Hoynes notes that the Indians have an interest in Jason Kubel, who is left-handed but will be come cheaper than Michael Cuddyer or Josh Willingham. I would think the Indians would use Kubel and Shelley Duncan together in left field.

That is not a great beard. The only beards in the last 5 years of any real worth are Blake’s and Motte’s.
Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.
Fair enough. For those interested, I’m 3 months into a 1 year, no trim beard. Let’s see if I make it.

I am very interested in seeing updates or at least the end result. And I love that you’re doing that. The world needs more quality beards.
What made you decide to go for this sweet goal?
His beard is weird and his ’stache is trash.

I’m rooting for Willi, but it’d be fun to have Droobz and Kubez.

Kubel vs lefties worries me a bit, especially since I don’t expect Duncan to have the same 2 game stretch that significantly boosts his numbers like last year. A Kubel/Duncan platoon will still likely give this team significantly worse offensive value than they need.
I get that they inflate the numbers a bit, but I still don’t see why we get to act like the best 2 games didn’t happen. That’s like saying “well, he’d be bad if he wasn’t good.” Of course!

I think part of the reason for the lukewarm response was that through 136 games, Shelley was OPSing 717; 4 games later, that was 800, but the Tribe, having just been swept again by the Tigers, were 9.5 games out and done. But you certainly have a good point; he OPSed 829 for the rest of the month, with 10 more XBH in 73 PA, in the most prolific and successful month of his career.
Right, he maintained increased production from that point on. Had he not, his numbers wouldn’t look how they do and you wouldn’t have to worry about the few awesome games.

Duncan likely carries high variability in his production levels due to the lack of consistent BB totals. His bat will carry him. And may I add, Matt LaPorta could end up being the exact same type of player next year himself.
I wouldn’t suggest to ignore those 2 games, but let’s accept them for what they were – 2 incredible games that boosted his numbers significantly due to his low PA totals. Outside of those 2 games, he posted a .734 OPS. It’s not fair to completely eliminate those games, but at the same time, let’s recognize what 2 fantastic games can do to a guy’s numbers when he has fewer than 250 plate appearances.
Big games count for good hitters so they count for average hitters, too. You don’t get to take away Albert Pujols’ best two games. Is he still good without them? Sure. But Shelley has the ability to put together those big games, like the 2 you are subtracting, and that in and of itself is not insignificant.

It doesn’t appear to have been discussed, but we appear to be on the verge of re-signing Grady. I think that’s great news. When he’s healthy, he’s one of the best players in baseball and can carry a team, IMO. The “when he’s healthy” is a big red flag, but an incentive-filled contract makes this signing a good one.
I would think the Indians would use Kubel and Shelley Duncan together in left field.
Is this because neither has enough range? Who goes to the left better so he won’t run over Grady/Brantley?
Four outfielders.
Hmmmm. this is an interesting idea.
