The #Indians have acquired OF Aaron Cunningham from #Padres for minor league pitcher Cory Burns, says BB source.

If you had given me 50 guesses, I would never have come up with this.

I’m on to you, Antonetti…

On the surface, I don’t like it. For those of you who want us to make more moves based on scouting, this one is for you.

The guy has put up pretty good numbers in the minors, but for whatever its worth he’s somewhat struggled in the two most pitcher friendly parks in the majors (Petco/Oakland). I guess it can’t hurt to see what he’ll do and all we gave up was some of our relief depth.

Fear the Fedora.

Minor league bullpen arm for a potential 25-man roster outfielder…what is not to like?

by APV on Dec 16, 2011 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

We have more BP depth than OF depth. Don’t read anything into it beyond that – I can see us being forced to use Cunningham next year, not so with Burns.

by mcrose on Dec 16, 2011 4:18 PM EST reply actions

He’s out of options I think, so that would mean the Indians are committing to carrying him on the 25-man roster.

by Ryan on Dec 16, 2011 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

If so, that’s a wee bit depressing.

by mcrose on Dec 16, 2011 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

There’s a comment on the Padres blog that he is out of options.

I guess we’ll see if Juan Diaz is #1 on the DFA list.

by westbrook on Dec 16, 2011 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

Just by looking at his history, I find it hard to believe that he’d have another option. He played in the majors and the minors in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. And I don’t think he was outrighted at any time.

by Ryan on Dec 16, 2011 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

He definitely used up options in 2009, 2010 and 2011, and I see no reason to think he’s a fourth-option guy — and no reason to think the A’s would dump him if he were.

Got a kick out of this.

The nicest thing I can say right now is that he has played in 2 extreme pitchers’ parks.

Obligatory post about how he will regress upwards from last year’s .183 BABIP

by AllenSmith on Dec 16, 2011 4:35 PM EST reply actions

I think it’s a sensible trade. As was pointed out, we have very little OF depth and an abundance of it in the pen. Burns put up good numbers in the minors, but his stuff isn’t that great (should fit Petco well though) and Cunningham despite his MLB struggles has hit very well in minors. The fact that he’s out of options hurts a bit, but he seems like an okay fielder and I’m more comfortable with him as our 4th outfielder than our other internal options.

Burns is a poor man’s Eddie Mujica.

by gte619n on Dec 17, 2011 10:12 AM EST up reply actions

I almost made this point in the larger write-up in the context of “losses that don’t matter”, but then I learned that Mujica was actually pretty OK last year. Not that we miss him, but I would’ve felt disingenuous.

WRONG -INGHAM, DOLUN!!!

Buy low sell high. Burns does not have mlb reliever stuff. Trade the crazy canuck to Toronto!!! Although Diaz seems like a utility inf at best. Why is he on the 40?

Trying to decide if “canuck” is a slur, and if not, why not?

The fatalist in me has Cory Burns now turning in to Doug F’ing Jones…

by stuart dean on Dec 17, 2011 8:19 AM EST reply actions

Think about it this way…Cory Burns was probably 4th in line at best waiting to join the Indians bullpen. And for him we got a guy who is likely to stick on our 25-man roster. That is a win.

by APV on Dec 17, 2011 8:26 AM EST up reply actions

Absolutely – my comment was directed at my own irrational fan-phobia

by stuart dean on Dec 17, 2011 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

Renowned Indians hater Keith Law even thinks we got the better of the deal, says Cunningham is a 4th OF

Our puzzle is now complete.
