Sizemore re-signing imminent
Multiple media outlets — MLB.com, Sports Illustrated, WTAM — are now reporting (or at least tweeting) that the Indians will announce that they have signed Grady Sizemore to a new deal, either tonight or tomorrow.

So, what’s the over/under on number of games Sizemore plays in next year? I’m guessing 96.
Our best players wear suits.
I’ll take the over, but just barely. Set it at 105 and I’d really be torn.

I’m happy for Phil. I want this story to end well, not as a slightly more tragic Joe Charbeneau.

Very pleased right now. Any takers on a Grady 20 homers vs. Fausto 4.00 ERA bet?

Is the bet Fausto under 4? Because if that’s the case, I think Grady with 20 homers is more likely.

Definitely Grady 20 homers.

I still think the most likely outcome for next year is another injury and bad play for Sizemore….but I think this was a good move by Cleveland
What is second most likely… Great year, leave as FA?

Surprisingly, the second most likely outcome is Grady converts to rastafarianism and moves to a vinyard/commune in South Africa

I like the way you think.

I think it’s like stats. I don’t count Division, Championship or World Series games, but I will count the one game play off at the end of the season when he homers to give us a 1-0 win in Detroit to win the Division.

It’s official. 1-year deal, no option for 2013. Base salary of $5 million, $4 million in incentives don’t kick in until he reaches 450 PA.
Will earn $500,000 if is named Comeback POTY.
As do I. Of course people are already complaining about the $5 mil base. What did they think he’d take when other teams were probably offering him $5-$6? It was always going to be around $5 mil when they said a deal was close.
In a market where Rod Barajas and Juan Rivera are getting more than $4M and Jamey Carroll, Mark Ellis and Willie Bloomquist are getting multi-year deals…I’ll take Grady’s 1-year $5M without much complaint.
That much for Barajas? I wonder what Rod Beck could get in today’s market (as is).

Sizemore’s performance bonuses max out at fewer plate appearances than he had in any season from 2005-08.
This kind of seems like a cheap shot from Hoynes to drum up discontent. Of course it’s going to be lower. They aren’t going to make him have more PAs than he did in full seasons in order to earn his bonus.

I hate to defend Hoynsie, but is it possible he just provided it for context, so fans would know how many PAs are expected in a year?

That is a terrible quote. Sizemore led the league in plate appearances in 2007 (748), was second in the league in 2006 (751) and 2008 (745), and still topped 700 in 2005. A grand total of 9 guys had more plate appearances than Grady at any point during those 4 years and NO ONE had more.
Another way of thinking about this….if Sizemore maxes out his bonus it means he has stayed very healthy all season. It also means he has not only remained healthy, but been a guy you want to have in the lineup everyday from a performance stand point. It is hard to imagine both of those being correct and Sizemore not being worth at least 2 WAR, which is about the value of this deal, fully maxed out. The contract values Sizemore’s 2012 somewhere in between Josh Tomlin and Jack Hannahan.
