGHT last 6-7. As was mentioned in the lead-in to this thread, the game is pivotal for both teams – Burnett and Porcello are both not-your-ideal starters, and whichever team beats the other team’s ace may have psychological edge, plus the fact that you’d rather be up 2-1 than down 2-1, especailly if you’re Detroit, being that Game 5 is at Yankee Stadium, and the fact that the Tigers were a better home team than road team, never mind the fact that Nova outdid Fister in Game 1 (2nd part of Game 1, that is).

The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.

by indiansfan on Oct 3, 2011 9:54 PM EDT reply actions

At the rate that Verlander is going (49 pitches through 4 IP), 7-8 isn’t out of the question, though I would still think if the Tigers could get 7 out of Verlander on his first career start on 3 days’ rest, they should be thrilled, since they would have Benoit and Valverde for the 8th and 9th (though both had their difficulties in Game 2, Benoit giving up a HR, while Valverde also gave up a run, I believe, and did have the tying run at the plate, I think).

He hasn’t handled Peralta any longer. RBI 2B.
Shocking, CC can’t pitch in the postseason.

What if...

by Danieldelamaiz on Oct 3, 2011 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I see Peralta finally got to him.

Yes, CC is not the “Big-Game” pitcher he’s cracked up to be – he can’t seem to handle the pressure.

That’s why he’s not beaten Beckett ever, why he lost to Price this year (and I’m not sure he’s beaten Price either), why he faltered in 2007 (and even his start against the Yankees that year was hardly stellar, especially as compared to Carmona’s start against the Yankees, and Carmona was a rookie in 2007), why he was only “okay” for the Yankees in 2009 (decent, solid performance, but hardly ace-like), and decent at best (really, not what you were expecting from your “ace,” even on 3 days’ rest, especially when Sabathia has pitched on 3 days’ rest before and Verlander never had before tonight).

Sabathia was bailed out by his offense, so it doesn’t look quite as damaging as it actually was, much like Sabathia was bailed out in Game 5 of the 2007 ALCS – his line looked okay, even solid, against Beckett, but there were a few nice defensive plays that saved Sabathia from giving up more runs in that game, including a nice catch by Sizemore (Boston was hitting the ball all over the place that game, whereas the Indians were hitting very little hard off of Beckett the whole night).

That’s why CC was fortunate to win his 2009 WS ring with the Yankees – if it comes down to him pitching a meaningful game in the postseason, his track record suggests he’ll falter more often than not. I’m sure Yankee fans aren’t too thrilled right now, since Game 3 was quite critical. The only saving grace is if somehow, Burnett can deliver the series back to NY, where Fister and Nova lock horns again.

One other observation: Jeter has really fallen – it’s one thing to make an out, but he had a couple of poor at-bats tonight in terms of plate discipline. In fact, the Yankee offense as a whole really did not make Verlander work, and I really didn’t think Verlander had great command tonight – he had several bouts of wildness, including when the Yankees came back to tie the game at 4 thanks to the “new Mr. Jeter,” Brett Gardner, who is probably one of the better Yankee clutch hitters now – has been doing some damage this entire series, much like Jeter used to.

Well, the only question is, will there be a repeat of 2006 and the Tigers take them out in 4, or do the Yankees get this thing back to NY for a Game 5?

And, in the other AL series, will a repeat of 2010 occur again regarding the Rangers and Rays, with the Rangers advancing again on the Rays’ home turf after defeating Price again (last year, Price lost Game 5; this year, Price loses a pivotal game 3)?

We shall see…

The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.

CC with another erratic big game performance. Verlander for the 8th and then Mr. Irrational Confidence Jose Valverde on for the 9th I assume.

The Tigers broadcasters only referred to Valverde as “Papa Grande”, which I believe translates to “big potato” in English.

by PBH on Oct 3, 2011 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe that is what Valverde is known as – “big potato” – I don’t remember the exact reason why.

HIs antics, though, make me think of him more like “big cheese,” “big troublemaker,” or “big nuisance.” (When will he blow his first save? This postseason or next season? And, what team will give him that blown save?)

by indiansfan on Oct 4, 2011 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions

One version has it that a Diamondbacks radio guy guy called him “Papa Grande” on air thinking it meant Big Daddy or a more Spanish version of Big Papi during his rookie year.

And apparently you’re correct that the name “Big Potato” is commonly used to refer to Valverde as many have pointed out the misintended, yet more fitting, moniker years ago while he was still back in Phoenix.

The nickmane traveled to Detroit and I guess they call him Papa Grande when he gets a save and Big Potato when he gets fried.

I hope he hates it when people call him Big Potato.

by PBH on Oct 4, 2011 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s funny. I always just assumed it was Papá.

by ahowie on Oct 4, 2011 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Valverde was fortunate not to blow it (like he’s been fortunate several times this year) – 7 strikes and 12 balls in 19 pitches?!

He’s lucky the 2011 Derek Jeter was at the plate and not the Derek Jeter from say, 2001, or even 2005-2007 – it probably wouldn’t have been a strikeout, and Papa Grande may have had “Headache Grande” and “Blown Save Grande” instead.

Agreed about the “stupid Tiger win” – whichever team wins here, I want the Rangers or Rays to beat them in the ALCS. Hopefully, it will happen. :-)

Verlander was rather dominant for most of his outing. I’m pulling for Detroit in this series and then whoever comes out of the Rays/Rangers series for the AL pennant. I don’t like the Phillies or the Cards so I don’t care who wins that series, as long as Zona/Milwaukee come out of the NL.

Have you watched any of the 11 games they beat us? He may have a bit of an ego issue.

by johnf34 on Oct 4, 2011 8:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t have a problem when players react with emotion in baseball. I know it’s considered poor form inside the game, but I think that’s part of why the casual fan has trouble getting into baseball. We all know there’s emotion under there, but casual fans are used to the emotive fist pumps of the NBA and the juvenile end-zone antics of football. Outside of the walk-off or clincher dogpile, baseball tends to show too much restraint in my opinion. I’m not suggesting choreographed dances or rampant trashtalking though. I just don’t see a problem with emotion spilling out more often.

However, every time I’ve watched Valverde get a save and freak out, I want to punch him in the neck.

by PBH on Oct 4, 2011 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Added bonus: once you start working on the choreography, those violent urges just melt away.

by YoDaddyWags on Oct 4, 2011 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

It is baseball’s restraint that makes the occasional, justifiable outbursts that much more dramatic. That was the heart of Dellucci’s famous quote, “It’s May baseball.” You don’t dance like you won the Super Bowl after every single touchdown, and the fact that NFL players do are to that sport’s detriment. They look ridiculous and self-aggrandizing — to just about everyone — not “passionate.”

I guess it just doesn’t bother me that much.
