Alex Rodriguez strikes out 3 times, makes final out, as Tigers eliminate Yankees from ALDS, 3-2
Gotta love the New York headlines.
That the Yankees were even in the game at the end was a minor miracle. Starter Ivan Nova left with an arm injury after the second inning after giving up two first inning home runs. New York would use six relief pitchers, including Game 3 starter C.C. Sabathia, and those six would allow just one run. That run which proved to be the ALDS-winning run, came on LGFT Victor Martinez's two-out single in the fifth inning, and came off Victor's former teammate Sabathia.
The Yankees would mount their biggest threat in the seventh inning, loading the bases in with one out, but Joaquin Benoit would get out of the inning with allowing just one run to score. Derek Jeter just missed hitting a two-run homer in the eighth, but his fly ball, a normal out in most parks, was caught on the warning track. So now the ALCS is set, with Texas and Detroit facing off. The Indians played both clubs in September, and they lost all nine games against the Tigers and Rangers. It should be an excellent series.
White Sox tab popular ex-3B Robin Ventura to replace Ozzie - Chicago Sun-Times
Thus ends the possibility of Sandy Alomar heading to Chicago. Ventura hasn't had any on-field managerial or even coaching experience, and his only front experience was as an assistant in the White Sox scouting department. To say this hire was out of the blue would be an understatement.
Sandy Alomar Jr. happy to be Cleveland Indians bench coach; White Sox hire Robin Ventura | cleveland.com
Some interesting information here, starting with Sandy Alomar. Hoynes asked Alomar via text message if he had been contacted by the White Sox:
"No, sir, I never received a call from the White Sox," said Alomar in a text message. "I was going to take my name out of consideration, anyway. I just want to keep moving and taking the next step in my coaching career.
Which means that Alomar will be the Indians' bench coach next season.
Hoynes also noted that the Indians were looking for a first base coach with a couple specific abilities:
Acta is looking for a first base coach who can teach outfield play and baserunning.

ARod looked completely lost at the plate – absolutely LaPorta-esque. I got the sense that the Tigers pitching staff felt relief when ARod stepped up to bat.
Robin Ventura??? And here I was worried that the White Sox would get an experienced guy who would make the most of the veteran talent on the team.

I’m not sure which would make Indians fans rejoice more: Kenny Lofton as the new first base coach or Rick Manning as the new first base coach.
Mike Sarbaugh’s playing career was primarily as a corner infielder, FWIW.

Bah, I personally have no interest in either of those guys as coaches. Hell, why not go with Joe Charbonneau while you’re at it?
Because opening beer bottles with one’s eye socket was not included in the job description.

Master plan to rid us of Manning:
1) move him from the booth to be first base coach, 2) midway through spring training have Acta begin publicly commenting that the team’s baserunning has been “disappointing thus far,” 3) fire Manning from first base job near end of spring training, 4) do not re-offer him annoucing job, since the team will have already hired a parrot that can say “you have to score the runner from third with less than two outs” upon command, thus eliminating the need for Manning in the booth.

Would fans really rejoice for Manning? Maybe Miguel Dilone (/sarc) or Brett Butler (/just thinking out loud), but I sense Manning’s time has passed (as a coach) and has found his niche in the broadcast booth. Unless,,, you are saying the fans will be happy when he is leaves the booth.
You make an interesting point about Sarbaugh – the criterion mentioned sorta eliminates him from consideration, no?

I would not mind seeing Manning replaced.

Now hopefully the National League Yankees (Phils) get eliminated in the first round so I can be happy for whatever team wins the whole thing.

Victor… The true shame of Boston’s collapse is that they would be preparing to play Texas right now if they re-signed Victor last off-season.

To do what? Gonzalez at first (huge numbers) and Ortiz at DH. (bloated untradeable contract) He’s no longer healthy enough for the grind as a catcher.
Unless Vic is a pitcher, he doesn’t fix what ails them.

In grand scheme, I would keep proven performers (Victor and Beltre) who still have tread on the tires over unproven (Gonzalez, Salty, and Crawford).

Wow, that was a really difficult play considering the circumstances.

Betancourt’s? Yes. The post-out flying through the air was pretty great, too.

so when will MLB.com have his post-game on-field interview streaming?
should I wait around long?
You are reading my signature.
He gave no on-field interview. Neither did Fielder. They tried to grab both, both ran into the clubhouse to party.

masterful job pulling out of it
"By being the manager and just playing whoever I want." - Acta on how he would choose to split playing time between Kearns and Buck.
And Carpenter is one out from making everyone forget it.

Howard vs. Carpenter for possibly the last out.

Ouch. I’m from Philly originally (in my pre-baseball-fan days), and my brothers, Dad, etc. are big fans, so the Phillies are my default NL team. But I particularly wanted them to win because of Cliff Lee, so this hurts, especially since a good performance from him in game 2 would have been all they needed.
So I guess I’m rooting for Martinez and Peralta now?

I’m indifferent at this point and I don’t plan on watching any of the remaining games, but the Brewers have the lowest payroll of the remaining teams by at least $10 mil. That’s a small point in their favor. I like Bernie Brewer, I admire their fan support, and I know they’re about to lose Fielder.
Then again, the Brewers did trade us LaPorta, and I’m not the least bit sympathetic to the ever moody Grienke. If they lose, so be it.
Random question: you didn’t happen to go to Bowdoin for undergrad, did you? I know a Dawn from Philly and I have to figure the odds are better than 1/100.
it’s nice to see the all the ‘big bad’ teams eliminated (and the quality of these games has been incredible), but damn, i’m ready to be rooting FOR a team instead of AGAINST teams.
