The Indians, looking for a right-handed bat to help balance their predominantly left-handed lineup, have had serious discussions with free-agent infielder Jose Lopez, a major-league source told FOXSports.com.
Jon Morosi. There's a full write-up through the link, which includes the fact that Lopez's OPS was 611 over the past two seasons.
Sigh.

Thought experiment: Laporta is another team’s DFA. Is he an upgrade at 1B?
Still waiting on a trade to get us a starting OF.
Are we seriously handcuffed because of the Sizemore signing? LGT twitter feed says Willingham averaging 7 mil/year for 3 years. With Hafner off the books next year, the only question is this year. ?
He’s not a good outfielder and he’s never played first base. The bat fits, but if they dont see him as an outfielder, where’s he play? You might say DH in 2013 and 2014, but 2012 has to fit too. And I never thought they’d go three years on him anyway. I said 2 years and $16M is my max comfort level, and I’m glad they haven’t committed to him beyond that.
Be that as it may, is he so horrendous in the OF that it doesn’t make up for the offensive difference between him and Carrera/Pie?
If this is the type of player they’re going after they really have to be looking at Manny.

So call me crazy fellas and any ladies in the audience, but signing Jose Lopez doesn’t really mean they no longer are searching for an upgrade at 1B or LF. It means that the 25th guy on the roster may be Jose Lopez utility infielder instead of Jack Hannahan 3B/1B.
…….or perhaps Chisenhall traded! and Jack Hannahan starting 3B for your 2012 Cleveland Indians!, with Jose Lopez off the bench.
I’m gonna one-up you on crazy and say let’s not add a RH-bat free agent right now.
The Tribe’s 2012 success hinges on health and health alone. If they’re playing .500 ball or above in June on the offensive backs of Droobs, Choo, Grady, Kipnis, Chiz and—heaven forbid—Hafner, add that bat. But right now, they shouldn’t be looking to add a Dellucci or Michaels type contract—especially if it’s just for one guy.
I’ll add to your crazy post … how about Jason Donald being a trade piece?

Antonetti was right. 50 guesses never gets me to Jose Lopez. 500 guesses doesn’t get me to Jose Lopez.

Do they realize that it is possible to purchase Louisville Slugger bats directly from Hillerich & Bradsby? You don’t actually have to go through a middle man like Lopez. I’m sure his bats are very nice and all (they haven’t made hard contact with many baseballs) but I think they should save some money by buying direct.

This is a fun Gammons article from 1989 on the predicted end of wooden bats, with various bat producers complaining about how hard it was (is?) to supply MLB with enough of them.

My instinct is it’s a minor league deal, if anything. Morosi just happened to hear the rumor and pass it on; I don’t actually think it’s indicative of a ‘key move’ for the Indians.
As FTF said above, maybe Minor League depth to make up for a Donald or Phelps move that could be in the works.
